    IMPORTANT NOTE (for people who care about these things) These MiniDiscs are BURNED rather than Pressed. The facilities for pressing pre-recorded MiniDiscs no longer exist. Therefore these MiniDiscs are recorded on standard recordable blanks in real-time. This makes no difference to the listener experience - but it’s been pointed out that while it was implied, I didn’t specifically mention it in this unscripted off the cuff improvised quickly assembled extra video ...so I’m mentioning it here...in the video description text box that no one has read since 1978

    I worked as a sound engineer on a cruise ship just a few years ago. MiniDiscs were still the gold standard for travelling performers. It was an easy way to guarantee the format would work as not every ship in the fleet was using computer playback, and the format wasn't as fragile as a CD being handled by hundreds of people over the years. It's definitely a great format and still has a purpose today! I bet those same ships and performers are still using it.

    OK, you guys! Just WOW! Thank you for the support! I've been away up north these last few days and got home tonight... to over 160+ orders in my webshop!!! I'm all out of the the MiniDisc and Retro Grooves Vol. 1 already, and just have to re-order more asap! Who would think that MiniDisc was this popular in 2019? ^_^
    I've spent the better part of two hours sorting and printing orders, labels and making what I can of packing all 160+ orders. Unfortunately I have to wait until my postage stamp machine gets access to the values I've purchased (it's an old and ridiculously rigid system which takes a few days to apply.. business people designing it :P). I'm gonna need a few days to manage packing and stamping every order, but they will go out by this weekend.
    I've also sent a re-order to BandCDs and will most likely also order - if not all, so at least a few of my other albums on MiniDisc too, as it seems to be such a high demand for the format. Hopefully they can deliver it asap. All the backorders will be full-filled, just hang tight. :)
    Again thank you very much! :D

      They did okay in some markets and poorly in others like the USA. In Australia, they were in popular demand for a while until the advent of the Apple iPods, mp3's etc. in the early 2000's. What kept it from gaining more popularity was the 'checking in and out process' of digital music recordings and the poor support by Sony of their own SonicStage software. Ironically as Sony were infecting user's PCs with their notorious rootkit embedded in the pre-recorded CDs, they were marketing CD and DVD burners and discs for the purpose of of making your own recordings. Did Sony's various divisions ever talk to each other and did they ever understand what DRM (Digital Rights Management) was about? In the early 1990's in Japan you could purchase a CD and would be offered by the store employee a blank cassette tape of the approximate time length of the CD recording so that you could make your own copy. I don't know if that practice continued after Japan became a signatory to the Berne Convention.

    • @GODAXEN
      @GODAXEN 5 років тому +17

      It was SONY fault, they never had a clear route/plan for it plus it's adversion to license it to 3rd parties at first. Also MD data arrived late and it was incompatible at disc level not a logical level making it irrelevant and too expensive, Hi-MD also was to late and poorly marketed and somewhat limited. The DRM implementation and software available didn't help as most of the time made the things difficult.
      SONY made a grave mistake making it to not support HD audio in later iterations. Actually I think that if MD suported HD audio and it was well implemented it had the possibility to have much more spread today than SACD, DVD-A or BD-A.

    As a comedy club sound engineer in the early 2000s I used to use MD exclusively for cues and intro tracks... It was far more reliable than cd at the time and much more precise to cue. Also you can quickly edit tracks on the fly and create loops. Plus you can name the tracks which helped when you're trying to quickly find a cue for a live performance... The comedians made sure you knew about it if you messed the cue up! I think it's a great format...!

    • @JeremyHeiden
      @JeremyHeiden 5 років тому +6

      It's never really gone if you never forget about it. I bet there will always be people like us who will keep tinkering with the format. It will always be fascinating to someone. What I don't understand is when people say things like "the failed format" or "the commercial flop" and there about. This thing was made for like 25 years, and they are still making the media. Blank media for beta video tapes was being made until just recently. I kinda think failure seems to be in the eye of the beholder these days. Like when they pull a TV show I love because it only has 63,000,000 viewers... lol. If they didn't hear about it, or they didn't own it, it had to be a failure. Just something interesting to think about.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 5 років тому

      Insanely expensive?!? No it wasn't. I got my first MD gear back around 1996ish and I paid around CHF500 (about US$300 at the time) for a combo of a MD deck and portable player from Sony. By then it was only a bit more expensive than quality tape gear. (And the discs cost the same as a quality tape did, but are far more durable.)

    • @RobR386
      @RobR386 3 роки тому

      As a child of the 90s, yes it was expensive from my point of view, cassettes suited my recording needs right up until recordable CDs became a thing, so MD for me was a non starter until now where I've picked up a couple of Sony NetMD recorders, got them working and a few discs, mostly to explore what I missed back in the day, it's a very good format.

