You're the best Scotty.
The only other car shop I watch is Nicks Garage in Canada, he does just mechanics, Mopar expert mostly, he just finished a complete frame off restoration of a 69 Charger 500 for a Customer, he does a lot of muscle car work, engine and dyno work a ton. A fun show if you're into muscle cars.
You're way more "in tune" with all the auto markets.🇺🇸👍
Awesome video!!!!!
Love your vids Scotty. But you made a little goof at 4:15, the picture of the car you showed was a 1st generation Mitsubishi Eclipse and not a 300z. It's no biggie, they definitely look similar! And the rest of the content is on point, so I guess it's a moot point!
When you say a modern car, how new are we talking? Injectored? Vvt? Gdi?

Scotty has made me fearless of older cars (in fact I like them MUCH more now) as so many things require so little skill and yet have such a significant impact on longevity of a vehicle, if not ignored/forgotten. 💪
💪💪
The iridium plugs really do stand up over time. I just did my first plug change in my current car (2016 Mazda) and after 104K miles? The factory original iridium plugs were very close to the proper gap. And I went about 30K miles over the recommended service interval!
Coolant, on the other hand? I don’t care if they say it can last 7 years or 100K miles. I flush and fill the system every 2-3 years, like 40-50K miles. Coolant is dirt cheap. Engines, water pumps, and radiators cost real money.
That car can last a while if you keep taking care of it. Mines a 2015 at 192000 miles. Still original spark plugs
Up to you but I've had a dodge neon change coolant twice . Last 275k . 2003 civic haven't changed it once but I do check 195k . Oil I change every 10k synthetic when I had it tested the TBN was still strong . On the neon I changed the spark plugs every 30k . I didn't think it was smart because the threads get worn out after a while . Om the civic I only changed them twice
I had a buddy who had a Mitsubishi eclipse didn't change the oil the entire time he had it. Traded it in with 140,000 miles. I feel bad for whoever ended up with that car!
Wow.........wow. That sucks ......for whoever bought it.
Dam that’s kinda impressive but also cringe wow
It does show how good the mitsubishi engine is.
Always check the new parts against the old parts.
I have a 2001 Toyota Avalon and I have to say Scotty has taught me so much over the years not only about my vehicle but about automobiles in general.hope we all have many more years of Scotty Kilmer
Great video Scotty. As the owner of a 2003 Accord v-6 coupe with 256k and a 2010 Tundra with 184k, I can testify that routine maintenance is the key to longevity. Keep them coming!
That mileage is nothing on those vehicles.
Well, your cars are a Honda and a Toyota too. Try driving a Chrysler pos for 250k miles lol. Maintenance is important, but not everything 😉
07 Accord with 217k, 01 Pathfinder with 240k, and 01 F150 with around 220k. All in good running condition. The Accord still drives and looks brand new lol
@@AbcAbc-sp1od lol chrysler can make it past 200k easy. Just gotta know what you are looking for. My jeep has 220k already and it started pushing 22mpg

Hey Scotty! Bought a 2004 cream puff Trailblazer from a lady with the 4.2 in it. Well it was clean but needed a tune up. Had old AC plugs in it that were shot so I changed them out to NGK Iridium’s and what difference. Runs smoother with better acceleration as well!

