The tempo is WHATEVER DAVID GARIBALDI SAYS IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Esatto, cazzo! Exactly! Even greenwinch will follow!
HAHAHAHAHAHA
The Garibaldi is never late and is never early. The "one" is exactly where it the Garibaldi has chosen it to be.
Funkiest band, with the funkiest drummer on the planet. No discussion.
The best part of this is, as amazing as David's drumming is, it really doesn't make sense till you hear it al l together with the band, and then it's a thousand times better. So amazing. Love this band! RIP Rocco
TOP the tightest band on the planet !! Here in the Bay area we call it East Bay Grease !!
Tom Elizalde that’s what up
Right hand is perfectly fluent on the hat awesome relaxing groove
I was there that night... it sounded great out front ! ! !
Yeah a full mix of this would really end all the silly back-and-forth behind the scenes in this message board. And from the people who were there at least hearing that it sounded great, what’s your feedback on how it felt did it feel like it was rushing or slowing down and speeding up too much?
To all you who are dissing DG for “rushing”, you do realize that what you’re hearing from the band here is the front of the house PA system. You are NOT hearing the monitor feed. You’re hearing Dave from behind in real time and not the several millisecond delay bouncing off the back wall of the house.
You should hear the old people at our church try to clap, and then add in the front of house delay on stage. It’s awful ahahaha
nah he's rushing.
spin it any way you want, still a great drummer, but he's all over the place here. No big deal, it happens to the best, for whatever reason, age, hearing, etc. Even dennis chambers loses things here and there on video, no one is 100% perfect all the time, still both of them are among the top drummers
For all you guys dissing Dave because of stage sound displacement acoustics I assure you if you were out front it would be tight. The band wouldn't be able to function with the rhythm section out of sync. The comment about him getting 'old' is just fucking stupid
I think it's more that in the chorus the tempo picks up. Nothing to do with the sync.
For all DG's skills and talent as a drummer, he is even more an amazing man. Blessed to have his friendship.
Check out how Herman Matthews plays this - it’s pushing in the same spots. It sounds great, why would anyone give a shit if it’s pushing and pulling? He plays it how it’s meant to be played, he wrote the thing after all. David Garibaldi is one of the all-time greats.
I cry when I see him play. He is wonderful!
When I was young I found Tower of power ...I said: amazing band!
And David Garibaldi and Rocco Prestia (rip) I can only say: totally awesome!
garibaldi rushing discussion: as a former sound engineer I think I am able to explain the phenomenon. The sound is captured by the set of microphones for the drum. Vocals, Guitar and all the other instruments are captured by this same set . However the source of these musicians is the Front Of House. Hence the delay created, with the impression of a rushing drummer. If he really was rushing, others would have suffered. And they lock in for so many years. A better option to avoid the phenomenon would have been to mix in directly, the other channels and subgroups. However that would be in conflict with the remaining delay by the front of hous. And for it is a drummer video, they pumped up the drums for educational reason. I hope I attributed to the discussion in respect for the tremendous musicianship...
Thanks for clarifying,
but he always tends to rush in all of his concerts even at the studio
I'm so glad that you were here & explaining that to us ! Thanks ! It all makes sense !
Chrioni Sta Ana, that’s total bullshit.
I'm just an amateur drummer, but i think he's rushing because the rest of the band is rushing , and he "must" do the same, he must "follow"; that's the main reason , according to my own experience. Awesome drummer (and band), anyway.
Get off DG’s case!!When most people his age struggle to play 9 holes of golf in retirement, this guy is touring the world as a seventy odd year old driving a band twice the size of some. All you supremely talented time keepers, who love to find fault.Show some respect and better still ask more of yourself than of DG.He will always be the high priest of funk drumming in my opinion.
I definitely agree. He is Mr. Syncopation, hands down.
Yessss. Funky keeping and nothing else. Master
And, as a 70 year old, I still practice karate every day, as I have for 43 years. You dipshits that think nothing existed before you came along are just that: dipshits. These guys are the innovators. Anybody can copy someone else. These guys invented the sound. Try creating something. All you can do is copy someone who came before.
David makes it appear so effortless. This is a tough one to play. Hands down the greatest groove master on the planet.
I learned this on bass back in around '75 not long after it came out I believe. Was a great study and really got me going in Rocco’s finger style bass, had a huge influence on me to this day. R.I.P you amazing man! We’re missing you and will for a long time 😥 Also our drummer couldn’t hear the bass drum because we didn’t have very good speakers in our band house, I put my ear right up to the speaker to hear any kick sound and got that
One (e an) A ‘Charleston' thing, really tied it all together too.
