Recording the upright bass in a room with other instruments calls for compromises. Since an upright bass is often the quietest instrument in a given ensemble, you may need to close-mike it, closer than you’d prefer, to avoid bleed from other instruments. You may also need to go for tighter polar patterns than you’d choose if the instrument were being recorded solo.
It's a sound isolation booth. Since the sound of the doublebass is so delicate compared to the drums and brass section, it is easier to record when isolated, and can be better mixed with the other instruments! Using this method, there's no bleed-in from the other instruments on the microphone recording the bass.
It might be because it makes a more pure sound, and so the mic in the room doesn't capture any other sound from the instruments; perhaps because the mic needs to be super sensitive in the first place to capture such low tones. Just a guess
I'm not adept with music and sound. Is there any particular reason why the Cello must be recorded inside that box? I can take some guesses but it'd be better if it was clarified.
