I don't think content/length matters that much. What matters more is if you walk away from the game satisfied. Some games drag out too long or have too much content, which can wear you down by the end.
I agree, and to an extent it really depends on the game. PirateSoftware said something to the same effect that basically the length of the game doesn't matter, it's the quality of the experience. However, I want to give my perspectove on why I feel it's still important as a factor, even if it's not the main thing. For context, at least in my reviews, I only award points for the value critera "Time VS Money" if the content that was presented during that time was a quality product. Theres plenty of media that doesn't respect the viewers time, be it shows, movies, or games, by just padding in fluff for time to compensate for a lack of substance. That behavior doesn't fly with me. I determine whether or not the content was of a given high enough quality usually by how well it scores against all the other criteria in my review. Your game needs to be good in order for the time to be worth it regardless of how long you spent playing it, and so the game has to be good in order for this score to matter. In terms of my stance, it's not super uncommon for a big AAA game nowadays to release with the bare minimum amount of content to scrape by; often locking the true extent of the full game behind microtransactions or battlepasses. The quality of the actual experience may be good, but they just don't give enough of it in general, or they're restricting it to milk their audience. Either way, if another game is equally well made, but is properly fleshed out with more content than the alternative, then that game deserves to be rewarded in comparison to the competition. I also recognize that having a game run for too long, even if it's good, can be a problem. Baldur's Gate 3 is a game I loved, but I felt like it was too long. Finishing a campaign is a genuine commitment. Same thing with Persona games. I have a buddy playing persona 5 royal right now and he still hasn't beaten it nearly 150 hours in, which is insane. However, I'd much prefer a game that gives me way too much than one which gives me too little. And also, for every person like me who prefers consistently faster paced games, or at least games that allow you to determine the pace for yourself, there's someone who loves the long and slow grind to the top. Knowing that that spectrum of perspectives on game length goes both ways, I generally try to shoot for a middle ground when determining if something has met the threshhold for being "long enough." And from a particularly biased point of view, I've rarely ever had a lot of money. So if I'm going to have to spend a lot of money on a game, I want to know that it's going to be a good bang for my buck. If my options are: A. 9/10 quality game that lasts for 5 hours or B. an 8/10 game that lasts for 20 hours, then I'd almost always prefer to go with option B because I know that I'm probably going to get more fun out of it without sacrificing too much in the realm of quality. In the end, buy a game that you think is good or fun. Don't buy something just because it will take a lot of time. But if you're trying to organize games for people qualitatively, then it makes sense to reward good games that give a lot of content, while effectively punishing games that are either good, but skimp the player on content, or bad and pad out for time.
@@lonewolfex Great reply! I agree with most of the points here. Also I think replay value should be factored in as well, a game could be 5-10 hours long but have a lot of replay value making it last much longer.
Maybe longest play time that stays fresh. However, even "fresh" is personal opinion. I start to lose interest when the mechanics get repetitive after dozens of hours. Leveling up anything does not qualify for me. To some, just a new atmosphere or environment keeps it fresh. Not sure how to rate this one, but simply length is not it, IMHO.
I hadn’t played Balatro and loved Astro Bot bot still wanted Balatro to win just because I find it cool how one guy can win the biggest GOTY in the biggest medium.

Wow, this was very impressive, even after watching the award show, it was still great. I personally wanted Metaphor to win, but it got best Narrative, art and RPG, so im satisfied
There's no use arguing about this, GOTY is just extremely subjective. Balatro could be the best game ever created but it would never stand a chance for me because I hate card games and am sick and tired of almost every indie game being a rogue-like. Meanwhile Astro Bot may not be the longest, most replayable, have the most complex mechanics, but it's the only game in many many years that made me smile from start to finish, so nobody can tell me that Astro Bot didn't deserve to be GOTY, because the way it made me feel is GOTY material for me.
This comment is the one! I completly agree. For me Wukong made me feel like i was playing BOTW and TW3 back then, it felt so good and made me smile a lot. I think the 10% mostly voted for Wukong, players ' choice... Any game without the support from players is just nothing, regardless how many awards you've got...