Saw them last week. Solid as a rock.
This guy is my hero.
Ive played bass in funk bands with horns and suprising this is what it sounds like on the back line. Unless you have really good monitors sometimes bass and drum is all you can hear as the horns and vocals are out front. Hopefully you can hear the guitar well, especially if you have a player that likes to improvise, change chords or segue to other songs...Fun as heck though getting pulled along like a tornado. You really have to know the song!
Cold
There is Tower of Power and then there is Tower with David Garibaldi !!!!
He is a really close friend to to one of the Countries Finest Guitarists whose played with Tower. I have been told he is a stellar person. Peace
I was there and this was awesome ! ! !
TOP's backbone. He and Rocco are the best rhythm section.
RIP Rocco.
One of the few who plays with no click and someone is debating about him?
What a pure drummers you are, guys to get discussion on Dave G. Master of syncofunk and ghost notes
Dynamite!! My honey in heaven would love this. DG was his hero. Nice to see Rocco on bass. Thanks for posting. Happy New Year.
RIP Rocco.
Watching the master laying it down tight what is hip 💯🎼🥁😊
Three minute mark is pure musician heaven!
His sounds and feels good. Speeds up toward the end. I’ve heard countless bands do this. Music and tempo naturally ebbs and flows unless you play to a click. Throw funky drummer on a grid and watch that break down drop 20 BPM. much love DG. No one here could do it better.
That groove ugh!!!
Thank you for uploading these videos. It is a pleasure to watch the "Jam Master" work! His contributions the art of drumming are felt but rarely talked about anymore. My son and I are both drummers and big fans of his work.
Smooth chops... love it!
Many, many years ago, probably about 35 years, I sent David a letter asking for drum lessons. I knew I'd either not hear back at all or get declined. But I'd have the letter which would be cool. Anyway, he did indeed decline but it was a very nice, encouraging letter which I honestly didn't think I'd get. Ha. I had it for years but eventually lost it.
I was one of his students back in '92 if my memory serves me properly. I learned what I went to him and will always be grateful and remember.. The only thing I regret was not having he teach me the drum part for On the Serious Side, so I did it on my own and am still trying to get it to the point where I "own" the groove. That one, at least for me, is taking a long time.. It's a tough one to do since the snare part is constantly changing where it lands, but once you get the hang of it and just learn to concentrate on it, it becomes more natural, but that is definitely not an easy thing to do where it "swings" and is relaxed where you can play it without THINKING.
The only complaint that I have is that for funk drumming, I play traditional grip as that's what FEELS best for me. his kit is setup for matched grip, plus he sits REALLY low (probably with the throne set at the lowest setting) and the snare drum is not at the proper height and angle for me to play traditional grip. I would have to completely move my body and arms to a VERY uncomfortable, contorted and unnatural position. He wouldn't allow anyone to change his setup, which I understand, but it's just I have to play in very unnatural way on his kit. it was just frustrating to say the least.
But I certainly got a lot out of the few lessons that I had, not to mention it was over an hour away from where I live and not an easy thing to do when I was attending college full time, plus having enough time to practice each week..
One thing I must say is that at the time, he wasn't playing with ToP, and I remember mentioning to him that he should get back together with the band because HE IS ToP and it isn't the same without him. I'm glad he did it.. I'm not trying to take full credit, because I'm sure many others were telling him the same thing…. But I'm glad he took my advice and that at least he could hear from his fans.. :-)
The master!
What a difference it makes to hear the bass drum on this track (it’s lowered on the recording)
Beautiful Ride!
Absolute BEST!!!
David your the best
3:14 I love that, the guy has to come and check out what the hell is going on with the drums. It's like the boss coming to see, who is the weakest link.
I'm sure everyone was praising Garibaldi that night. With constant errors like that, i sure as shit would have a talk with the man, especially if i'd pay for his services.
Wow, that guy walking up to the drums, he is definitely checking out why the drums are all over the place.
Yeah man, it may be time for some new blood in the band. It was probably time for that already, when this was filmed.
His playing in this song, is totally unacceptable. As the employer, i would deduct this song from the salary, this is subpar. If Garibaldi sees this video of himself, he would not deny it either. His tempo is all over the room, it sounds like Lars Ulrich is playing the song.
David groove skills is amazing! happy to study with him and he sure inspires me to play drums every day.
Que diferencial no swing, essa caixa. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 David
You should watch on x0.75 time to really enjoy this bliss
YES!
The man..
David and Rocco were a force to reckon with. Miss having Rocco around. The audio focusing in on David is so kool. Seeing Brent's interaction with David is like he is in awe of what he is witnessing.
