I love Lady Envy way too much! She's so delightful! Her Seguleh team + Toc and Tool might my favorite MoI storyline....maybe...lol Also I'm here for my girl Korlat getting some love.
Ganoes Paran is my overall favourite character, I've loved him from his first to his last scene. I appreciate his growth and also his weakness, makes him the regular human trying to keep up with legends and magic and super powers and, mostly, people who want to manipulate him. Anyway don't get me wrong, I enjoyed listening to your top 10 and your reasons, I just wanted to show my Captain some unconditional love 😂
Better late than never! Also, it’s good to see you’re feeling better with that smooth voice of yours in full flight. Great to hear your thoughts on the characters!
Kruppe #1. Always. 😉 Ok, honestly Quick Ben is my top spot. But Kruppe is in my top 10. Because what you always seem to forget in your Lift comparison is Kruppe accomplishes things. Mayhaps by manipulating others into them. But he's at the center of why Darujistan doesn't fall. And again why the Alliance is formed. He draws together the means of preserving the Myhbe, and thereby allowing the Beast Hold to return. Is that luck? There's more than one kind of power in this world.
It's not that Kruppe isn't powerful, it's that he is annoying to have to read. His character is written in such a way that some people instantly dislike him, which I imagine is entirely intentional. On my re-reads I skip past his rambling, and get back to characters that are in some way interesting and entertaining.
@@Furniture121 And that's a shame, because Kruppe is a fantastic spin on the classic fop. The difference between persona and efficacy is what makes him unique. But then, I despise Kallor, and people tell me I should like him. So *shrug*
I see Ganoes Paran in much the same way as Toc, they are the "everyman" bumbling their way through a world of magic and legends. I have always liked him though, since he seems to grow the most, out of the main Malazan army characters. The others, like Whikeyjack are all legends in their time, so they don't grow, they just are.
I just finished Memories of Ice today. Personally I just want the last 7 books to be the Toc and Tool show personally, with special frequent appearances of Korlat and Gruntle. I am so for them. Lady Envy can show up to add that junior high school vibe a bit, but then back to Toc and Tool, (and Gareth.)
Wouldn't Rake have been late through no fault of his own? Didn't the Malazan's rush in without telling their allies? Remember they split up and one of the groups went in early which forced the other groups to rush in to catch up. This was what let Kallor have his moment if you'll remember.
Bold prediction: you will come to love Kruppe by the end of the series. SO many other things I want to say, but can't do it without spoilers, so I'll just say I'm enjoying the read along. Thanks for bringing so many people into this world with you.
Oh my God, another person referencing Stargate! I just finished memories of ice for the first time and I still have the notes from GotM that ascension seems a lot like it does in Stargate. Don't know how right I am but I felt lot of similarities.
Caladan Brood would have brought the hammer down to end the world if it wasn't for the howling wolves. Don't blame the Malazans, Rake was later than EVERYONE. He turned up when the war was already over and the Pannion was about to cut his deal with Quick Ben and Kilava.
@@nilanniruthan Cell reception is spotty at 20 fathoms and the Ravens aren't known for their swimming ability. Not to mention Moonspawn handles like, well, a big pile of rocks.
Envy is awesome as a trope just taken to an extreme level and is just over the top. I would have not been surprised if Ganoes would have whined 'but I have to go to Taschi and pick up some power converters' early on. But he does get better when his tummy ache goes away. An interesting observation on favorite characters in a each book or the whole series in general, is how much impact one can have in just a few pages.
I'd rate the Panion and The Crippled God for being great antagonists though we're only getting snippets of CG for now. My only issue with Panion is he gets a shot at redemption when he really shouldn't get one imo
@@meris8486 that was just a bonus - the real reason was Iktovians example... if you google Iktovian compassion quote you get the real reason... this theme is the main point of the entire series.
@@theriddler2277 It just doesn't sit right for me, I don't think Panion deserved compassion just death. They take him away from the Warren of Chaos and he's all "I don't feel so evil anymore" then it's revealed that his ice magic can help stall the bigger problem in the story of CG poisoning the world. How convenient. Panion is responsible for the death and torture of hundreds of thousands of people. I've some sympathy for him given the prologue, but I still think he should have been killed.
Speaking of villains you love to hate, one of the Esslemont novels, Blood and Bone, manages to have two of the worst assholes in the Malazan universe in it with Kallor and Skinner. That book really drives home how Kallor's mindset works. Were you planning on reading Esslemont's Malazan books?
i want to know the Caladan Brood/Kallor/Rake backstory too. I'm lukewarm on Ganoes, but I think he and Quick Ben together are fun, QB seems to know how to prod Ganoes to action. I love Itkovian and all the Grey Swords. I'd be interested when you reach the midpoint of the series if you did a 'sum up' video of top 10 so far; characters, scenes, maybe throw in some predictions, though i know you don't like to do that. I think by then you've met most of the main characters...
I’m gonna write you some fan fiction - Kruppe worldhops to Roshar and dates an older Lift and together they go on merry adventures. Might even start a gofundme for it… (Don’t ban me pls)
