WOW, I'M NOT EVEN SURE WHAT TO SAY ABOUT THIS!!! But, I'm going to try. This response may be long. I have lived in Bolingbrook Illinois for 35 of my 55 years. We are a very diverse community. We, for the most part, all get along. I'm a 55 year old white male who is 6'1" with a 6'4" wing span and had a 38" vert. Now, back in the day, I played ALOT of b-ball. I had 4-5 neighbors that also did. Our local playground has 3 courts. Center court was were the REAL games happened. We would " Hold Court" for several games. So, 1 weekend day, my friends and I grabbed Center Court. 2 things happened, 1. A group of youngun's showed up and had "next". 2. Our Ladies had come to let us know it was time to come home. We pleaded with our Ladies for 1 more. The Ladies agreed. Other people caught wind of this too. Before the game started, we as a team looked at each other. A few head knods, some eye contact. We destroyed them. I remember the score as 21-7. Here's the the greatest thing about this story. While my friends and I were killing on the court, our Ladies got together and went to the store. The Ladies bought plenty of grillable food, ALOT of "beverages", (weekend) which they put on ice. That was 36 years ago. But I remember it like it was yesterday!! Well, at least until I started drinking that night!! LOLOL!
I am still _"digging"_ his creativity calling Dwarfs _"Diggers"_ hahahahaha. At least he had a very immersive style in his nonstop barrage of racially suggestive talk.
I don't know. Mining is dangerous and skilled stuff, so dwarfs of all people would respect them (with fine smiths above though). The bottom of the hierarchy could be dwarves who just transport mine materials, or do menial labor unrelated to the chain of crafting. In some lore, there's also big stigma against dwarves who ventures above ground. Another approach of hierarchy could be about the possession of caves or ores veins. In ancient societies, well-off peasant possessing a good share of land were respected, while basic farming workers paid on the day where the bottom of society, along with artist and jobs dealing with filth.
@@benjaminthibieroz4155 That is incredibly true. I like the idea of those who are relegated to menial labor being on the bottom. There’s no glory or honor in mucking stalls, emptying chamber pots, or being a street sweeper. Well, I guess depending on how those individuals came by such positions, and whether it’s a punishment or an actual job. Trying to come up with a Dwarven hierarchy based on career is actually really difficult now that you point it out.

@@Ghost_of_93 Dude. This isn’t about a black dude being racist. It’s about a white dude pretending to be a racist black stereotype as an excuse to freely use racial slurs. There’s no such thing as an “n-slur privilege” because if you can’t say it at birthday or pride rally, than you shouldn’t be free to use it. The “n-slur privilege” is a falsehood of comparisons to undermine the idea of white privilege. White privilege does exist because it is a systematic issue. I had one guy in a discord who... it's difficult to explain it without a screenshot, but he more or less said "It's okay if I make racist jokes, because I'm not actually racist."
No joke, for the first minute of the video, I was worried one of my players posted about one of my games. Genuinely had this happen in one of my games, but he was a goliath barb, but same thing. @Naukumaija Mau-mau Oh, 100%. Still though, I just always worry one of my games is going to end up in one of these videos, lol. Standard anxiety issues.
Let me just say, even if he actually was black that wouldn't make any of what he did okay. Being black shouldn't be an excuse to be racist, and we shouldn't say it isn't so just because they are.
eh its a bit different in this case. while he did go way too far, broke multiple boundaries, and displayed blatant homo/transphobia (all of which were valid to be kicked) some people cope with racism by making jokes about their own race. if it were another race he was making fun of, let's say southeast asians, it would be valid for them to call him out on it. but it's a bit different in this case when they assumed he was black and making jokes about himself and not others, it wouldn't exactly be racist (though it would be perpetuating racist stereotypes, so no recommended). i do agree that being black isn't an excuse to be racist but he wasn't exactly being racist here (at least in their minds, since he's not black this would be hella fucking racist). it's just a bit hard to call out others now with all these people saying stuff about "oh you get offended so easily" "you're not even _________, why are you getting offended for them, snowflake" "they're not offended, why should you be?" etcetera. though it would make sense for kron to call him out.
@@chashubokchoy8999 I mean I’ll be honest and say that as a White person who tries not to offend, I honestly do get uncomfortable around “self-deprecating” jokes by those of another race, particularly when it seems like they’re expecting a reaction out of me. Both of the following statements are 100% true: 1. "It is possible for a person to be bigoted against the group to which they belong, and calling them out on it is just as necessary as if from anyone else " 2. "People have the right to joke and use disparaging language from against their own group." The trick is knowing the difference. I also strongly feel that when it comes to any kind of comedy, you also have to know your audience. Some humor is fine in certain settings and not so much in others. And yeah, you can joke about whatever, but if it's unfair or uneducated, (and thus just plain unfunny) then you have to deal with people rightly calling you out for your shit.
I'm not sure how I feel about the idea that it was "consuming too much destructive black pop culture" that caused the racist player to act this way. It seemed more like bigotry, entitlement, and spite.
@Naukumaija Mau-mau no… it doesn’t make sense. Especially combined with the homophobia- dude knew what he was doing. Also if someone thinks that kind of obvious racism and caricature is “real” then they need a reality check and to go back to fifth grade to learn some critical thinking skills.

Possible, most people who do or say offensive things don't think what they're doing is offensive... but if he was pretending to be black because that made it OKAY for him to say those things (in his own words), then clearly some part of him KNEW that it wasn't okay for anyone (let alone a white dude) to talk like that, and was looking for an excuse to get away with it. Maybe it was a joke? I guess, that's an old fallback on anyone who crosses a line and realizes that no one else is on the same page as them. But even in those cases... once the "joke" fails to land and it becomes clear that no one is down for that, THEY USUALLY BACK OFF. They don't quintuple down on the exact same "joke" every time they speak. And as the old saying goes, "If you have to explain why a joke is funny, it isn't funny." So it obviously wasn't for the amusement of others, because nobody was amused. No, he knew what he was doing. He was showing everyone his true colours openly and proudly. And when someone shows you who they really are, believe them.

