I realise I'm a bit late to the party. I'm pretty certain that the song is about dying. There is a fair bit of general death imagery in the lyrics (the black beach, leaving the shore, all that jazz). Also, in the world of The Dark Eye, the afterlife of the Elves is "The Realm beneath the Waves". Bernhard Hennen, one of authors of the tie-in novel was involved in mapping out the concept of the album. He was the guy who came up with the lore about the elvish afterlife in the first place. On a totally unrelated note, the first three or four notes of the "sag mir wie es ist" motif reminds me strongly of a 1960s' song from East Germany. It's called "Sag mir wo Du stehst", "tell me where you stand" or "which side are you on". The two motifs take different turns afterwards, SaMo's song being in a minor, and the east german song being in a major key. But for a split second, I always expect the lyrics of the old song. I don't know whether that was intentional, or just a coincidence.
Laura (the blonde singer of Faun) has her own band called Tvinna. You should really check it out, recommend starting with "Two Staves". I can safely say you will not be expecting what you hear!
As for the Fantasy/RPG background of this song: This time, I really have no idea whatsoever, exept that the song is - like Finsterwacht - associated with an RPG campaign of the same name for the German RPG "The Dark Eye". I am a bit out of date considering the latest game-lore, but AFAIK, the real game-geeks are also not quite sure where to put it. (The campaign will be released in June, with the album, so maybe by then we will all be the wiser.) Should I hear or find out anything, I will let you know. 🙂

It's about death, I'd say. The realm of the dead of the elves in the setting of The Dark Eye is the "Realm beneath the Waves".
They should at least have given some credit to New Order song creators for stealing the better part of the song.