Damn genius in some respects... I love this guy! Everything eventually breaks down... like the owner; life is better with good advice like this!
I put platinums on my 1984 Nissan 2.4 L pickup. I bought it used and I think it came with those. I put in a nickel stock choice, but noticed dead spots in the accerleration especially on hills and with freeway on -amp acceleration, especially the up-hill ramp which vanished again with the return of platinums to my truck.
Love Scotty...there are five things spark plugs, air filter, coolant but I always until 2000 changed the oil every 10k and fuel filter. He speaks my language. Back when cars were easy to fix yourself the good old days I'd scramble over the junkyard for parts. Cars are now far too over-designed and reliant on computers.
Agreed but apparently they are more reliable these days. Cars built today are expected to last longer than cars buily any other time. Certainly in the UK cars are taken off the roar due to rust/bodywork before they break mechanically.
The worst thing about modern cars is most are bought via finance deals and who is going to do proper maintenance on a car that they are leasing? I did 40,000 miles in my bmw without an oil change.
Car company’s claim we can go 7.5 to 10k miles on oil changes but search it on UA-cam. Even synthetic oil when left in that long is clogging up the oil passages in the variable valve timing engines.
@@michaelws6247 It also clogs up the turbo oil pipes, the feed and drain pipe causing lack of oil to the turbo shaft bearing, and eventually the turbo starts to break up and bits start getting in to the engine also the turbo shaft seal goes and oil then gets into the exhaust causing excessive blue smoke out of the exhaust .
@@michaelws6247 My Toyota only has 10,000 mile service intervals with synthetic oil. Should I be changing it more frequently then?
@@ilikelampshades6 most definitely, imo 10k is pushing it but I’d recommend 5k-10k is when you should be checking your oil. And use Mobil 1 oil filters or the oem
Always the best info
Awesome 👏 video
Good stuffy, Scotty. thx!
Great advice Scotty. 👍🏾
Great stuff.
Always good knowledgeable information 👍
Great advice, I changed the plugs on my Toyota.I thought they were horribly worn out.The tip was just a little spike looking thing. After buying new ones,I found out they look the same new.
Excellent teaching Dr Kilmer
When I worked at AZ , thus had the wrong oil filter for this same vehicle. The person who bought and installed said all the oil ran out of his motor and burned it up. The store had to end buying said purchaser another motor for said blunder.
Thank you Scotty
0:57 - props for including that rotary marvel Scotty
I switched to NGK Rutheniums in my Type R over the Iridiums after speaking to NGK. They've been phenomenal. They make a Ruthenium version that has a tip designed for Turbo charged DFI engines. They're the real deal.
Listen to Scotty and you will save money and your car will last a long time.
Scotty, one of your best videos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good evening Scotty! Harry from Tempe, AZ my Toyota Yaris runs fantastic! 🚗💨
Scotty is the best way to go
i have a GM 3800 supercharged engine in a 03 bonneville SSEi. i did a PCM tune and a pulley swap..... and a few other things. i run a colder plug to avoid detonation on an engine running more boost then stock.

I always go OEM, especially the oil filter

Still have the original spark plugs in my imported Mazda Axela 2010 from Japan. With 100k Km or 62.1k miles. It's Denso Iridium long life. Runs perfectly 😃
Ooh, The Heights! This is some old vintage Scotty!

