Yes, they were and are by proxy still Great. The most telling quote that inevitably tells us what happened to Metallica comes from James Hetfield himself, around the time alternative bands were starting to peak. Contrasting his style with the new alternative style he stated (about the lack of complexity in the genre) 'If I was writing my music like this from the beginning, we could have had a lot more albums!' J.H. coincidentally, that was the last time Metallica sounded like Metallica, afterwards he started creating music with a very different sound/style. d>_0b

Since that was a quote from the man himself, he acknowledged that the songs to come weren't going to be as complex as previous works, and THAT is what is missed! Its like comparing classical music with hip-hop There is still plenty of room for innovation in the genre! Art is never finished, only abandoned- L.Davinci d>_0b *we all change, as inevitable as true, but does that mean we forego complex compositions as the sacrifice? I would like to believe not, but thats not what has been observed...
