Suggestion (haven't looked to see if anyone else has said it): Get yourself a park model for now and Mom a RV. Then later swap Mom to the park model and keep the RV to travel in. That's similar to what my parents did when they retired - they lived in a mobile home and traveled in the RV.

In Houston as kids we said “soda or soda water” lol. Quick story: my family of 6 lived in a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom 33ft Travel Trailer for almost a year in 2020 when we relocated from Houston to North Texas while getting our 15 acre homestead site ready to move on. It was hard coming from a 3500 sq ft suburban home. All off us living there taught us what we needed as far as usable space and necessities, it was as blessing. It forced us to spend more time together it was a good for us as a family.

When Granger Smith was living in a camper, they had it inside a barn so they made a living room outside the trailer and put a bathroom in the corner of the barn. They also had their washer and dryer in the barn. They used the trailer for their kitchen and bedrooms. They had a family of 4 and 2 big dogs in there!

My number 1 suggestion on getting a camper that you are planning on living in for a year or more, is to get one with enough space that everyone can have their own place to have privacy and alone time. You will never complain about having too much space. It is already a small space. The largest ones are only a couple hundred square feet and as time goes on it will only get smaller. You are going to bring things in, it's going to fill up, and the feeling that you are always on top of one another can get to you. There is a reason why everyone always trades up to the bigger model. Plus, the larger models will hold more of their value if you decide to sell. If you decide to keep it, put it on the back side of the pond, skirt it, build a little deck and use it as an office / podcast space / guest house.

I have found it incredibly easy to install temporary dog fencing with t-posts and welded wire, which comes in different heights. We use both farm gates and chain link gates which are very lightweight and come in different widths depending on the mower size or what you needed to move through it. The only wood posts you'd really need would be to hang the gate and corners. Then your littles are still in their own fence, easy access, protection from predators etc. I'd be concerned about the stress that you would put them under with an invisible fence, electric fence system. I've seen dogs (as a trainer) who refused to go into parts of the yard because they were so afraid of the fence monster.

  • @dianamcelroy4386

I’ve had a Canine Fence for over 20 years. They are great for keeping your dogs in but not for keeping others out. Very little upkeep! If your dogs are chipped you can get a doggy door that recognizes their chips & only lets your chipped dogs in.

can the park model that had soft spots be professionally re-roofed totally stripped back in the factory and redone - the cost to fix it is taken off the price - then their should be a warranty for the work done on the roof by the company that did the work - you could be in this park home for 2 years

  • @robynwilson842

Here’s the thing with “invisible fencing” for your pets, although they seem like a great idea in theory they actually “trap” your pets into a specific area. That means that although your dogs will not go outside the perimeter nothing stops a predators from coming into that area. A stray dog etc can come in and harm your pet and your pet has nowhere to run to to escape. I know that you probably would never leave your littles outside alone anyway but it’s just something to be aware of. I volunteer for a dog rescue group and we do not adopt to anyone with invisible fences.

    • @donnalawson4235

GREAT POINT! Never thought of predators coming into such an area. Perhaps electric netting would solve that problem? Personally, I’ll stay with my 6’ privacy fence. If feel exposed without it. With it I feel I have a safe perimeter.

Hey y'all I just had a thought. Right at the end of your podcast you were talking about possibly selling the park model once your house is built. Why don't you place the park model in such a way that you can move your mama into it. Or you can use it for a guesthouse or something like that. It could be a little apartment for Mary Carl as well when she gets a little older. Lots of different possibilities there. Having it set up in a permanent spot will just add value to your property in the end

Electricity and water to an outbuilding/ barn/ canning kitchen for w and d, freezers, and an extra stove, freeze dryer, etc. Keeping the camper in a 'camper' port will keep rain and hail off off the unit as well as shade it in the heat of summer. I have lived in my 32 ft tag travel trailer 3 years now. I looked at park models recently. I consider them to be a step between travel trailers and mobile homes. They are usually fairly heavy and not great to be pulled a lot. Park models offer a more solid floor and usually a little more room. The problem with travel trailers is the floors on most of them get soft with constant living them. I have noticed mine starting to do this. If you buy used make sure to walk on the floors and make sure they are solid.

I have birds. What about the Canned Ham? Set that up as Mary Carl’s living area. You could get a monitor if you would feel better to be able to monitor the canned ham during the night. The birds are used to having their own room. This may be what they need to have their own space. They can also be out of their cages whenever Mary Carl wants.

I would think she is too young to be in a separate camper. If she was like 16 that would be different. Also there is no potty. I wonder if the birds can stay in the canned ham at night. They sure have their hands full figuring this all out.

@@JackieHall71 yes. That’s what I meant but Mary Carl could have a baby monitor to feel comfortable that the birds are ok at night etc. it could be her space during the day to have the birds out etc. Just a suggestion. This little family will figure out what’s best for all their brood.

@@pamelaremme38 Bingo. I was born in and grew up in the San Francisco bay area... there, we call it soda. Hubby was born 100 miles away, but was raised in Nebraska... it's 'pop' there. So, the terms, to us, are interchangeable. We call a coke 'Coke' for it's a brand name. Same as for Pepsi, et al. But if you're asking someone if they wanted a carbonated drink, other than a 'seltzer' or club soda, it's regional... 'pop' or 'soda'.

Ok Y'all, here's the low down on the camper lingo. A camper is the thing that goes on the back of a pick up truck. You camp in it where ever your truck can take you. A lot of hunters use them to sleep in.
A travel trailer is the the thing you camp in that has a tongue that hooks onto a ball on the back of your pick up truck. They can be hooked to the bumper (for a bumper pull trailer) or in the bed (for a 5th wheel trailer.) The ones that have the trailer and motor combined are motor homes( not to be confused with Mobil Homes.)
Call it soft drinks and everyone in the US should understand.

The way Jason and Brooke have been talking, there's going to be more than goats, geese, chickens, cats, peacocks 🦚, pigs 🐖, and 10,000 birds 🐦. And now cows🐄 and donkeys. This will be a real learning experience for Mary Carl and mom&dad.

Definitely hook your Blackwater up to a sewer. We live in our camper all summer and hauling blackwater away is hard work every 3 to 4 days, so hook up to sewer, but leave the valve closed until you need to empty to avoid any black tank pyramids, which will be the end of your black tank.
