Just what I needed. I've just made a spring compressor which works. but I was looking for retainer collets. I needn't have bothered with the compressor tool. I'm playing with my tecumseh push mower. I've just found that the carb emulsion tube has fallen off and was wedged under the exhaust valve. Happy days. Thanks for the video. Very clear.
Your video and others have taught me sooo much! Every hint helps me! I’ve managed to get the flywheel off and the valves out thanks to all of y’all being so generous with your knowledge and experience. Next I’ll lap the valves, replace the PCV, head gasket and key, put it back together and hope for the best! I already put a new carb on it. But that didn’t do anything. I only had 37lbs of compression so I took it apart. Also, the key is damaged but I don’t know if it caused the no start. Ha! Learning as I go.
You do such a great job of explaiing everythig you do. I am just starting on re doing a Tecumseh H60. This series is helping me understand what is going on.. Thanks..
Thanks man! This video really helped. I had an intake valve on my snow blower not closing all the way. Gave 60lbs cold compression, 85 hot. I took the valve out and had 20 thousands ground off (nice to have friends with machine tools). Now I have 125lbs cold. Weather man says we'll by up to our donkeys in the fluffy white stuff by this time tomorrow.
Your video was a little long-winded as some noted, but all I had to do was jump around until I found the info that I needed (I'm a patient guy... I guess some people aren't and feel entitled to instantaneous information instead of learning something else along the way... ignore those fools). All I wanted to see was the spring+retainer shift and removal then re-installation of the valve and you showed that really well. Thanks, man. I owe you a beer.
Thanks for the video. I've got a Techumseh with a burned valve and yard work to do. Just tried the procedure on a junk motor that's going to donate an unburnt valve, was able to get the retainer off and on. Thanks again..
thanks for this help video it is easy when you see how it is done. i think i will make a wedge to slide on the case side and the us the driver on the other side and then have a free hand. well i used the large l end wrench in the l end wrench kit and it held the retainer up far enough for me to get the retainer off. real easy. thanks for that lesson.
i have the tecumseh lh318sa and the my brother says the engine slows down in snow. it did not have a loose head the decomp seems to be working by hand as i have it apart. the rings have top .020 center .024 oil .035 piston 3.09 dia bore 3.12 dia. the exhaust valve is a bit wobbly in the guide and i would like to change that as well but do not see a part for this. and i think this may be why it looses power. belts were good. so i want to grind and lap the valves but would like to get a new guide. thanks
How muchbof s pain is it to just open one of these engines up. I have to do this on mine as the muffler was glowing red so the exhaust valve is probably caked up with carbon. Im going to try some penetrating spray and a bit of fuel cleaner just to get by till I can open it. Hopefully it wont crap out on me till I can open it up
Great vid. thx. I set Briggs 12 hp flat head valve in: 3 mil, ex 6 mil. once put together, I have 25-30 psi compression, just about firing up. How to correct it without open the motor?
Can these valves be adjusted? I can not get the engine started. I put a new carb on it because the choke fell apart on the old carb and sucked the little screw that held the butterfly on the choke shaft, in the engine. I took off the head, Saw some marks on the head. The screw was in the muffler... But the valve looked OK. But I could easily turn them by hand... Took off the breather pull starter rope and it seams like allot of air blows out where the springs are... ?
@fred306801 i always hone the cylinder so the new Rings seat in right .. but if the rings are bad it should be smoking .. i might would try changing oil to a 10w30 or just a 30 and try i think the Lucas Heavy Duty oil is a 40 weight... do not use any synthetic oils... the part in the old drum brakes kinda like this is the "shoe retainer spring" it held the brake shoe back against the backing plate so they dont drag on the drum a little metal washer thing make a half turn and it releases
Thanks again for the video !! I remember working on a old 70s model car and the Drum breaks had something very simular. You made that look easy, good job. You said about the only other thing causing to much pressure would be the rings. Can I just replace the rings ? Should I have it honed out as well ? Mabey I should change the oil. When I got the tiller I changed the oil and used Lucas Heavy Duty oil.
for those interested in actual valve retainer removal you can skip all the yada yada to about 14 minutes.. it takes only a minute.. I do not know why he had this 20 minutes long..
I have compression and spark ,New gas and I tried starting fluid and the motor still will not start and I also cleaned the card, I did not take it off the engine, but I took the bowl off and the jet and cleaned it up,the spark is blue all blue, no yellow. The engine is a Tecumseh 7hp .please if you have any idea let me know. Thank you.
Did u check too see if u have points on your motor if yes u may have to check if your timming is off if u don't know look up a video on how to do points just rember points are done on the old motors not new hope this helps u
I dont ever what briggs &steattion think.,when they made this engine , a stupid lubesysten with none oilpump, none oilfilter, if you need too adjust the valve must the head remove off, and take out the valve and grind off the end with valvlepusserside...som sand inn the valve...
i am sure you know what you are doing but i don't have time to listen to all the extra jibber jabber. i wish all you people who make these videos would get to the point. i just don't have time to make a career out of these videos. i want to learn but i also want to work on my problem. thanks
Wow howsa bout some low down snake in the grass condense this god damned shaggy dog story to about 30 seconds - thanks - son of a bitch you could shut down Hoover Damn and power the cities with that boys jawbone instead.

Not boring! Very informative for a novice!

Needle nose pliers work even better and they don't slip and score the end of the valves up.
what do you set the gaps at ? Thanks for showing how they go back in.
I find the films are very helpful and I am still learning how to use my iPad still a am very thankful for your help
Thanks for this detailed explanation of valve removal for service newbies like myself
I take a couple dinner forks. Remove ONE of the tines in the middle tine row. Makes a nice gap. Easy right?
Thanks for the video. I've got a Techumseh with a burned valve and yard work to do. Just tried the procedure on a junk motor that's going to donate an unburnt valve, was able to get the retainer off and on. Thanks again..
Thanks! Nice close up and HD video of valve removal. Now I know how to remove them.
Needle nose pliers work even better than 2 screwdrivers.

Valve removal and installing starts at 13:00
Thank you for the vid! I wondered if I could remove the valves without the proper tool.. thanx 👍

what you wanna see is at 14:00
thanks for the info. but that was way too much
Does the exhaust valve use both upper and lower washers on the spring?

Just what needed to know. I don't do a lot of small engine work and did not want to buy a spring compressor. Thanks!
Have a pair of needle nose pliers? Works even better and easier than 2 screwdrivers and they don't score up the ends of the valves.

Great video, just how long did this valve job take ??? Thx
Very helpful. Thank you.
good advice but don't have the time to sit while you talk about everything but what some one asked. Fifteen minutes to get to the valve spring????
Thank for the tips !!
Is that a 3.5 horse?

+Jaime Vazquez yes I do have points and there New and I set them and I'm getting a blue spark
Thanks!
14 minutes in...you killed my phone's battery
nice info
