Replying to myself because oof the idea of either getting to have kids or living the equivalent of years that yourself and your offspring would live combined is so fascinating. Never thought of that before but now I'm gonna have an existential crisis about that alternate/future reality, thanks lol

This is such an interesting discussion, not just the science bit, but the philosophy. The two go hand-in-hand.

Im with Luke on being fond of death. I think the main appeal of anti-aging is prolonging function and ability rather than extending the lifespan. Best case scenario I think is to be able to live to 80 without the aging symptoms. It'd be interesting to see how the treatment of older people changes as they no longer become "less valuable" to society as they age.

I read a book once (this was a while ago so apologies if i butcher the story) where the story was basically that people had figured out immortality as like a drug that you took at the age of like 21 or so. If you wanted to have children you had to opt out of taking the drug so that you would not be immortality and eventually your child would grow up and replace you essentially so the population wouldn't grow exponentially. Any children born to parents who didn't opt out if found out they would be taken away and put in "surplus homes" and referred to as surplus eg "surplus John" etc. And then all the "surpluses" were raised in these orphanages and were basically second class citizens. They had to work jobs like servants or maids and would never have the option of the immortality drug. It was a super interesting concept for a story. I can't remember the name of the book

My biggest gripe with the American Healthcare system (my only experience with healthcare) is that the focus of doctors is to prevent death. That takes priority over quality of life.
I don’t just mean with stuff like life support, I mean with everything.
Like giving birth: most hospitals have little to no regard for the traumatic experience of the person giving birth.Of course it’s important to preserve life, yet the fact that comfort is rarely considered is absurd. Women suffer greatly because for many doctors, comfort is not a key part of health.
I suppose a better example is with allowing natural death in old people, not allowing people to die peacefully at home. Instead many spend their final hours, or worse-years-in the hospital.it’s frankly disgusting the way we as a society treat old people.
I have epilepsy. At least two forms of dementia run on both sides of my family. If I have a seizure and my health was already on a clear decline, I’d much rather die than be forced to live in a hospital with potential brain damage for years or even days.
I know there are ‘do not revive’ option but the laws surrounding it can change at any time. Our freedoms are not guaranteed here in the US. That last bit is an objective fact not my opinion.
In the US, most states do not allow physician-assisted suicide.
I’m not afraid of death, I’m afraid of suffering.

23:40 dont forget that lobsters live under large amounts of water, a great radiation shield.
side note, we really dont have the resources for people to live 500 years.

Character/temperament seems established early on, & lasts into old age. My grandmother is 99, & unfortunately I have not seen her change(for the better) all the years I've known her. I often wonder why she doesn't question her good fortune at long life..& evolve, & become better. So time or age to me does not equal wisdom. Sci guys is a perfect example of young people who are deeply thinking, conscientious, brilliant people...& will likely continue on that path as they age, due to innate character. Many people in this world, we would probably not want to live forever. So our natural life spans may be best🌿

  • @fanellaforever

When you spoke about the wisdom of age, one would hope at least that is true...I think the problem with that is, as the generations go by, new ways of looking at things become accepted and the old and out-dated ideas tend to die out. If a large number of people who strongly believe, for example, that a woman's place should be in the home, or that being openly gay is wrong, then these ideas will be perpetuated for longer.

  • @amiscellaneoushuman3516

I suspect that the best way to extend human lifespans, and more specifically healthspans, would be to do it gradually over decades or centuries, as we've kinda already been doing, so our socio-economic and political systems have time to adjust

I know I’m commenting a lot and since this episode is over least 7 months, few people will see this and/or respond, but I love this discussion and want to be part of it. I’m gonna bring this up to my friend group for sure:)
I don’t want children. The closest I will ever get is potentially fostering, and only if I ever get to a good place financially and mentally. Like grandma age.
    I’d rather have horses.
My point is that I have no desire to live alongside future generations. I know this won’t happen, but if I live 200 years, by then I might have enough money and improved health so this might change but I’d need a partner and being a sex and romance-repulsed aroace I’m picky at best.
Overall I’m not afraid of death more than a reasonable amount. I don’t think about it often, even when people I know die.

The saddest thing is that many people boil them alive, even though they are as sentient as pets such as cats, dogs, and rabbits.
Please people, either kill then instantly or better yet, avoid eating them altogether.
No human needs to eat lobster in order to survive

So heres a question with evolution being the ability for a species to adapt to its environment over time and generations typically is it possible for said leviathan lobster to evolve in its own generation being that its biologically immortal and already creates new tissue faster than tissue dies? If we give the lobster low dose of chemo or xrays during its long life could those cells adapt in its lifetime causing evolution if it was to be assisted and prolonged for a hundred or so years and kept from disease and such ? Ik it sounds dumb af and more of a joke than sincere but im still a little sincere would evolution still require mating and passing on of genes from parents who have genes the other does not have and needing for those new pairings of genes to exhibit or show potential adaptations or could it without doing so ig are those cells that it recreates for forever the exact same as the first batch or do they change enough that over a long enough period of time it could be significant and cause evolution in its life time

Also Any religious person making fun of this is a massive hypocrite.
At least the immortal lobster can scientifically be real.
I’m not calling you out since I’m 99% sure you share this view to some extent, like the idea that stuff like hearing voices or claiming to is OK as long as it’s god’s voice. I have more respect for the lobster people than for Christians in the US who are using their religion to take away my rightswhich is actively occurring here in May 2022.
