  • In this episode, I'm joined by Everything Everything's Jonathan Higgs to talk about ugliness in music - how it works, how it doesn't work, and the boundaries between the two! We talk about a range of music, and discuss Everything Everything, their latest album, and their general approach to making music.
    Enjoy!
    Songs we discuss:
Dean Heslop - Say You're Sorry
    D4nny - Goodbye
Van der Graaf Generator - Habit of the Broken Heart
    Jacob Collier - Flinstones
Scouting for Girls - James Bond

Hi! I LOVED this interview! I am a legit "American Boomer" and am SO tired of the music of my era(s) and standard pop ... This convo helped me to understand why. I'm not a musician, but love music that has what I call "weird notes" - could never explain it. It was cool to hear Real Musicians talk about all this stuff from a professional standpoint.
It made me think of 2 sayings from a brilliant book "Sleights of Mind: What the Neuroscience of Magic Reveals About Our Everyday Deceptions" (by Susana Martinez-Conde and Stephen L. Macknik...
"A magical feeling takes place when our expetations are violated" and "All great art is based on violation of prediction."
    Thanks for your work!

Brilliant discussion, thanks for sharing! It's funny about Jacob Collier - I definitely agree that stuff like the Flintstones cover is a very acquired taste, but in recent years his songs like All I Need or Sleeping On My Dreams have dialed it back and focused much more on strong pop hooks, with the extended chords and other eccentricities used as occasional spots of detail rather than a constant focus. (Also I think that mockney "JUST FOAH THE DAY" is an anti-hook - objectively awful but potent enought that I've found myself randomly singing it around the house)

I may have come across more anti-Collier in the video than I actually am haha. I do *like* his stuff, but I guess it's just one of those things where I sometimes want to *love* his stuff but something puts me off his music.
It honestly feels a little ridiculous someone like me even stating such an opinion about someone so much more musically skilled/talented than myself, and more than anything, I just like to explore what makes us like some music and not others.
I do agree that those two tunes by him really work well, and there are others I definitely enjoy (his covers of Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, and All Night Long I think are great!), and I obviously find his stuff mind-expanding and all that - but he's never going to be one of my favourites (although maybe I should never say never!)
Anyway, thanks so much for watching, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I really think much of Lulu by Lou Reed and Metallica could go in this category. ps. this was a fascinating conversation, would love to see again. Jonathan's views on music are very interesting and to have an interviewer who can keep up on the music side is ace

Another Lou Reed release I've struggled to sit through in its entirety is his Metal Machine Music LP. But I expect in these times, with drone music not being considered particularly original or shocking, it doesn't sound very original or disconcerting. But at the time of its release, everyone was like 'wtf is this?'

    Wow !!
How are you only on this level of subs, with this level of interview ??
I’ve got to assume that you just need the right vid,( or series of vids), to interact with the algorithm in the right way. I’ve seen it happen with Andy Edwards channel and a channel called Mercurial No.6, where they had great content but were stuck languishing for years then just caught the right break. Merc’s now at 100k plus and Andy has recently took off and now at 20k plus and climbing. Just need one vid and can see you taking off.

Very very interesting interview. Not sure if I agree with everything said, but it doesn’t matter, because the exploration of the ideas is the point. Plus, the first album by his band blew my fuckin head off … and I am a massive Prog fan….And to a lesser degree Jazz-Fusion ….And,( and I’m sure this would be more Jonathan’s ball park), bands like Radiohead, Tortoise, Trail of Dead etc.
‘NASA Is On Your Side’ is fuckin sublime.
Right, off to go and re-listen to their entire brilliant catalogue.

Anyone know the name of the sub-Reddit pages (that JH mentions at the start) where you can find examples of this type of music? (I've tried searching for ugly music on Reddit but can't find anything relevant.)
