Yes! What a GREAT ride! It was broken down in the morning when we arrived and we were so bummed. Then it opened mid-day and we RAN to it! It was fabulous! Wish I could have ridden it all day! Our kids LOVED it too!
I've been building with balsa since I was a little kid, and I just have to tip my hat to the sheer amount of patience and talent it takes to build a model this big. Sure, it might not be that interesting to a young kid browsing UA-cam, but if you've ever made anything intricate out of balsa, then you know how hard it is to make a model like this!
this is why the internet is awesome. There is no real reason to build this besides the enjoyment of it, but its someone anyone wud wanna see run a few times.
Wow. That is really impressive. Your kids are are lucky to have you, and judging from your other videos it looks as if you are blessed with a wonderful family. Just when I am ready to lose my faith in mankind I see a video like this one and it is restored.
wow! i had a space warp back in the mid-80s, and this just beats the pants off of my set up! amazing! and now it is a "vintage" coaster! lol. best vid all week!
I'm mesmerised, even the sound, I LOVE the sound its making! WHY is this so beautiful? Scientists need to study WHY the human mind is so captivated by this, & yet some call it a useless work of art, but WHY why WHY?
Wow. Thank you! I don't know if you know, but I broke it back in the spring of 2015 taking out a turn to add another turn and I never finished it. I need to get back to it, but life is too busy. I'll post a video with the new turn someday when I complete the modification. Thanks for writing.
I like the sound.. It's like water falling : dull and repetitive. And when it stops you enjoy the silence even more. Well, thank you for your awesomeness ^^ super montagnes russes!
Great question! There is a brushless clock motor under the "ground" that turns the dow rod. The rod has 2 layers of simple weather stripping wrapped around it like screw threads. The marbles are essentially pushed up the hill while they lean against the right railing.
I love your idea! In fact, I rode a "water roller coaster" in Rockford, Illinois last summer and it was a BLAST! Archimedes "rolling" track design just might work for a water slide ride! :-D
I can't help but imagine this to be the soft, servile voice of a head waiter in some fine old restaurant, citing a menu of thrilling excursions the realm of human anatomy ...
I lost my patience with it several times and took a long break in the middle of it. The only goal was finishing it. Built it to put something nice on my shelf at work. Glad you like it.
That's really neat man!! love to see someone designing and making something like that - ignore the idiots - they should get a life. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! I only have 8 of these heavy steel ball-bearings. I suspect it could run a lot more, but the dowel rod (Archimedes Screw) tends to bend under more weight. When all 8 balls are on it, I can see it sagging. I'm not sure what a lot more would do. In fact, if it sagged enough, I suspect the balls could slip under the railing on which they are leaning and then they might get stuck. If I find more of these heavy marbles/balls, I'll try it out.
very cool. i second the idea of filming a point of view down the track. dunno how you'd do it, but if you can pull it off it'd be the coolest thing ever
Physics can be interesting when appled in ways like this.... I'd rather just spend 9 months on Rollercoaster Tycoon 2... which i do, but being able to do this is something you should be, and probably are proud of. Seriously though, you should get that game, if building something like this interests you, then you will NEVER put that game down. :-)
I've been asked this before and I think back in 1990 this cost about $30.00. Today, the price of the Balsa wood has gone up, but it wouldn't cost you more than $50.00 and probably not that much. For this type project, you need more patience and time than money. GOOD LUCK!! :-)
really nice made
Thank you! I plan on making some modifications to Archimedes in the not-too-distant future and hopefully I can get a new movie out. Thanks again!

Could you maby make a video on how you build that pick up system or perhaps a timelaps off the building?
you must be one VERY smart man to invent this.... and for it to last 21 years without any maintenance, is incredible
i see you there cat all lurking and judging sh*t

Wonderful job. The Archimedes screw is certainly a unique way to elevate the marbles...and like you said, "No maintenance." Excellent.
Thank you for sharing that with us. I am in awe of your craftsmanship.

best vid all week!
That's great! The most amazing part was the fact that you made it 18 years earlier and it still works perfectly.
This is one of the coolest things I ever seen someone make!!!
OMG you are so smart... and this coaster is a marvelous feat of creativity and an immense patience...
I'm mesmerised, even the sound, I LOVE the sound its making!
WHY is this so beautiful?
Scientists need to study WHY the human mind is so captivated by this, & yet some call it a useless work of art, but WHY why WHY?
ha this is so awesome! 9 months to make it and you stayed dedicated til it was finished, well done!
You my friend, are truly an enlightened man. I pay you my respects. Awesome marble run by the way, best one i've ever seen. One love ☮
strange indeed, how can someone dislike a fine piece of work like this...?
That shot of the gears was the most badass thing. All rollercoasters should have a view behind glass at the coaster and how it works. .
This.... I can't even describe how AMAZING this is!
What a class act!
Awesome coaster, too. I imagine the structure was pretty fiddly, especially in the middle and the over/underpasses.
this is soooooo cool! I bet your kids love it! At least your cats seems to enjoy it.
That is pretty amazing. The noise of those marbles running through that coaster is making me sleepy. Very relaxing. lol
This is insanely awesome, and its probably more insanely awesome in person. Man, you should make this your job.
Very impressive! One may say with pun intended.
You have reinvented losing your marbles! Job well done!
I hadn't watched this in years. Still amazing. Great job again, Mark.
Wow. Thank you! I don't know if you know, but I broke it back in the spring of 2015 taking out a turn to add another turn and I never finished it. I need to get back to it, but life is too busy. I'll post a video with the new turn someday when I complete the modification. Thanks for writing.

