This match is famous in Sweden because of the performance of Glenn Hysén, the swedish center back. He got a mark of 6 out of 5 for it in the swedish papers the next day!

Had Lineker been fully fit he'd have put that chance at 2.41 away in his sleep. But he was still suffering from the after effects of the hepatitis that screwed up the Euros for him. Still the best pure goalscorer I've ever seen in England, tho van Basten was a better striker all round

That piece of skill by Waddle the layoff at 1.52 was out of this world..England got a hard time for the Euro 88 performances by Butcher was injured, Lineker ill and Beardsley/Barnes off the pace following an intense league battle..

That passage of play and some others showed one of the main errors of Bobby Robson vis a vis Waddle and Barnes...he should have had them off the flanks, playing more narrower and compact better able to work interchange with the front man Lineker and Robson in midfield..

Just another point..England got to the semi of the 1990 world cup due to a strong defensive line, Platt's goalscoring, Gascogine good play and Lineker's opportunism but the reasosn they never caught fire up front?...Waddle and Barnes never turned it on..You see here what England were like when those two were synchronised...