I listen to KRCL, Salt Lake City; KUNM, Albuquerque; KTDT, Tucson; WWSP, our local college station in Stevens Point, Wisconsin; WSUM, Madison; KDSU, Fargo, ND; CJUM aka UMFM, Univ. of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada & even Rock FM 95.2 in Moscow, Russia! The Russians are a bit less alternative & more 'classic rock' but still have a good variety. They ain't heard of Little Feat, the Hellecasters or possibly Phish, unfortunately for them, tho I bet cooler Russians have. They love American, Canadian & British rock, tho & throw on some old King Crimson or some newer alternative stuff now & then.

      MiniDisc has the same frequency range like a CD 20Hz - 20kHz. So no difference there. When it comes to the quality there is a difference between the actual quality and the quality that you hear. The actual quality is not better then the one from the CD since Minidisc is still using a lossy compression format. So there is a certain amount of quality loss. But when it comes to the listening experience some people like the sound of the Minidisc better since it enhances different frequencies to compensate the loss from the compression and this results in a fuller richer sound. When it comes to Hi-MD it's a different story since it is possible to record in lossless PCM quality and as far as i know the quality is exactly the same as the one from the CD.

    That's a really nice object in itself - I love that the design on the MD was Tampo printed on to the disc outer. And it sounds crystal clear, too. I love Minidisc as a format - it was so easy to muck about with, putting fades on the last tracks, etc. A system that didn't really get enough love in it's lifetime. Thanks for sharing!

    Re; The TASCAM MD-CD1MK111 Mini-Disc Recorder/Player. Hi Matt from Australia. This unit brought back memories. I was involved in multi-cultural/ethnic radio broadcasting for about 10 years. We used to fit these units into our on-air, pre-production and training studios. They replaced our old reel-to-reel tape recorders and were fantastic for quickly editing interviews and putting together programmes and music playlists. I am now retired and all my old training notes and manuals for this equipment are in commercial storage. If I ever get a chance to locate them, I will scan and scan them into pdf files and send them to you.. The Tascams were designed for professional radio standards and were quite robust and reliable, although could be daunting to use for the novice. The most interesting thing about these machines was they they emulated the "old school" manual 'cut 'n splice' editing of audio tape recordings. This made the task of sound editing considerably faster than ever before and the transition to this technology was quiet fast and efficient. Whilst you could edit on the small portable min-disc players, these units enabled you to do it far more quickly and accurately. We also used to produce Community group and public health & safely announcements for 55 language groups and distribute via satellite around the country for other radio networks and remote communities to use. This type of editing and production is a task now done on the modern computer using Pro-tools software etc. I have been watching your channel for about 2 years now and am frequently surfing the waves of nostalgia that wash over me as you dig out old 8-track tape decks, carts, mini-discs, and hi-fi equipment (mine is also in storage in mint condition). Anyway Matt, keep up the good work, and yes, I have no problems with your accent, terminology or phrases. (Router vs rooter and tubes/toobs, vs. valves gives me a laugh as you explain it to our North American 'cousins'). Down under in the antipodes we still use British English for our vocabulary , spelling and pronunciations, albeit with an Aussie accent.

    You can still buy the Tascam MD-CD1MKIII new in the UK (March 2019), but it's over £700. One of it's main uses is as a dubbing deck for copying CD to MD which it can do at 4x speed. It does have some quirks and bugs though like adding a 1s gap between MD tracks. I do sound for a local AmDram group and have recently returned to MD for its reliability, titling and short track support, although it's more convenient these days to assemble the music/effects using PC tools, write a CD then copy to MD. I have a MKI of the Tascam unit that I use for this (rescued and repaired from that internet auction site).

    That tape hiss brings back memories, but there is something I noticed having a direct side by side comparrison - I had never heard MiniDisc, but one of the complaints I remember hearing is that a lot of the dynamics were missing. Now I get it is also going through UA-cam compression, but the MiniDisc, other than the the tape hiss not being there, seemed to be "brighter", almost like the bass and treble on the two machines were set differently - the MiniDisc sounded like bass was turned completely off and the treble was cranked up. This gave the impression of the music sounding "brighter" and "fuller", but when compared to the tape, you could really tell how much dynamic range was missing.
    I know Audio on MiniDisc is compressed, but I was not expecting that dramatic of a difference considering they were using ATRAC 4.5. I am not sure if it is the MiniDisc itself, or if the duplication house did some adjustments, or if it was the playback equipment, but yeah, there was certainly an audible difference (even without the tape hiss).

    • @gmshadowtraders

      Could it possibly be because of the 'more natural' analogue to digital conversion? I suspect the minidisc copy was made going straight through SPDIF or coaxial digital connectors, so without any analogue anywhere in the chain. The tape instead went the analogue route, being tape of course. Maybe if the minidisc was also recorded the analogue way (because you can also do that on Sony MD hardware decks), then Sony's 24-bit A to D converters would be superior to the tape version?

After 10 years of shows, only 2 discs ever wore out. If it wasn't for the audio compression issues and size limitations, I'd still be using them.