Scotty. What exposed parts under my new Tacoma should i spray with fluid film or something to protect ity from the Nova Scotia winter? Control arms? etc?
I just love it when Scotty says 'Hey', inbetween 👍👍😀😀
😂😂🤣🤣🤣 the thumbnail at 5:38 . "That noise was really rattling"
Hi Scotty, very much enjoy your video's.
Not to disagree with you. I have installed E-3 diamond fire spark plugs in both my Honda (1.5l) and my Toyota 3 L V6
Have been very impressed with there performance. Better gas mileage and better performance. And I'm one of the biggest skeptics out there.
Your plugs were worn out for one thing... Those new ones you installed will only last 15000 miles.
Iridium and platinum plugs are typically more resistive which can result in weaker spark especially in older engines that don't run COP or waste spark ignition systems. This can result in misfires at higher revs and heavier throttle loads not to mention greater stress on your coil packs (particularly OEM) which could lead to premature coil failure. Check misfire counts with a OBDI/OBDII scan tool if supported, either way, you'll find out the hard way with pre OBDI vehicles.
Upgrade the coil and plug wires 👍🏽
Had a mate with a RGV 2 stroke bike swapped out to hotter iridium plugs cos hey it was supposed to make it fo faster - well after it melted a hole in the top of the pistion it didn't go very fast at all.
Informative
I do remember a Chrysler Valiant in the 1960's which used 'Champion' spark plugs (N‐14Y), and their maintenance schedule was (after 4,000 miles, or 3 months (oil change)) to clean them, then the next oil (and oil filter change), replace. Then came the 'copper core' types, but platinum was a long way off, because of not only the price, but using leaded fuel 'dissolved' the platinum electrode... So when unleaded fuel came into use, platinum was the premium material for a long lasting plug...
Good stuff
Hey Scotty, did you hear about the new Bronco’s , catastrophic engine failure in 42 vehicles so far, yikes go figure. Heard it on the news.
Or the new Bronco with only *20* miles on it, with a burned out clutch? It may be a heavy left foot there, but still....only 20 miles & needs a clutch?? 🤷
@@ScottMeister
The new Broncos have a stick shift option?
@@Winterstick549 The 2022 Bronco "Sasquatch" has a 7 speed manual.
I always change my coolant every 5 years or 60,000 miles regardless of what type it is.
I prefer to have a clean system. I don’t like leaving things too long or to chance.
I prefer to do more maintenance than less as this will make the car last longer.
In my shop I always advise every 5 years or 60,000 miles Regardless. I’m not the type of mechanic that likes set & forget. I prefer to check everything every 6mths or so.
I’m very fussy
Same here I have a Kia Forte for a daily the trannys are life trannys so they say meaning they don’t recommend to change the fluid and no dipstick so I said not me so I had them replace the tranny fluid at 30k miles and going to do it again at 50-60k miles because not all the old stuff comes out with a drain and fill. I don’t play around either I change everything ahead of time oil I use full synthetic every 4 to 5k even though dealer says I can go 7k I do the opposite of what they say.
I have a Ford Edge with the 3.5 v6. It has 114k on it and runs great, I dread changing the plugs on this thing. Like you said, the front three plugs are out in the open and the back three are hidden under the intake manifold. My mechanic wants $370 to change the plugs.
I'm not sure I'm ready to attempt this myself yet..
Good job man blessings guestion sir I have a 2008 impala3.5 vs6 when I start it has a adelay when starting like delay drig start what same to be the problem
I put iridium in my Tacoma a couple of years ago 👍
Long lost subscriber I’m back much love from tri state area
The 3.2L V-6 in Jeep Cherokees also hide the plugs under the intake manifold. Pain in the butt to change plugs.
Kind of reminds me of 327 engines in Chevies, “in the day”. You had to lower the engine to get at the plugs in the rear of the engine. Royal pain.
I once had a Chrysler New Yorker, I think it was a 1970 model. I wanted to put in new plugs. The back six plugs were easy to change. But I couldn't figure out how to change the front two plugs... there was no way I could reach them. I took the car into a mechanic and watched him change the front plugs. He had to raise the vehicle on a lift; when the front two wheels dropped down, he had to reach in through the wheel well to get to the plugs.
Scotty is the absolute best
417k on my 30 yr old F150. I don't believe I have ever changed the spark plugs.
Good grief
4.9?
It's a wear item. Change them.
Are you considering changing them? Might be neat to at least look at them at least, then put them back for old times sake.
LOL you can keep with up how long the original spark plugs been in there then you damn sure need to change them🤦🏾♂️😂
Hi scotty! Greetings from Houston!!!
hello!
Scotty, I bought Prestone coolant for my 2000 Toyota Camry. It for Asian vehicles. I haven't put it in yet. Is this okay to use in my 4 cylinder engine?
My '00 Crown Vic LX plugs are easy to replace, lots & lots of working room under the hood. My '97 Outback is not easy to change the plugs on, due to the fact that there is very little working room under the hood. After driving my Subi 18 + years though , I've got working on it, down pat. 😲😲😲
