  • Tourists from around the world admire the 1300 monuments on the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania. However, time, nature and vandals are taking a toll. This documentary explores efforts to protect, repair and raise funds for the monuments. But more importantly, it showcases the people who know that the best way to preserve these "stone soldiers" is to make sure America knows the fascinating human stories behind them. From the WQED archives, 2008.

Maybe a stupid idea but you could let people adopt a monument. Over here in the Netherlands they did that to a the Americain world war 2 cemetery at Margraten. Every single grave and MIA are adopted by locals and volunteers who maintain the graves.

I'd adopt the one to the 1st Minnesota! A true landmark on the battlefield.

It is inconceivable to me that someone would damage one of these monuments. But others of the “my cause justifies any action” mindset do not share the same thought. Shame and prosecution on them. Thank you to those who work to preserve this dedicated, consecrated, hallowed ground.

Unfortunately idiots also come to Gettysburg. A guide told me someone went out to East Cavalry Field and tried to hook up an Artillery piece to his trailer hitch. The largest sculpture garden is here. One of few surviving Cycloramas in the world. Ms. Boardman gave a lecture on the painting at the NEW Visitor Center.
Really interesting stuff. It's worth a visit to Gettysburg.

It would be my honor to stand watch over the monuments if I lived near Gettysburg. But I will say this - They must be dong a good job because I have never seen anything out of whack every time I visit. This was a wonderful video and it would be so awesome if someone could do another and update us all on the same things being done nowadays. Alot has happened since 2008.

What an outstanding documentary -- one of the best I've ever watched. I love how much the home state of Pennsylvania -- brave, gallant, valorous and heroic Keystoners all -- is represented at this most hallowed of battlefields. Been there three times and am due for a fourth visit.

Back in 2009 I saw this on my local Erie PBS station and never forgot it. I've looked for it on DVD, and yesterday, on the 160th anniversary of the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg, I suddenly wondered if this might be on UA-cam. I watched it yesterday, and today,
on July 4th, when I should be thinking about the signing of the Declaration of independence, I watched it again. A wonderful documentary.

Hallowed ground many thanks and great respect for your efforts to protect our history ! The vandalism and the current attempts to destroy Civil War monuments is a sad commentary on the IGNORANCE of a few. Those who fought and died, North or South were true patriots WE get to live in the country they died for The most fortunate people in the world Think about, people die to come live here !

This is the first video of Gettysburg l've seen with a black tourist.
I know there weren't black soldiers at the Battle, but free blacks that lived in the route of the ANV hit the woods to hide out until their retreat.
And it stated that guy came all the way from Montgomery,Alabama.

What those brave men did for us. Anyone getting caught vandalizing those monuments should be forced to take a course on the civil war.