It wasn't that close, though? Oh, so, it won Indie, Debut Indie (considering they repeat more often than not...? I like them having a Debut Indie Game category, but maybe have it be Best Non-Debut Indie Game and Best Debut Indie Game...? To prevent redundancy...?) and Mobile. At TGA, those are either borderline (Indie and Debut Indie) or explicit (Mobile) gag categories. Whoop-de-doo, so you're probably 4th or 5th place of 6. (1st: Astro Bot, 2nd: Metaphor (and these two was the fight), 3rd: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, 4th and 5th: Balatro and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, 6th: Black Myth: Wukong.)
Your video is solid and I gotta say your editing skills are on point Really liked your analysis. Also not from the big tugg but I am glad that you are getting recognition for your effort
This was a great video! I however did spot an error toward the end at the "Final Scoring", 23:39. I noticed you had accidentally swapped FF7 Rebirth, Elden Ring and Metaphor: ReFantazio's Player Score at the section where every games' critic and user score is listed at once. Elden Ring should have been the 90.0, FF7 the 89.0, and Metaphor the 94.0 It's just a minor mistake, but one worth correcting nonetheless.
On the topic of SOTE, it doesn't seem logical to say we're only judging the DLC, not the main game, but then counting the main game into the price. That's disingenuous because if you spend the money for both the DLC and the game, you're getting the value of the DLC and the game, whereas you're presenting it as "you pay for both, only get the value of one", of course it's gonna come out losing like that. The price of the DLC is 40$, that's what that particular content costs, you can't count the cost of the base game but then ignore the value of it and assign the whole price to just the SOTE content. Otherwise by that logic it could also be argued that any game that's exclusive to a console also costs the price of the console if you want to play it...? If we're assuming the player already has the console, then it's only fair to assume they also have the base game if we're talking about an expansion. I understand there being a problem with nominating a DLC as such, I personally don't think neither SOTE or FF14 should've been elegible for GOTY, but if we're deciding to treat it as a separate game, then let's do that properly.
Not only do you need to buy the base-game, you have to almost finish it to both reach the dlc and to be a good level to not instantly get murked unless you're iron pineapple or lenny levels of god gamer.
23:41 Black Myth being on either ends for the Critical Score and the Player Score really just sums up their reputation since release 😭 This really was a great video! I trust your judgment And your reasoning is informative and thorough and honest Which means Astrobot winning goty was not rigged it was the best decision from both sides But I will say that players do not listen to or trust the word of critics Edit: I forgot the bonus round and was surprised of the top contender I’m very glad dlc did not win anything
I just bought balatro today and I can see why it was nominated, before I knew it I was sucked in the gameplay for half an hour and stopped myself before I got too addicted🤣
Using how long a game as a factor for money's worth is not a great way to judge that, a long game doesn't mean a great game. For example, AC Valhalla is the longest AC game and most people would consider it one of the weaker games Also, for money's worth, why wasn't the free DLC released (with promise of more for the next 2 months), not counted for AstroBot? That adds to the value of the game and makes it a longer game too
It was also a factor that amounted to between 1% and 6% of the total score for that reason. It's relevant, but it is far an away an auxiliary criteria, not the main thing determining score. In terms of Astro Bot, I will apologize for my ignorance on that. My understanding of the DLC was that they were mostly just free additional bots, and not additional worlds/levels. You're right in that case, that's on me. In terms of giving this comment the reply I think it deserves, I already basically wrote a book reply to Wiseman108 who left a similar comment if you want to read it.