Not gonna lie, the idea of a Dwarven hierarchy of labor, with miners at the bottom and jewelers/smiths at the top sounds really cool lore wise.
The better your skill and finer your craft, the loftier your place and secure your position.

It’s not about a white person’s life being perfect, it’s about the societal advantage you have by being born white.

I played a rogue gnome, my roommate played a dragon born fighter, and the student was a 'white' (human) paladin.
We ran a session 0 where we're introduced to a dragon born dungeon guard who explained to us how traps worked, and the paladin's instinct was to attempt to cleave the tutorial guy with a sword, calling him a 'nasty ligger'. He got some damage but our dragon born fighter got a nasty hit, enough for us to convince him to stop attacking the guard.
Not much else to say about the session besides that the paladin set off a few nasty traps waltzing through the dungeon and sent us barrelling into another room with a goblin and an orc (who turned out to be two other travellers trying to navigate the dungeon!)
We ended the session by putting our heads together to solve a puzzle and opened up a path back outside!

Oh this made me unreasonably angry. As someone who is black, from the deep south and non binary, i feel like the guy OP talked about was tailor made to piss me off.
Just awful. Only part I found a little bit funny (little bit. very little), was the petty sendoff the guy gave to everyone, when he unmasked himself by his own stupidity. As if he was not able to just get the f out, he had to say something bad to everyone and that's just plain silly. True example of an awful person and an awful experience.
Usually an argument can be made against intent when someone is being called bigoted.

Caught up by 40K, bet he is one of those types that thinks Neckberdia is law when it comes to TTRPG
Sounds like the kind of people that say "I can't be racist... I'm black."
Well yeah there are self-loathing black people who are racist towards their own and towards other people of color such as Asians, Indigenous people, and Hispanics.
However, while prejudice exists in a lot of people, it’s important to check your privilege. White privilege is a thing, you are more likely to police putting more effort into finding missing white people than they do on black individuals. Not always the case.
A black person has to work twice as hard as a white person because of the systematic biases in places against them. Black people are less likely to get loans to start their own business than white people.
This story is not of a black man being racist and homophobic, it’s a story of a white guy pretending to be black so he can say slurs and be a stereotype. He wants the false belief of the “n-slur privilege” without consequences. I say false belief because even if you are black, it’s not socially acceptable to actually say it in a public place. You’ll still get disgusted and uncomfortable looks and you still will most likely be ask to leave because the language isn’t tolerated.
Like, you wouldn’t say “fuck” at a child’s birthday party, so it’s just one of those, “know the room” type thing.

I feel like a group that would be cool to have a trans man NPC would never get this far into a campaign with someone like this.
Depends, tbh. "Wokeness," (i.e. knowledge and desire to not be a dick to people) isn't a blanket thing, and everybody's got blind spots. A person could have a very nuanced understanding of antiblack racism in the United States and work their ass off as an activist, but still be an unhinged transphobe, for example. Or, a person could spend their lives pushing for women's rights and still hate immigrants. Or maybe they know literally everything there is to know about all the issues facing their home country, but are entirely ignorant to the problems people deal with on the other side of the world. In this case, the group seemed to have a pretty good grasp on LGBT+ issues, but--being from a geographical location where's there' just aren't a lot of black people--was fairly clueless when it came to antiblack racism. They could tell something was wrong, but they couldn't really articulate what or why.
@@n.l.g.6401 ahhh yes, I totally agree with you and you make very good points. I forgot the part about what countries they were in too. It just seemed very strange, sometimes I wonder about these stories. But yeah. We definitely all have blind spots. I hope the people in this group keep doing some learning and thinking. I feel like maybe the group fell apart even after the troll left because they might all have felt kind of gross about how much they put up with and didn't acknowledge. It's too bad but hopefully a chance for growth for them all.

Pro tip: If your player online is using racial slurs and their excuse is "Relax, I'm [ethnicity/race of slur] and it doesn't bother me", chances are they aren't that race.
Pro tip: That is bullshit and we all know from talking to people that faking race is an incredibly rare thing for anyone to do. Don't let paranoia make you into the asshole who said "Prove you're black!".
Unless you're on Twitter.
Also pro tip: observe your players' actions and behavior. IF they are faking their race, as incredibly rare as it is, there are likely other indications that can tell you as much.
Finding a troll, is not difficult, generally speaking, trolls have similar behavioral traits between them.
I want emphasize that this is GENERAL not specific, individuals exist and are unique, however there are common traits to watch for thst put up flags. These traits should be observed, noted, and addressed.

This is breaking my brain. As you can tell, my name is Kron. I have never in all my life met another Kron. On top of that I lived in Croatia for a long time, meaning my dnd group was all eastern europeans. I keep waiting for this story to ring a bell and to go "oh yeah, I do remember that game" but no, it's very clearly not about me... Is this how people named 'John' feel every time someone tells a story?
Credit to the OP for wanting to give the benefit of the doubt, but honestly, I get the impression that he was just an asshole who wanted to say racist & homophobic shit and get away with it, because he thought it was cool and edgy (and probably because that's what he really believes). And when his house of cards came crashing down on him, he did what all of these assholes inevitably do, and blame everyone else for their own shitty behaviour.
Maybe he genuinely didn't believe he was being offensive or anything?
