I think we should remember, last year was Treling's first year, he was still trying to sort out the mess Dubas left behind. Going into his second season he looks to be doing the right things, fixing the defense and goal issues, plus the coaching change was overdue and a new voice should have a positive effect. The cap will take longer to sort out thanks to all the no move contracts Dubas handed out. I know Leaf fans are frustrated (i am too) with all the good season/lousy playoffs that has gone on for 8 seasons, but it looks like real change is coming, and thats way overdue, but a positive sign of better days ahead
I can't blame the current management team because they weren't here at the root of when these problems started. Dubas gave Matthews, Marner and Nylander too much power/money before they even earned it. They received more money than they were worth at the time and gave them no movement clauses when they didn't deserve it. I feel the draft picks that were used to acquire talent at the deadlines each year were underwhelming to say the least. And now the current regime has to clean up the mess that Dubas left. The Tavares deal was brutal because as great of a player he has been for us, he's not 11 million per year great and this is what has caused the depth scoring to suffer.
I've seen a story / clip, where Matthews, has stated... if things don't change, he'll consider leaving. Any truth to this? Have you guys heard anything or something to this effect?
I haven't been too impressed by the Leafs front office for nearly sixty years....give or take a few short stints. But geez 30th? At least the Leafs make the playoffs consistently. Leafs front office.....a middling grade.

Then they brought in rookie coach Keefe who wasn’t any good as he was out coached EVERY playoffs. When they lost to Montreal that was a huge sign this team was going downhill. Now they have these overpaid players and they still have Morgan Reilly who they’ve overpaid and he’s not even a top pair Dman yet they act like he is and that’s a joke. They should have built a better team from a top goalie game breaker and then defense and last the forwards. Who thinks the Leafs will get past round 1.

I would like to see Matthews focus on being more of a distributor and dominate defensively. Add a little more Patrice Bergeron to his game . If you have a centre that can score 50 and win a selke, that’s worth lot more than moderate defensive player that snipes 60-70. Matthews shows flashes of this last season.
Almost impossible for Canadian teams to compete in thus salary Cap era. Low tax State teams have a huge advantage and Canadian teams will never be able to sustain any type of high level. Florida teams for example have approx 20 million Cap advantage when you factor in NET INCOME. No chance for Canadian teams.

Morgan rielly is 30, probably starting to decline. Matthews is probably topped out at 60 and 100. What if he gets 45 and 75? Nylander may be at his peak.
I'm definitely not one of the ones who think this but you have to remember that many fans feel defensive D don't do anything and are slow and pointless. They don't understand defensive structure and don't want to. So when teams shore up their defence they think the team wasted money.

I think The LEAFS have gotten alot better on defense.
Can we just wait and see how the first two weeks go. When the season starts. Im happy with what the leafs management has done. Ppl just need to relax