Haven’t watched yet but by the metrics you listed at the start balatro should 100% win Also like you said you definitely shouldn’t play balatro because you will probably end up putting hundreds of hours into it
I love how if I click the thing that says "Translate to English," all it does is move the exclamation point over by one space. haha Massive vote of confidence though. Hugely appreciated
The reason i voted for Astro bot was because it was the only other game that wasn't just an ultra realistic souls like game. as for balatro, i don't play card games. also Astro bot theme goes hard
Did I miss something in the calculation? It shouldn't had be like this? (Public) + (Critic) + (Bonus) Balatro: (9.65) + (9.14) + (1.2) = 19.99 Astro Bot: (9.5) + (9.66) + (0.2) = 19.36 Elden Ring DLC: (8.9) + (9.7) + (0.7) = 19.3 Metaphor: (9) + (9.3) + (0.8) = 19.1 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: (9.4) + (8.85) + (0.7) = 18.95 Black Myth Wukong: (9.5) + (8.2) + (0.6) = 18.3 Also, I know that there is not a proper way to avoid this, but there is a huge bias in the critic reviews chosen for some games in this video. I would be fine with a score that was + or - 0.2 in relation to the Metacritic but Elden Ring has a + 0.3 and FF a - 0.35 (thats a LOT, wow in your last list is at a 8.8? thats a - 0.4, thats actually huge). Edit.: Oh I understand what happen with the scores, in the screen with the scores of all games you placed some games in the wrong spot, thats why.
idk i still think black myth wukong shoulve won because of the story, details, complex character designs, and graphics lol, tho kinda weird how there was a dlc for goty
This proved player cannot vote because ppl can pick GOTY by just the game look pretty ignore the fact have gameplay problem. Lucky they fixed their game now, imaging they sent the latest version for Critic, I bet it will get better score.
I can’t lie I think that astrobot is undeserving of goty. I haven’t played it. And that’s the problem a game where only the people who bought the PS5 for an honestly unreasonable price get to play the shortest playtime game on the list for a £60 price tag that markets on nostalgia that I personally just don’t have and many others may not have either. The fact that a £40 DLC has it beat in game depth and availability that in itself is attached to another game of the year says volumes. And when comparing it to other goty winners like bg3 or elden ring it’s just not deserving
@@epoopy1 I’m very certain you haven’t played all those game of the year candidates so if you want to play it like that you shouldn’t really be talking either, I’ve watched gameplay of Astro Bot and while it’s fun I personally don’t think it should’ve been game of the year, its all but personally opinion and you should respect it
i stop listening when exclusive being downside of goty exclusivity make competition and competition brings quality today the exclusivity getting blur and what happen? live service everywhere everyone wants a profit not a praise anymore
Its not that people cant feel happy for good games, its just that the game that undeniably shouldve won cant get the recognition for being a hidden gem
Astro 100% deserved it. Wukong was the biggest economical success and also 100% deserved it. But you have to be insane to hate on Astro. If you hate Astro, then you never understood the message of Souls games. Figure that last part Sherlock Holmes.
Still talking about more content in games , its stupidest thing i have heard in 2024. I don't want nore content, i want quality n manageable game length.
"Astrobot has reviewed monstrously well with both reviewers and critics alike" Wasn't astrobot literally the first one out in the viewers' voting...? It feels wrong that a game that was clearly the least liked by viewers wins just because they give critics so much more influence. Tho admittedly I may be biased because I don't believe the critics' opinion is worth anything to begin with.

In terms of giving this comment the reply I think it deserves, I already basically wrote a book reply to Wiseman108 who left a similar comment if you want to read it.
Haven’t watched yet but by the metrics you listed at the start balatro should 100% win
Also like you said you definitely shouldn’t play balatro because you will probably end up putting hundreds of hours into it
Big Tugg approved !
I love how if I click the thing that says "Translate to English," all it does is move the exclamation point over by one space. haha
Massive vote of confidence though. Hugely appreciated
The reason i voted for Astro bot was because it was the only other game that wasn't just an ultra realistic souls like game. as for balatro, i don't play card games. also Astro bot theme goes hard
Great video sucks to see Black Myth Wukong not winning GOTY, but hey, congrats to PlayStation for their 30th anniversary and getting GOTY.
I think Geoff saw this video
Papa tugg sent me! Great work
None of the nominees deserved goty.
Did I miss something in the calculation? It shouldn't had be like this?