Is Brent the guy at 3:14? Yeah man, he is in awe, but not in a good way. Garibaldi is messing up the groove big time. Change the drummer already, sheesh.
Cool, Dave is doing a paradiddle groove with some double time and punches. Nice to know.
❤ nasty groove!
Who cares if he's rushing! I've seen them a dozen times and the whole band rushes sometimes. But it still sounds effing great!! And it works for them.
A lot of very good musicians have listen to really good Cuban music, if you really commit yourself to listening to the many styles over the decades you’ll notice the Cubans bands have a way of for one thing constantly speeding up during the piece but also playing breaks that sound almost stretched out in time in a magical kind of fashion. They even have a name for it “effecto” in certain bands. Well Garibaldi is very well exposed to those concepts and might well be taking the concept to their own unique level of musicality.
@@TiqueO6 People don’t understand that a great drummer doesn’t have to have a perfect internal metronome
@@ianh.7331Johannes Brahms (a master of syncopation and counter-rhythms concepts) hated metronome markings and said 'those machines aren't human!' while he held out on putting any MM markings to allow the orchestra or players to make those interpretations.
This makes sense for more than just the acoustics of the hall, it's allowing the music to be human and breathe and get 'excited' as it's happening.
Heart bits here what is hip!
Great file man!
the drummer good at his craft
Imagine that you are a saxophonist or trumpeter and you are on a huge stage, the auditorium has a terrible acoustic and you have a natural delay of the drums of more than a quarter, in this situation the master DG together with Rocco will have to lead the beat in syncopations , funk and this "ride" that you mention. Only Masters like them control the beat with this level of mastery, every day their high musical level surprises me even more.
He is playing good is the waybthe spund is arranged!
I am seeing where Akira Jimbo got some of his drumming influence from. Wow.
For those who are saying DG is all over the place..... Listen to Rocco. I think it's Rocco who is rushing and DG is just trying to keep up and keep it together.
He plays it’s so smooth, it’s ridiculous. Seems like he wrote the part or something 😊
Unfortunately you are correct. Every time he goes for the ride-Cymbal
People have a point about the front of house echo delay, but he does speed up every time he goes for the ride
Go David you can do it.
Somebody tell me what is the model of that ride cymbal?
If we could only hear the full mix of the band the whole debate could get cured one way or the other. The tempo changes could really be exciting and effective if the whole band is unified with the well might be. (I can’t even hear a monitor nearby him but maybe it just didn’t get picked up). A lot of very good musicians have listen to really good Cuban music, if you really commit yourself to listening to the many styles over the decades you’ll notice the Cubans bands have a way of for one thing constantly speeding up during the peace but also playing breaks that sound almost stretched out in time in a magical kind of fashion. They even have a name for it “effecto” in certain bands. Well Garibaldi is very well exposed to those concepts and might well be taking the concept to their own unique level of musicality.
Soul Power!! XD
This video is educational. There is so much to learn.
What time speed??
If you're a drummer and you've never studied David Garibaldi then you need to stop and listen to his work
👍💜💜💜💜🥁🎵🎤🎶💕💞
His signature shuffle beat bringing the funk
What is Hip? Paradiddles!
Not Dave's fault. No hi hat in the mix and it seems the mics that represented here are gated...all the ghosts notes are cut out. It sounds like I get with my bass drum mic when I record. I gate it so I kill some of the transient bleed from the snare and overheads... and hi hats... this is totally misrepresenting what Dave is doing, which is astoundingly good. Find another UA-cam video. This one sucks.
Fuq what they saying DG is the funkiest of them all now and ever... I study his chop placement loose hands
The way he slows and speeds up tempos. Dang
One of the big problems with this is the editing. One example, right after 1:34, the band is in sync before and after a bad cut, which makes it feel like Garibaldi is rushing. But how could the whole band still be synced up after he rushed?
Nope, there is a camera angle edit the but definitely no audio edit. The tempo is all over the place throughout the performance. Garibaldi is a great player but this was clearly an off night for him. I'm very surprised at drummerzone for uploading this in the first place.
Compared to the speed of light, the speed of electrons within a copper wire circuit and the speed of sound, sound is painfully slow! Now you're hearing the drums directly via electrons traveling through mics to a copper wire (extremely fast) and then, you're hearing Rocco's bass, not via a microphone or DI at the speed of electrons, but the very late reflective booming of the front of house subwoofers. The travel time of the bass guitar returning to the drum mics is musically speaking, quite long, which tells your brain that the drummer is rushing.
I did not expect this : ua-cam.com/video/eaAhNwJCnuo/v-deo.html
Yep, it does not get any better, i'm afraid. I remember liking Garibaldi's style back in the day, but i guess we all get old eventually.
