As someone that did grow up with turn-based final fantasy games and still love them to this day I gotta say this one rocks. Also obligatory I'm in your walls.

100% AGREE FF16 has the best story and best characters and best voice acting in gaming. I was enthralled all the way thru.

3:00 Honestly exploring only comes into play to find and kill Hunt Marks, as well as some rare loot every now and then. Probably the biggest draw to explore is soaking in the gorgeous looks of the game. This place you're in is where a hunt mark appeares, but is only unlocked when you get to a certain point in the game.

Also there is a harder mode that is only unlocked through New Game +. The devs do want you to experiance the story first hand, and then go through it again with Final Fantasy Mode, which is probably one of the best hard modes, since it increases the level cap, adds new mechanics to boss fights and also swaps out mid dungeon bosses and mobs with harder ones you wouldn't see until later in the game.

I did find out about that area I was in later, it might have done me some good to talk about side quests and hunts a little more because the side quests add quite a bit to the world building
Also, I knew about Final Fantasy mode, but I had no idea it went that deep! Might have to dig into that soon!

@@imklubb not only that, but there’s also an extra difficulty mode called Ultimaniac mode. You access it only in Final Fantasy mode, and then in the Arcade mode within the Arete stone. It’s the stone you access for training and also getting high scores in Arcade mode. There’s no achievements attached to it. It’s literally just for high score and high difficulty junkies.

As good as FF16 is, I believe FF14 still has the best story is the franchise. It's not a fair contest because FF14 is 10 years in the making. And when story calls for a nostalgic moments, it was from literal years ago. And the antagonists in FF14 is perhaps the best in gaming history. They are who you sympathize and also may have agreed with. It forces you to questions your own very motives.

That'd honestly awesome! I wish I had the kind of time to sink into an MMO, but I just can never get around to it...

Playing thru this game as a member of a margainalized community and having almost every character in the game treat me like absolute shit with almost no catharsis to this beyond “they tolerate you sometimes because you’re useful” and “their hatred was bred into them so we need to have sympathy while they treat us like absolute shit.” the gameplay is amazing and the story has some great moments that I love but it’s very hard to engage or praise the story with this worldbuilding aspect so thoroughly unexplored.

For the most part, I think you're right. But I never felt like the game was telling me I needed to show sympathy towards how the jerks were treating me
Thankfully later in the game, I feel like they do go more deeper in the bearers and why they're treated the way they are. Theirs even a side quest late game that explains the origins of everyone animosity as well.
Regardless of your opinions on the game, I hope you enjoyed my video 😊

@@imklubb They do give the explinations, but I just found them lackluster. Or rather, it was too late for me to absorb and care? Like the third act L’ubor (spelling?) scenes made me facepalm so hard. Especially since subjugation, slavery, oppression, those are main themes in ARR, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, i’m sure other stories had it too but the same team was largely responsible and it just feels like they could have done better. I also understand that they weren’t setting out to make a friendly, warm, accepting universe either. They wanted conflict and strife and grittyness, which I appreciated at other times in the game moreso than others.
None of this makes me hate the game it just prevented me from engaging with it in the ways that I’m seeing a lot of people be able to. Not out to tear anything or anyone down. I just felt like the overall narrative was off to me and the world was not a place I really wanted to save. Except the Hideaway.

Damn, I really need to play through more of 14, you're the second person to mention it. I wish I had more time for MMOs cause Id love to dive into it
I love this though, it's nice to see a difference in opinion on this, especially if I can get a similar experience with a FF game. My plan is to cover all the FF games in the future.... We'll see how that goes 😅

Think that might be something I need to talk about in the future

With a lot of the Final Fantasy series changing from moment to moment I actually feel kinda bad for a lot of the older fans. That being said I'm not much of a turnbased RPG guy and I feel like I've been more drawn to play the newer games as of late or the FF7 Remake because they feel more accessable, so I feel a little split. Should games be sacrificing more of their core identity to appeal to a wider audience? Or should the games remain static, appealing to certain groups of people. It's been a question as old as gaming began. At the end the day I think that change is good, but I also believe that games shouldn't always be made more accessable for the sake of it. Videogames are meant for anyone, but not all videogames are meant for everyone, if that makes sense. Just because we're gamers doesn't mean we need to enjoy every game, we all have our preferences and thankfully there's a lot of games we can pick and choose from the genres we love. So I don't believe that series like these need to be forced into certain genres or subject to changes like this because we're invading the space of those who used to enjoy the series for what it was.
Anyways that was just a thought crunch. By no means is this a knock on Final Fantasy or series that have gone through major changes as of late because from what i've seen FF16 is good, but it is something to chew on. If there are books in movies that arn't made for everyone why does every videogame have to appeal to everyone? Anyways I should probably go start playing the FF7 Remake now.

Dude, well said! "Video games are meant for anyone, but not all Video games are meant for everyone"! I'm gonna have to use that some day!
Honestly, sometime in the near future I want to start talking about stuff like this, video essay style

This has got to be the most torn I've ever been about a game. I genuinely enjoyed the game, was incredibly hyped as someone coming from XIV but it sort of fizzles out midway for me. It's a great gaming story, that's for sure, but as FF it fails to do the "ever grander" way of storytelling of its predecessors. After second time skip everything falls into place, there are things to do, goals to achieve and... it happens. There's very few setbacks or surprises along the way. The entire political aspect of the story completely falls apart post-Titan as there's nothing to track politically, there are no political factions left. And that's the thing, political aspect is relevant from second time skip... until Titan, incredibly short amount of time.
As with the handholding regarding combat difficulty, story seems to be handholding to a certain degree as I see it having a huge amount of prologues, not just the Phoenix Gate, but everything until second time skip functions as worldbuilding and prologue. At which point most of the mystery is revealed. FF thrives on surprises and twists. This just... fails in that department. Imagine fighting Ultima on Waloed and actually defeating him for good, only to have the big bad, the one behind Blight and the fall of Fallen come forth and summon Origin. Now that's what this game sorely needs as finale. There are too many unsolved plotlines for a game without an announced sequel and DLC isn't gonna cut it. And as usual with FF endings, they do not support sequels succesfully, like EVER. This is not the ending that supports a sequel in any way yet leaves plotlines unfinished.