(Public) + (Critic) + (Bonus)
Balatro: (9.65) + (9.14) + (1.2) = 19.99
Astro Bot: (9.5) + (9.66) + (0.2) = 19.36
Elden Ring DLC: (8.9) + (9.7) + (0.7) = 19.3
Metaphor: (9) + (9.3) + (0.8) = 19.1
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: (9.4) + (8.85) + (0.7) = 18.95
Black Myth Wukong: (9.5) + (8.2) + (0.6) = 18.3
Also, I know that there is not a proper way to avoid this, but there is a huge bias in the critic reviews chosen for some games in this video.
Bro has been tugged
was that a fucking ultrakill song at the start of the video???? 🤯🤯🤯🤯
DLCs SHOULD NEVER QUALIFY TO WIN GOTY
I hope its not rude to tug some one but you just gained a subscriber
idk i still think black myth wukong shoulve won because of the story, details, complex character designs, and graphics lol, tho kinda weird how there was a dlc for goty
This proved player cannot vote because ppl can pick GOTY by just the game look pretty ignore the fact have gameplay problem.
Lucky they fixed their game now, imaging they sent the latest version for Critic, I bet it will get better score.
@kahchunrock5582 This also proved u never played the game and only heard about it from critics
@@Z33RL1 Maybe u should try Astro Bot to see y this is GOTY.
Im tugging my shit to this
(Balatro sweep or im going to )
Astro Bot deserved to win
I can’t lie
I think that astrobot is undeserving of goty.
If you haven’t played it then don’t judge it, also it being ps5 exclusive doesn’t effect if the game is deserving or not
How is the ps5 price unreasonable?
@@epoopy1 I’m very certain you haven’t played all those game of the year candidates so if you want to play it like that you shouldn’t really be talking either, I’ve watched gameplay of Astro Bot and while it’s fun I personally don’t think it should’ve been game of the year, its all but personally opinion and you should respect it
Unreasonable price? You have a pc or sum?
its not most accessible game of the year
The Sony Awards
arrived via tugboat
The Tuggs Arrive
Press start Dan tdm reference?
You’ve been tugged
Bro needs to get a better pc! Wukong ran fine for me and i'm on a 3070..
I didnt come from that Guy i found this in the reccomended
It’s tugging time
Wukong
i stop listening when exclusive being downside of goty
exclusivity make competition and competition brings quality
today the exclusivity getting blur and what happen? live service everywhere
everyone wants a profit not a praise anymore
GTA6 is gonna win next year we all know
Proud tugger here😊
Love from bigtug
Damn people just can't be happy for a good game can they 😔
Its not that people cant feel happy for good games, its just that the game that undeniably shouldve won cant get the recognition for being a hidden gem
@@thegamingkid6973black myth wukong is overrated fym hidden gem, unless you mean balatro then i agree thankfully its getting popular from goty
Pikmin was not even nominated 😭
Pikmin 4 came out last year??????????
Good video but say Balatro right
FYI, there are three ways to pronounce the word "balatro," and the game developer has no preference as long as you say it with confidence!
No offense to balatro, I thought it was a fun game but I don't even think it is the best indie game of the year let alone it's nomination for goty
Astro 100% deserved it.
Wukong was the biggest economical success and also 100% deserved it.
But you have to be insane to hate on Astro.
If you hate Astro, then you never understood the message of Souls games.
Figure that last part Sherlock Holmes.
Not counting the biased Western journalist bullshit? This video is a waste of my time
how balatro even there,stupid game
Game awards are not especially relevant. Player’s choice is what matters. You know, the $$$. ;)
That's what I said. That's the award I would want. Black Myth won the Golden Joystick Best Game - basically a gamer's choice.
players choice has three gacha games i dont think players should have a choice
Still talking about more content in games , its stupidest thing i have heard in 2024. I don't want nore content, i want quality n manageable game length.
A copy of super mario ..won..
never played astro nor mario i see
I’m just happen Elden ring didint win

"Astrobot has reviewed monstrously well with both reviewers and critics alike"
Wasn't astrobot literally the first one out in the viewers' voting...? It feels wrong that a game that was clearly the least liked by viewers wins just because they give critics so much more influence. Tho admittedly I may be biased because I don't believe the critics' opinion is worth anything to begin with.
