    I just discovered this channel and its amazing, it makes me teary eyed. My nephew is half Japanese living in the USA and doesn't often get to see his Japanese grandma and grandpa, only talk on the phone (they don't have internet so they can't see him either). I often go to Japan for work, and if I am somewhat close to where they live I have been very lucky to go visit his grandparents so that I can bring them updated photos, video call him, and give them updates. They love my brother so much as he takes good care of their daughter (wife) and son, but I feel lucky to be able to bridge this gap and they show me the same amount of love. Whenever I go to their house grandma cooks me a feast of her favorite dishes and some of them she even says she hasn't had a reason to make it in years! The reason for this long comment is from all of these visits to them, I understand the importance of learning about their food, their stories, and their ways of life and sharing it with the younger generations. Japan is one of the only societies still around where the old culture is still very much alive, however with the most recent generations, that is finally starting to fade away. Many of my friends, and even my nephew dont understand the importance of keeping this beautiful and rich historic culture; its manors, its food, its daily style alive. When I explain to them how I am just a "mut" white american with not much culture, and how i really respect and appreciate Japans history and food they kind of open their eyes and have a moment of change, and realize they were taking what was "normal" for granted. One of my friends even quit his city job to live in the countryside and maintain a farm that was slowly dying due to the lack of young people.
    By making these videos you're helping to maintain and promote the beautiful culture that Japan offers, and on be half of someone who experiences my own "Japanese grandma" i appreciate this!

    Makes me remember my grandma...she spent all her good years,happily taking care of her kids,then grandkids ... As a young army wife's officer,she used to travel a lot too.. but in later years,when she has us grandkids and we would meet her year for summer holidays ,she would make us all our favourite treats and even make extra so that we can take back ... Women such as these beautiful ladies in the video are no more made...They are the true hustlers ,even when food was less,responsibilities were more and when life was just life in their times...They cherished everything that they had ,even if it was a just being in kitchen and cooking for family and friends

    What a remarkable woman! So full of spirit and yet gentle and kind. I hope her family doesn’t take her for granted and will learn to eat and prepare the traditional foods eventually. When she’s gone, they will regret not connecting more fully with their heritage. At least this video series captures these gracious ladies’ giving hearts.

    I thought this was beautiful. I love this line of videos. When my grandmother cooked, I spent the time watching her , and yapping about nonsense. She was so willing to listen. It never occurred to me then that she wouldn’t be around for me to ask how she did this or that, I took for granted I would always remember.

      I would change "pizza" with fast food or canned food, frozen food....Pizza doesnt have to be a travesty, it also can be a traditional dish that some grandmothers would make with love.

    • @1kinut800
      @1kinut800 6 років тому

      I know in my family, all of my siblings participate in in Osechi, we all made efforts to get home at least for New Years, and some of us learned how to cook our family's traditional dishes for that day. However, the next generation was raised more liberally, did not have to go to family gatherings but could go off with friends, and now that those kids are grown, many of them live too far away to come back for holidays. They have other families now too. The ones that live close enough do still come to Osechi because my mother, their grandmother, is now 93 and it means a lot to her to see her grand kids and great grandkids. But once she dies, I doubt the family will make the effort. As it is, both my sisters find cooking as these obasans have just too much work and they order osechi from their Japanese food stores instead since neither of them learned how to cook most of these foods. I have mixed feelings. We're losing those old world traditions but we're also blending with other cultures and races. Just as so many of the rich Japanese arts and crafts are disappearing as the older generations pass on, so are these types of traditions, and the youngsters are mixing all the cultures they are influenced by into their lives instead. I don't know if that's good or bad. I don't know if the youngsters will ever even miss things like osechi.

    • @jenm2251
      @jenm2251 5 років тому +1

      Actually one of the grandmas in this series admitted she was uninterested in learning her mother's pickling method. So even that generation didn't always get things passed. I guess she thought she knew or could figure it out but didn't. Now her mother is gone of course.

    As an American it would be such an honor to learn to cook traditional foods from these Grandmothers. I try to mimic my own Irish grandmother's cooking from scratch - like breads and other dishes. But, I really have started to love the time it takes to make something wonderful. I love a good bread recipe or pastry recipe that takes days to cook. Even pizza dough that takes a full 24 hours to cook a 10 minute pizza with sauce and herbs from my garden, and cheeses straight from a farm. The lengthy process of cooking from scratch is actually what makes foods taste so great. Do you ever invite outsiders to learn with you on your excursions?

      @@jenm2251 I kindly disagree, you can't have both.....you can have pizza anytime anywhere but when your mother in law makes these amazing and rare dishes, you sit and eat it and appreciate the love thats put into it. Due to the kids or daughter in law wanting pizza these delicious and healthy dishes are slowly being forgotten, and young people don't understand the value in the dish. Just my thought :D
