- This International Women’s Day, Sarvamangala Production is celebrating the global theme of Break the Bias with the premiere of this award winning documentary.
Haripriya, better known as Dr. Haripriya Namboodiri is a rarety in the world of the art form "Kathakali", a classical dance-theatre from Kerala (India). Breaching the traditions of Kathakali, centuries-old, strictly guarded male bastion, the petite performer has made a mark as a sthree vesham (female characters) specialist in a gamut of roles that include Lalita, Urvashi, Damayanti, Pootana etc. Traditionally the female roles in Kathakali were performed by male dancers as it was believed to be an art form made exclusively for male performers. Haripriya, who also holds her PhD in Kathakali was successful in transcending the strict discipline of Kathakali to gracefully infuse the emotive aspects and create a holistic experience for the audience, especially while dealing with female characters. The late bloomer, as she calls herself, made up for lost time by training with three successive gurus, from different schools. In her own words, in Kathakali being a woman actor is not at all a welcome idea. A female artist is tested at all levels before she is taken seriously. Haripriya, through her hard work, has challanged this norm of Kathakali and has made her male contemporaries question their conventional ideas about the performance. This film is an attempt to follow Haripriya's journey from an ordinary woman to a successful performer of a complex classical art form which was conventionally performed more by male-artists.

വിരഹതപ്തയുമായ ദമയന്തിയുടെ ഭാവങ്ങൾ ഹരിപ്രിയ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. പുരുഷന്മാർ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ദമയന്തിമാരെ മാത്രം കണ്ടു ശീലിച്ച എനിക്ക് അത് ഒരു പ്രത്യേക അനുഭവമായി തോന്നി. ദമയന്തിയുടെ നിർഭാഗ്യാനുഭവങ്ങളെ ഒരു നടിയ്ക്ക് എങ്ങനെ സ്ത്രൈണമായി ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാനും അവതരിപ്പിക്കാനും കഴിയും എന്നതിന്റെ പ്രത്യക്ഷ ഉദാഹരണമായി ഹരിപ്രിയയുടെ ദമയന്തി.

I have seen performance of Haripriya on stages. The comments in video given are absolutely right. A request, from my memory. I saw, when I was7 or 8 years, "Bhakthameera" once at Sreepadmanabhaswami Temple. Shri Mankulam Vishnu Namboodiri and Smt. Chavara Parukkuttiyamma played the lead roles. I do not remember more about that. I have a wish to see the play once at least in this life. Does anywhere, any artist play this? Arinjaal vannu kaanaan aagrahikkunnu.
