  • Astro Van won't start??? Are you sick of putting caps and rotors in your van? I have replaced the cap and rotor in my 100k mile Astro van THREE TIMES in the past 20k miles, & this is getting ridiculous. The symptoms will appear gradually; at a steady speed at light throttle, you will feel a slight stumble, and eventually, even though your van seems to run fine, it won't start. It will crank, and catch, and stumble, but NOT actually start. It will be acting like it's not getting fuel, but the reality is, it is not getting spark, and you are a victim of pancake distributor disease, or a distributor with slight wear on it's gear drive, causing the spark to be a couple degrees later than normal, which doesn't happen as clean, and eventually corrosion will cause it to stop working. This will often present itself when it's humid, like after a rain, or during the melting of a lot of snow.
    The fix? Watch the video to find out.

    Nicely done! I am hoping my new distributor also solves the moisture problem. I gets wet in Portland, Oregon. We shall see.

    The brass is 100% the right choice. I did the same on my 4.3L in my S-10 and once I made that switch it never gave me another problem.

      @@addvancedgarage Somewhat confused by that comment - I actually had this on my list for spring updates to my 98' LS. Are you saying Brass isn't necessarily the best choice - or that perhaps the brass being used in the replacement caps now is low quality?

      @@addvancedgarage Weird - I wonder if it is just an airflow difference on the van body. Mine was an 88 S-10 (Tahoe package/Extended cab) and I got at least 50k on my brass one and I know it was still in good condition when I sent the truck to the crusher.

      @@thisislandearth I’m saying replacing the cap and rotor is only a temporary fix if your distributor gear is worn and you have enough play. The spark will happen a bit late and the distance gets too large. Also tune up grease I’m hoping helps out

    SMART guy. One of the few guys that knows what dielectric grease is used for. NOT on electric contacts! It prevents electric flow. I know,,,,, "I use it on contacts and don't have a problem". Doesn't make it correct.

    Always good to see improvement videos on the Safari/Astro's. I did a LS swap on my '01 Safari AWD. Had to do a 3". in the process now putting in 4:10 gears in both the front and rear differentials so I do not lose any pulling power after putting on new 30" tires. What caught my eye on yours is the touch screen head drive unit. Was this in the van already or did you install it? If so can you share lessons learned etc?

    • @addvancedgarage
      @addvancedgarage  Рік тому +1

      I have everything filmed for the install, I'll try to get that edited in a few days, it's a pioneer unit, forget which model. LS sounds amazing with an AWD but from what I've been reading it's a giant PITA. What kind of mileage are you getting? I was planning to go vortec 5.7 since it seems like a lot less work.

    • @richardsilva5134

      @@addvancedgarage Lots of engine control management wiring. AWD scares most people away from it but was still doable and it actually looks OEM fit. I think I get close to 17+ combined MPG which is better than the Vortec, but I am not good at keeping my foot out of it lol

    people focus way tooo much dielectrics insulating properties. it doesn't take much to break through and make contact. i use it on rj45 / ethernet connectors. but, it would be to test a cap sometime and slathering it in on test stand/vehicle sometime
