  • I recently spent some time in a small village on the Yukon River. Rampart is a couple hours down river from the Dalton Hwy Bridge. A few hours north of Fairbanks. It was a unique trip, and a great experience.

    Floated Yukon summer of 85 spent the winter. There was way more people , a store, school, community activities, big Christmas whole village traded gifts. Thanks for the video. Those tracks you show are wolf not bear.

      Thanks. The last few decades have seen a mass migration of the Native community to the more developed cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks. The last few years have seen a big resurgence in rural development. At one point Rampart was down to only a couple dozen people.

    Those are canine tracks, not bear tracks

      lol yeah my mistake, I don't come across wolf tracks very often in Wasilla. They were impressively large. I might be back up that way this summer so maybe I’ll get lucky and see one. The wild life around the village was pretty evasive

      Right on. Now you know! Hope you make it back out there next year. It’s a cool part of the world for sure.

      Thanks, I didn't cover it in the video, but there are several gold mines in the Rampart area that still turn out a decent amount of gold. Good luck prospecting out there.

    Thank you for the video. I thought about floating the river in a canoe. Are the empty houses for sale? I guess if everyone left there, there are good reasons to not live there.

      There were a few people canoeing the river while we were there. The village is in the process of expanding, the population was down to about a dozen 20 years ago, but has grown to more than 60, they have a new power grid, water wells and internet. They're building new houses, and trying to get a road built, currently a four wheeler trail. There was a house and shop for sale when we were there.

      @@alaskadudewithdogs98 thank you for taking the time to reply. It means more than you could know. I have looked for a place to buy in Alaska, but prices are too high for me. I bought a nice place in rural Kansas for a TINY fraction of the price of anything I could find in Alaska.

      @@davidpeightal4918 yeah the housing market up here is crazy. I only bought a place when the market collapsed after the 2008 crisis. Renting is even worse. Kansas is a little too flat for me, I need mountains.

    Aka the village Frank Murkowski wanted to build a road to. What a boondoggle that would have been.
    Is that drill rig always there in the Village or did you have to barge yours in?

    • @alaskadudewithdogs98
      @alaskadudewithdogs98  5 місяців тому

      We barged the rig in, but there's almost a road in. It's only 20 miles off the road system and there's a 4x4 trail to the village. A few of our crew drove in last winter with supplies and are planning to do it again in a couple weeks. It's only drivable when the ground is frozen.

    Are mosquitoes a big deal, in Rampart?

    • @alaskadudewithdogs98
      @alaskadudewithdogs98  10 місяців тому

      Not too bad, they're worse out on the tundra to the west and farther north. Ekwok out by Dillingham had horrible swarms of mosquitoes, nats, and fly's

    Were you in there just for pleasure or part of your job? Why I ask, you didn't show any fishing or things like that on the river.

      I was there for work, drilling water wells

      Right on, thanks. When it comes to the Yukon, I'm always interested as I lived there 75 to 77. Drove for White Pass Yukon Route. @@alaskadudewithdogs98