Regarding tempo actually the entire band is responsible for the tempo ... Drummer's job is to help keep the form together
Well said. It's so difficult at times when a few band members are playing too quickly to keep the tempo in check. Especially if the guitars for example, are drowning you out with volume.
He’s not using in ear monitors and it looks like they are outside. The acoustics aren’t good. It’s easy to get off beat by accidentally following the bands echo.
Sponsored by Dramamine?
What in the living hell the drummer rushes like CRAZY in the choruses. I wouldn’t even say he’s PUSHING or PULLING… it’s like a 5bpm difference at different parts!!! My god I’d be so pissed if a drummer played like this on a gig. Like dude, ever hear of a metronome?
Is there something messed up with the conversion of this video or something??? There has to be some error in the video or audio.
Paradiddlediddle, paradiddlediddle,paradiddlediddle,paradiddlediddie,....and my douchebag nephew thinks learning basic rudiments is over-rated
So many Folks don't get the power of understanding Rudiments!
He needs to realize that rudiments are just that...rudiments, which is the fundamentals of all drumming...even that shit they call music nowadays with auto tune douche nugget artists...
Karl Hungus 😂
baaaa that killed me dude! hahaha
No disrespect but Dennis Chambers playing this is worlds apart. DC all the way.
Locked..
Might I suggest some decaf next time
Haha reminds me of how I play it. Lol
David must've been in a hurry leading that fast!!
The grumblers don't know nothing about the code or foundation.
They don't play the Percussion instrument.
To all those who criticize DG: Unless you can play this song live with no flaws, shut up! You are not worthy to carry his sticks!
I can’t hear Rocco and it makes me sad.
Is it me, or is his timing all over the place in this performance?
No,you are right,he is pushing and pulling a lot. I can only imagine how hard the band is trying to compensate for the lack of steady beat. This was a big letdown for me.
Im going thru the video the 2nd time,Garibaldis' time is atrocious,to be honest. He is getting old.
Yes I was thinking the same thing. We all fuck up. We're only human. He's still better than me so I won't criticize him.
It's because the sound of the rest of the band is delayed. Makes it seem like he's pushing.
It's because of the reflection of sound waves off of where they're playing. If you listen carefully it's never perfect. Between human error and reflection it sounds like he's off.
There is some video trickery afoot.
Am I wrong or is he rushing?????://
You're not wrong
You're correct,David is all over the place with his tempo. I have no technical explanation for this. Simply,he is just getting old and his brain is changing as he gets older. To be fair, this will happen to us all.
That's what I thought
I would be willing to bet it was a monitoring issue. No In-ears here and if it doesn’t feel right it’s tough to lock in
I think Rocco was rushing and DG was trying to keep up.
Funkiest white man of all time
Is it me or is David rushing at times. Somebody let me know.
marlinfish128, you’re hearing the band through the PA system and bouncing off the back wall. So there’s a delay effect. This is not the monitor feed that DG is hearing.
hehe I almost laugh when his right hand shifted to playing eight notes instead of the funky broken 16th notes groove he was playing most of the time, well he is still human after all or just getting old...I'm sure during his younger years he can play 16tns all night long hehe.
alencore I actually asked him if he played sixteenths with one hand on that song on the original and he said “heck no”, that it was actually ghosted with his left hand.
@@paulpwinkler 💜💜💜💜🥁🎵🎤🎶💕💞
He Makes it look so effortless, I get my coat lol
@user guess you’ll be getting the call to do a better job in the chair then, can wait to see it.😀
RIP tempo
Lol
whats with his tempo? and he botches the transition at 2:45 and throws everyone off... good recovery from the band though
Hell yeah man, imagine how pissed off everyone is, trying to keep up with the drummer. It's like trying to thread a needle, while driving over potholes. This is subpar.
Hey guys chill on the man. He's old, admits to rushing, and this was at NAMM late at night so he was tired.
Paradiddle
Whether you idolize David Garibaldi or not, he is now 73 years old. Let that sink in first. Reality is that when people get older, their brains naturally deteriorate. In the case of a drummer, its going to be highlighted a lot more than would be the case with other jobs. Because the part of your brain that handles timing,it starts to get clogged as you get older and the synapses do not fire up like they used to.
Simple fact of life. Get over it. This is not personal, these are the facts of life. You get old, your body starts failing. Simple.
Très cacophonique quand même !!!
sounds rushed
Stank face mode engaged. God damn.
Forse ci sono problemi con il tempo.... ma dico forse😂😂😂
David u was rushing dear lol
def rushed
Timing is really bad
