I just recently learned that 743 is the same as 823. I'm new to fountain pens, and I was eyeing 823, because so many people rave about it and call it their grail pen. However, cleaning these vacuum filling pens seem like a nightmare... I say this as someone who's never owned anything but a kakuno. I feel like cartridges are the easiest way to go, so if 743 is the same thing, I'd rather go for 743 and use cartridges.
If you are new then maybe you should start with a Pilot 74. Don’t be a sucker to all the hype and marketing. Many of the ppl that rave about things get bribed with free products in return.
I have a Custom Heritage 92. It is an impressive writer but it's piston filling mechanism makes it difficult to clean sometimes as I have to flush it many times over.
They are both high quality. I prefer the Custom 743's feel. I'm not sure if there is a real difference in the plastic or it is just in my head because of the transparency of the 823.
@@putteringpenman Thanks! It's really difficult to judge from videos and photos. But even with just your description I'm noticing that without even holding them Im already getting that vibe from the transparency.
Is it me, or does the 823 look thicker/girthier in this video than the 743? I gravitate to the bigger grip whenever I can because it makes them more comfortable for by big hands. Does anyone know if they are the exact same size thickness-wise?
Great comparison review. I had a dedicated ink for my 823 too then I started looking around because I thought: "Come. On. There's got to be a way to clean this without having to draw up water into it a million and a half times!" I found a guy who demonstrates step-by-step how to clean a Custom 823! He's here: ua-cam.com/video/8ZRJOefejoQ/v-deo.html Granted, it's still going to take a little time but it's pretty easy. Just make sure you plug up the sink if that's where you're cleaning. I use a plug at my sink and I put a paper towel over the plug just to be extra sure. I've cleaned my 823 several times now and it's perfect. Hope that helps.😊
I LOVE the 743, and have wanted to purchase one for a good while, but black and verdigris are not appealing. If I could get the dark red one, I would make the investment.
I’m curious about the diameters of body and cap of these two pens? Are they the same? Different? Quite different? Somehow, the 823 looks wider to me than the 7. Is this true, or is it some trick of the light and translucency? Also, the gold band ornament on the cap of the 823 looks a bit broader (the one which has writing and other ornament set into it). Is this accurate?
I would have liked to own the 743 because that’s my birth year/date, but the price is a little too high, so I’ll be getting the 742, which is nearly identical.
2 questions if I may. Is there any difference in the weight of these two pens, and is it enough to be really a noticeable difference for writing?....and does the filling mechanism give a different distribution of weight to the pen which affects its balance in the hand?
I own a 823 and from what ive read， its a bit heavvier than the 743 mainly due to the metal rod filling system in the 823. The balance of the 823 feels fantastic, ive had no issue writing posted or unposted.
The 823 is 3g heavier than the 743 and just slightly more back heavy. But it is barely noticeable while writing. Both pens are very comfortable and well balanced.

I have searched many other European sites for a 743 with no luck at any nib size, which is quite strange since I think many pen enthusiasts would want to buy it. The only way to get a #15 Pilot nib in & sizes is by buying a 823. Personally if I'm going to pay that much money for a pen I'd want it with a special nib like ,,, or even .

After 8 years using fountain pens, I agree with you. Cartridge/converter pens are great.
If the 823 is your "grail pen" you need to expand your horizons.

The gold cap band on the 823 is wider, and the bottom finial is longer. The 823 is also heavier, which makes it feel a little more luxurious to me.

The 823 is 3 grams heavier than the 743, but the feel is exactly the same in my hand. Both are very comfortable posted and unposted.
