But what I'm questioning is why Rarity picked AJ. Unless she secretly knows that this is going to happen and planned to give her a friendship lesson all along, it's a questionable decision.
obviously Rarity couldnt be able to see into the future and what Applejack would say if she became judge. Rarity hadnt seen it coming either. She chose Applejack because she presumed Applejack would help the fashion designers improve by being honest, but Rarity didnt know that Applejack would take it too far. I, myself would have chosen Applejack too because of her honesty. It isnt entirely Rarity's fault. She went with her gut.

well Applejack did start getting pushy with her opinion. Strawberry started off with a simple "don't like them" and got more nasty as Applejack insisted that apples were better. Guessing Strawberry is also a bit of a strawberry farmer as well which means Applejack was also insulting her livelihood which I think earns some nasty retorts.
Heather Kramer considering she's eating strawberries and has strawberry bushes in front of her house ya she coud be a farmer or just love strawberrys so much.
It's called being a bossass. Strawberry just stood there took it, and remained calm, and kept giving her opinion. She didn't even need to defend herself because she knows how stubborn AJ is.
AJ Never gave a reason as to WHY Apples are better, all she said was *" They're crunchy, they're sweet, they're delicious."* Yeah, but so are most fruits on the planet minus the crunch.
Strawberry gave an actual reason as to why she believes apples are worse *"Oh, I'm sorry... that you actually bite into those tasteless, mealyworm-filled things. Ohhh."* She used the word "Tasteless" and "Mealyworm" which is 2 descriptions/reasons in 1 sentence. From this we understand that Strawberry has distaste for crunchy fruit as she finds them tasteless.
But the word "mealyworm" is very specific instead of "worm" like the usual sense, because a mealworm is the larva of a meal beetle which _(if it survives the stomach)_ eats its way out of its predator. Meaning she's had a traumatic experience with eating an apple because she probably _(once in her past)_ accidentally ate a bad apple that contained a mealworm. And because Ponies in this universe are herbivores, Strawberry's stomach acids probably didn't kill it, thus leading to her needing a medical procedure to have it killed & removed because it was eating her from the inside-out, all because she ate one bad apple.
The calm look on Strawberry's face as AJ's arguing just sums up the point. Thus allowing Strawberry to win the argument. Leaving AJ roasted. Strawbery Sunrise is such a great Bossass, she don't take shit from nobody.