I'll be looking forward to seeing it when completed. All the best to you, your wife and the kiddos.
great! i could never build this myself. This is pure genius and workmanship.
Spectacular work and great craftsmanship.
I like the sound.. It's like water falling : dull and repetitive. And when it stops you enjoy the silence even more.
Well, thank you for your awesomeness ^^ super montagnes russes!
He didn't cheat with plastic or metal either, he made a real Archimedes-type screw out of WOOD. Truly incredible craftsmanship here!
Brilliant! This is an amazing piece of work..the detail, wow.
This is super cool. Like this would oddly probably entertain me all day.
Oh wow. Hand carved?!
That's insane!
Awesome job.
This is simply amazing. Love it. Nice job Mark.
dude - that is just bad ass. You're kids will remember this their whole lives. :)
i don't care what the teachers say. You win first prize at the school science fair
This is incredible
How some scrubs can dislike this kind of fine videos??
You have so much talent! Good for you man! I wish you and your family the best of luck!
Great question! There is a brushless clock motor under the "ground" that turns the dow rod. The rod has 2 layers of simple weather stripping wrapped around it like screw threads. The marbles are essentially pushed up the hill while they lean against the right railing.
this is the most amazing creation i have seen on youtube
That is so cool! Awesome Job on building it, it is so detailed and you are a true craftsman for sure! :)
You have a really calming voice as well as an amazing coaster!
You have some serious creative talent there
I was fascinated with marbles when I was young and always wanted to build something like this. Wow..
Great work! Congratulations! that is a big accomplishment! Very Well Played Sir!
I love your idea! In fact, I rode a "water roller coaster" in Rockford, Illinois last summer and it was a BLAST! Archimedes "rolling" track design just might work for a water slide ride! :-D
i'd take that as a compliment... you did such a epic thing...
that is amazing great job 18 years without mantinence thats amazing!
We love KNEX and those marble run toys at our house too! Keep those marbles happy! :D
Excellent, that is pure good
engineering at work!!!!!!
This world needs more people like you, mdscms.
Stunning, truely something to be proud of.
Man oh man -- I wish I were a ball-bearing again. It looks like more fun.than a wild mouse ride.
Thank you!!
a never ending rollercoaster. that is so freaking epic
I like the point of view on the track idea
It just seems cool
This is amazing I hope you carry on making these!
I can't help but imagine this to be the soft, servile voice of a head waiter in some fine old restaurant, citing a menu of thrilling excursions the realm of human anatomy ...
this is a great invention dude, nice job
wow that's pretty awesome, i hope to see a lot more stuff like this
So awesome, you should get paid REAL money for doing that! So amazingly amazing
I lost my patience with it several times and took a long break in the middle of it. The only goal was finishing it. Built it to put something nice on my shelf at work. Glad you like it.
A beautiful and elegant machine!
This is pretty cool! Great work
Sickest little Marble Coaster ever
Neat, what patience. Nice work, looks cool.
epic rollercoaster dude! nice job!
That is awesome! Great work on that!
Solid engineering - nice job
That's amazing man, you've got a gift.
I want to see this as a real roller coaster. It looks great!
you have the calmest voice i have ever heard... you should give instructions on how to dismantle a bomb
I personally like the way it sounds! It makes it more interesting! :)
You are very smart Mark!
Really amazing job! I love it.
Exelente trabajo.... la madera balsa es mi material preferido. Por el momento es mi trabajo pendiente. Saludos
Great! I'd like to see it when you are finished!
I think that is cool coaster, I wish I was that talented.
Those marbles must be having a great time.
So great. I love this! Good work it looks great!
This is so cool! Great job!
judging by the sound of your voice, this is a pretty relaxing hobby. XD
Really nice construction!
You sir, YOU have a talent.
still a bad ass video after all this time on youtube. she is a purrdy one. i could watch this for hours (just as i could any coaster).
you must be an architect or engineer... that is brilliant.
Wow, awesome. I can't imagine how much patience you needed to make this.
That's really neat man!!
love to see someone designing and making something like that - ignore the idiots - they should get a life. Keep up the good work.
This is a beautiful construction.
That is amazing should do a step by step series on how to make one of these. I want one!
The cat REALLY wants to get at those marbles!

I agree! I need more marbles and I need to build another one of these with my kids!
Physics can be interesting when appled in ways like this.... Seriously though, you should get that game, if building something like this interests you, then you will NEVER put that game down. :-)
HOLY CRAP that is awesome that must have took a whole lot of freakin effort.I would quit in the first hour.
I've been asked this before and I think back in 1990 this cost about $30.00. Today, the price of the Balsa wood has gone up, but it wouldn't cost you more than $50.00 and probably not that much. For this type project, you need more patience and time than money. GOOD LUCK!! :-)
i will never be as cool as this thing
you and jeremy lin make me proud!
I wish we had a acrylic marble with a mobile phone camera and gyroscope inside it, then we could take a ride on that awesome coaster.
thats awesome man, good work.
I wouldn't blame you! If it was the 90's, I would have nothing better to do than to build that.