    Techmoan! You're costing me a small fortune! It's my first pre-recorded minidisc purchase too. I now have over 100 minidiscs even though I rarely listen to them (1990s was not a good decade for pop) and as you said streaming is more convenient nowadays.
    What facinates me is the design of the minidisc brands and models, meaning the minidiscs themselves, not the players. I occasionally go to eBay and look for sealed minidiscs that I don't yet have. I might even start a tech UA-cam channel including sealed minidisc 'unboxing', and burning discs using my Windows XP laptop.

    I loved mini-disc back in the late 90’s. In fact, I’d say it’s the media format I’ve had the most fun with over the years. I’m pretty sure I’ve still got a Sony deck and a couple of their Walkmans in storage somewhere and this video has made me want to go and dig them out. Thanks!!

    Outstanding as always! A couple of questions. I was wondering if these were like the pre-recorded ones from Columbia, where the sliding door only exposed one side and if it was a one sided disc? Or are these redesigned blank minidiscs? Also, because of your many years of tinkering, would you know of a reason my MZ-1 only plays pre-recorded minidiscs, but won't play tracks that were previously recorded on blank minidiscs?

      Regarding your player only playing pre-recorded discs, I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but I was watching a video where someone was fixing a CD player that wouldn't play CDs. He said that the laser degrades over time as was not powerful enough to read the disk. If I remember correctly, there was a potentiometer screw near the laser that controlled the power of the laser. He turned the screw to increase the power to the laser and that solved the problem. He said, though, that if you turn it up too much it would blow the laser. I have no idea whether minidisc players have a potentiometer for the laser.
      Pre-recorded discs were pressed, and recordable are burned. Perhaps your laser is not powerful enough to read the burned ones but it's ok to read pressed ones.
      I hate to suggest what might be obvious, but have you cleaned the laser? Remember, lasers can blind you, so make sure the unit has no battery inserted and is not connected to the power before doing any servicing.

      The album is a recordable MD which has been printed with inkjet lacquer.
      As for your MZ-1: The reflected (optical) signal from a recordable MD is much weaker than from a pressed MD. Most likely, the laser has degraded and is not outputting enough light. But as Colin said, it's so easy to blow up the laser by adjusting it too high. (I'm sure you can find the service manual for it if you really want. But it's probably not trivial to adjust.) With an MZ-1, which is comparatively rare, I'd probably retire it to being a museum piece, and use a different MD player for actual use.

    That's the great thing about digital formats, provided that the basics are working you will get 'perfect' sound, as opposed to the numerous annoying degradations caused by ageing analogue gear.

But.... as of now, I can finally put a face to the voice lol. Anyways, keep up the great, and well educated, content!

      Ah you’re right, it was totally mini DVD. Because I remember using the miniDVD-RW that came with it to transfer files when USB sticks were still expensive.

    Wow! There was a cool little popping noise in the music (by which I mean it was an intentional part of the music) which I didn't even notice on the cassette; the noise obscured it. That minidisc sounds pretty bada**! I much prefer the sound of the MiniDisc over the tape. 👍

    I don't understand how they release cassette with such low dynamic range and poor highs these days. I have machines at home that are away from those nak and i manage to achieve way better recording than this.

    Got the same Sony MZ-R3 when I was in Japan in 1994. Love that little device. Such a nice, elegantly designed machine. Carried it everywhere with me until MP3s took over. Still upstairs in my bedroom.

    I still use Minidisc today, I have a Pioneer full-size MD player and replaced my Cassette deck with it many years ago. I still kept the cassette deck (pioneer CT656) as I just couldn't bring myself to sell it. I bought a stock of blank MD's and have yet to use the all up. Great to see that MD is sort of alive again.

      c6030315 Again, if you investigate, you’ll find that to be including worldwide shipping. And everything including packaging, designing the entire thing, mastering and not to mention the thousand of hours put into composing and recording all the songs... I don’t know... earning about 50 cents per song in profit per cassette is too much?

      c6030315 It's roughly the traditional price of a new CD. But it was more expensive to manufacture due to low number of disks.

      Check some cassette releases on Bandcamp - these are way overpriced in comparison. And yes, I'm factoring in shipping.

    • @bren106

      It's roughly the same price as you will pay to buy direct from many mainstream artist's website for their commercial products. Recently announced pre-orders of new albums from two major recording bands I follow have both been $25 + shipping. So if this is shipping included it is substantially better value.
      You never know, but if you ask him he may be prepared to stop eating, and go around naked, so you can have it cheaper.

    i still have my player sitting gathering dust downstairs somewhere. the sound from that mini disc cd combo player is absolutely stunning. it is so rich and full. i also have probably 40 or so mini discs i recorded onto, all kinds of music i put on at the time. seeing this made me want to get it out again.

    Awesome!
    I'd love to see a careful look inside those broadcast MD machines, to see how they modified the mechanisms to handle the rigors of professional use.