I have a 2016 mazda 3 i sport and it says to use FL22 coolant which is the green coolant, can i still use the hoat coolant or will it damage the engine?
Scotty, my 2007 Toyota FJ calls for toyota copper plugs. should I just stick with these? they are easy to get to, but say to change every 30k miles. thank you.
4:18 That is not a Nissan 300Z lol.. That's an Eclipse or Talon
scotty, i have to ask, how many cups of coffee do you have in a day? 😄 love your videos man, learning a lot!
My cars 18 years old has original spark plugs and original coolant still no issues I have changed brake fluid power steering fluid and the transmission and oil but the coolant is perfectly fine still and spark plugs all still firing fine.
Hi Scotty! I have an Opel/Vauxhall Zafira 1.7 diesel. I would like to change the coolant. In the manual says I have to use silicate free. I can not find the specified type. Is it okay to flush the engine and refill it with a HOAT coolant? Or will the silicates ruin something?
Scotty. I gotta ask. With Toyota going to turbo everything, have other companies with chain driven V8 engines such as Ford and Nissan become more reliable than like Toyotas with turbo v6s
How do you know when the radiator is going bad cuz I was changing my radiator and little Parts on it or trying to break off
Scotty I wonder if you can help me. I got an issue with my VW Golf 1,6 built in 2002. It only got 153000 KM run, but whenever I go into 4th or 5th gear and speed up to 70-80km/h, it begins to stink of gasoline like its getting shot out. Not inside, just outside. I've already replaced the Lambda probe, did all the spark plugs and its still there. It also sometimes stuttered when holding the gas at 70 km/h but that for now seems to be gone, no reason why whatsoever.
Super video and very topical for me at the moment. Going to price up a complete flush and fill with HOAT. Only trouble is not being a mechanic and a customer they don’t let you watch them change it, so how do you know it has been done correctly?
tell them what you want and go to trusted mechanics
@@thenman23 I would trust Scotty but he isn’t in the same country. When you go to the dealership you don’t even know who is working on your car-or any garage except a one man band. This is the problem. All you get is asked to sit in a waiting room or go away and return. Only believe what I see with my own eyes or see here with my own ears. That’s why I watch Scotty!
My 2013 Cadillac XTS has now got about a 140,000 mi on it and I was wondering if I should bother changing the spark plugs but every time I have a shop work on this car they screw something up! I took your advice and sprayed some throttle body cleaner into it and now it sounds like a muscle car for some reason. Another two or three payments and it'll be actually paid off after like 6 years and I'd like to see it keep running. I made the mistake of having somebody flush the transmission and it started slipping worse than before so I followed your advice on that too and put a quart of Lucas transmission sealer into it and it works fine now as long as I don't step on the gas hard. Any suggestions to keep it running on the road?
I just changed the iridium plugs on my Toyota Tacoma with 120,000 miles. The old ones still looked new.
My 2011 Scion tC the radiator apparently the plastic parts are starting to Decay and fall off so I had to buy all new part how do you know when to change all that stuff
What about the P-HOT coolant, the blue one used in some asian cars like Honda and Hyundai? Good for 7 years too?
I drive a v6..
And just experienced a p0305 (cylinder 5 misfire)
And the damn sparkplug was in the back like you said it was a pain
But it's the first time I actually did a sparkplug
And removing the plenum was really cool
Thank you sir!
I just had my spark plugs changed on my 4 cylinder vw Jetta 05, it was kicking in first gear and sometimes 2nd gear and I was told it only needed those. Well, get it back and it’s still kicking in first. What the heck?
My codes were misfires in 1 and 2 and also possible misfire and issue with the catalytic converter.
What could it be?
I have one of those dex cool systems in my 03 buick century, can I put a H.O.A.T. coolant in it?
I went to auto zone to get wiper blades . The counter person said I need this size according to the computer . I said it was incorrect but he said no so I allowed him to go through the motions to replace the blades and did not work . So he had to get the size I suggested . I remember having a Ford custom cab that had an oil bath and no air filter before klm was ever thought about . I thought of trying out platinum plugs on my 2006 kia Rio but decided to stick with the standard copper that's recommended for the vehicle .
Have you ever tried Evans performance coolant?
My 2004 5.3L avalanche with the original spark plugs have 362,000 miles and just now starting to have problems with them
I’ve changed the spark plugs on a 98 Camry and a 99 Lexus ES 300. I didn’t have to take any of the car apart to do it. But the car took some of my skin apart lol
Cars sometimes require a blood sacrafice when working on them..

Hey Scotty what do you think about Prestone Antifreeze+Coolant, they claim it can last for up to 10 years or 300,000 miles
I ordered 505 oil and fuel system treatments for my 2018 Mazda 3. I have been using premium PZSYNOW20 synthetic oil in my car for about 2 years. Using ATS 505 still work?
