  • How to grow a kiwi tree or vine from seed! The kiwi vines are now 17 months old and they are still doing great considering the extremely hot summer we've had here in North Texas, Zone 8a!!!
In this video I'll be updating you on the propagated branches I trimmed off during the last kiwi update:
    • Propagating Kiwi Fruit...
As well as following up with you about my testing out a few different growing, training, and pruning methods for them - as a reminder:
    1) I had trimmed the side shoots off of one of them to promote vertical growth along a guiding post to gain height.
    2) I topped several of them to try to keep them lower to the ground for now to promote fatter trunks - eventually looking at letting them gain height.
    3) I left some alone altogether and just let them vine like crazy.
I'm learning quite a bit about these plants and I'm happy you are here to join me as we watch their journey.
With kiwi, you need to have at least 1 male and 1 female plant in order to produce fruit. In fact, you only need 1 male plant for every 8-10 female plants. I have about 12 plants growing so I'm hoping that at least one is a male. I'm assuming I have at least 1 female plant.

Sorry it's been 3 months since the last update. They struggled during the 100 degree summer months here in Texas, but they are making a good comeback now. Thanks for watching and if you haven't seen the journey from the very beginning, here ya go:

Hi, it's not a nutritious or sun exposure problem, your kiwis have chlorosis (both the cuttings in the pots and the outside plants). It's a disease, caused by the lack of iron in the soil, which makes the leaves turn yellow and eventually die, but also hinders the plants growth (it can affect different types of plants, but kiwis are ESPECIALLY prone to that). To fix that you need to add iron sulphate, I do that by mixing around 100 grams with the top layer of soil and then water very well (that is per plant) or recently by diluting 200 grams per 10 liters of water and then I water several plants with the solution. It's done several times а year, each year (not only once and for all) and when you do that for the first time and if your plants are diseased, you might have to repeat the procedure several weeks later if there's no result during that time. Beside that, we have very hot summers and I water them every single day during the summer and they don't like wind (especially dry wind) (their weather and soil requirements are just the opposite of grape vines).
My plants are from seed, too, 19 months old and I have 14, planted in groups in different locations of my yard. What I've noticed is that they have similar growth rate compared to one another in one group, but there's sometimes a huge difference in growth between plants from two different places (some groups of plants grow very well, others are just average and some others really struggle).
A friend of mine managed to get his first flowers after the fourth year (he grew them from seed, too), but they were only male and then he got his first fruit after the sixth year, when his female plants flowered for the first time. According to him the fruit was true to type and even tasted better.

Mihail Hristov Wow Great info! That's why I love posting and watching vids - I learn from others! I'll try the iron sulfate and I really appreciate your help. By the way - great news about your friend's plants! Now I'm excited again about mine!

For propagating cuttings (general, not just Kiwi): use raw organic honey to dip the cuttings in and plant straight into soil (cut the bottom just below a leaf node to get to the stem cells). This will avoid the later shock of transfer from water to soil when a lot of plants are lost. Also leave only a small leaf or section of leaf on the cutting (I like some leaf if it is possible, but remember that the stem will need to support the leaf with nutrients, so the leaf needs to be small) The honey works as a root stimulant and propolis in the honey prevents fungus. With doing Begonias, I have a 100% strike rate.

Boa tarde. Você não pode distinguir a diferença entre kiwis masculino e feminino até florescerem. Isso pode levar até 4-7 anos. Desculpe por não ter uma resposta melhor.
