This is cool, but my fan theory is a little different. We've seen Rainbow's father in flash backs but never her mother, suggesting her mother was noticeably absent. Rainbow is undeniably more masculine than feminine suggesting more influence from stallions than mares (though yes, she easily could have just chosen to be a tom boy because that's how her interests developed). Finally, probably the most convincing piece of evidence of all. She was close friends with AJ before the show began. Think about it, they knew each other's interests, AJ knew what Rainbow was thinking in the tree house and anticipated her actions during the sun celebration, AJ could even pull on Rainbow's tail without any repercussions, not even a scolding or angry look. In ticket master, AJ and RD know exactly what the other does and just how to get the other's goat. They sound a whole lot closer than say, RD and Pinkie Pie, who Rainbow actively avoided for a while. This could all be calked up to common interests, but what if there's also a shared loss? What if they didn't meet at a sporting event (which I'm not sure what spots they could visit TOGETHER anyway, considering Cloudsdale has its own sports) or a party, but in a grave yard both mares putting flowers by the graves of their lost loved ones? Yep, I think the evidence is there. Firefly might not have made it past pregnancy or maybe passed away when Rainbow was very young. AJ and RD may have connected while mourning, not while celebrating.
