Honestly I wish after forgiving Karen, Mindy wouldn't tolerate her in her life. That little girl was really tormented by that wicked racist. I can't believe her father didn't try to pay attention to what his daughter has been saying, at least he should have found other means to get the truth! The way how that dad chooses to die is to prevent his own daughter from coming. Everything about this was set for failure for the daughter to come visit her father's grave. So that dad did die without getting a single visit form his own daughter all because he decided to trust his new wife and his new wife would make sure his daughter does not pay any visit. I need you to help me find Mindy. I have to make amends with her. Candy is seen facing Karen. Candy: I was the one who told Mindy about dad's death. How he wanted to reconcile with her beforehand. You didn't want her there. Karen: But, Candy.... Candy: I will never forgive you for what you did. Candy leaves and she is seen crying in front of Mindy. Candy: I'm sorry for what my mom put you through. She had a personal grudge against you because she was reminded of Amari, your mom. I begged dad to stop mom from harming you, but he wouldn't listen. So, I had to go to your aunt for help. Mindy: Bailey.
Candy: Yes, your aunt, Bailey. She was my flute instructor. My mom had a personal grudge against your mom. You reminded her that past. Mindy: You knew what was going on. Why didn't you tell me? Candy: I couldn't because my mom threatened to send me away to boarding school if I tried to help you. It didn't stop me from trying in secret. I was the reason that you were safe with Miss Bailey. You deserve better than this. Mindy saw how much Candy went out of her way to help keep her safe. She wanted Darryl to reconcile with Mindy before he passed away. Karen was too selfish to understand that. Candy acted like a real family member to Mindy and hated her for what she did.
To me, I wouldn't forgive either of the parents. Dad became one-sided til the last moment, and Karen was the reason for driving her away and keeping dad from looking for her.
At the end of the day, Karen ended up feeling miserable. After all, she was obsessed to keep her stepdaughter so that she can control her. So when Karen's stepdaughter leaves, Karen is already feeling lonely but refusing to admit it. As soon as Karen's stepdaughter walks out of the house, Karen is blaming her stepdaughter for leaving all because she cannot live without her stepdaughter. The way she blames is she ended up pretending to be happy but is miserable. If she cannot put up with her stepdaughter, it should not be her business. Any woman who were to marry a single father would of focus her attention on the husband. Not try to keep the kids in the house for control. Besides, funeral is a sad event. Not quite worst excluding a family member from funerals. Karen is in a position where she is feeling lonely and refusing to admit it. Due to her ego, she drove her stepdaughter away but is refusing to admit it as her fault. As soon as she is saved by her stepdaughter, Karen decided to change.
I still can't believe that Mindy's father would choose to side with his awful second wife Karen over his own daughter like that while letting her get away of treating Mindy like a servant. If this father have a brain then he should have follow his own instinct to know somethings is wrong and talk to his daughter alone in order to find out the truth then he would have realise that Karen is a racist toward Mindy all along.
Unfortunatly it's too common thing. "Cutting out" from paintful past may sounds good, but not when it include abandoning child from previous marriage for favoring new wife and children.

When my friend wouldn’t immediately accept her and conform to what she wanted, Lady Tremaine turned against her and drove her out. Now my friend has no contact with wicked stepmother and very little with her father. It’s sad and so unnecessary.
