Hence, the price will be converted to around 80,000$ after the car reaches the US market. I cannot see this getting to market. BTW, I owned a 93 ttrx7. I needed a tailwind to get 14 MPG! It can only be efficient in a very narrow rev. range even today in I believe. May make sense if it runs a generator it is way too inefficient to run the rear wheels.

Pop up headlights would be nearly impossible due to pedestrian safety regulations. They'd have to do what I did for my friend and design a smooth sleeve that pops up over the headlights. I designed it in autoCad and sent it to a friend who used the design on a chevy prototype he was part of the design squad for. The engineers loved it, but the company heads in charge of the c8 corvette said it would be impossible to do at a production scale due to the complexity of the vacuum formed pop up covers and how the electric motor would have to pivot to allow them to move freely. There's a concept drawing of the c8 that had my pop ups. Neither of us work in the automotive design field any more because the companies only take shit ideas. @@speedrider0101 Having driven both, I can say no it doesn't (not even close). The RX8 had uncomfortable amounts of chassis twist in the first gen that made the car unstable feeling when cornering in spirited driving. Although that was supposedly fixed later. The RX7 (255bhp) had more bhp than the RX8 (232bhp). No disrespect, but did you drive, own or research either car before you made your statement or did you base it off what you heard in video games?

@@blutygergaming8789 You misspelled the phrase "I disagree." It was at a dealer when I drove the first gen. Btw I track too, the first gen had uncomfortable chassis twist for me. After 22 years of SCCA and EMRA events I'm well versed in feeling out a chassis and suspension. If the first gen had a strut bar or chassis brace added then it was not as bad. The 2nd gen was far improved over the first because Mazda did srength the chassis from what I read to address that issue from market feedback. Btw if you track your car, you probably put some kind of chassis or suspension brace which greatly changes any car's behavior so lets not pretend as though you're tracking a stock RX8.
The proportions of the car look spot on. The head-on look is the best angle, but I wish the the lines around the side glass were a bit crisper rather than continuously turning.

They burned oil by design, there was a dedicated pump to supply oil to the combustion chambers. Who cares if they burned oil anyway? The gt350 mustangs go through a quart every 1k miles and you don't see people crying about those.
Power density and fun. They make a lot of power for their size and weight. Rotary engines also need to be wrung out to high rpm to use the power and clean the carbon buildup.

I'd prefer the mazda logo on the rear of the car. And maybe add 'mazda' in the bottom right corner of the trunk/bumper...? Another personal acknowledgement: I absolutely LOVE how the hood dramatically just disappears behind the front fender arches. Very functional and aesthetically pleasing. When I look at this car I see inspirations from Lotus and Ferrari. Makes me happy to see the growth Mazda has had in the States over the past couple of decades now.
I adore the Iconic SP. Absolutely sexy. I would like to see as few changes as possible for a production version. I don't want them to call it RX-7. You can reuse names, like Supra, for a reimagining, but not numbers (unless it's an evolution). It should be called RX-9, or something even more imaginitive. Pop-up headlights need a comeback. They're fun, and people miss them.
I sadly will (likely) never be in the market for a car like this. But man would I love to see people enjoying cars like these. Maybe this could additionally makes its way into a family sedan or wagon? One could only hope.
YES! BRING BACK POP-UP HEADLIGHTS!!!! I really love the AWD electric/motor hybrid idea, as that is exactly my end goals for my BRZ using the ORBIS wheel hubs. I hate all electric cars, but I believe hybrid is the way. I don't need long distance for the electric part. 30 mile range would be great for around town, as I usually drive only about 4-5 miles a day where I live. Then to have traditional gas powered engine to be able to go long distances. Which in Texas, are really long distances. lol Keep the car in neutral, and drive on the eclectic front, then engage the engine when the batteries discharge, or for extra power. Also being able to shut off/disengage the front motors, and go full RWD would be great for some hooning fun.
If they build the RX-7 or RX-9, I hope they use a traditional large-size round, red-colored analog gauge and the RX-7 names instead of MAZDA in the rear end. Make Wing's open door, like Lambo and MaLaren, that others don't dare to do. Be different and extraordinary if they want to sell a sports car.
This car is at the very top of my desirability list for new vehicles. This. Not an SUV. Take note manufacturers. This is what is actually desirable. Midlife crises everywhere are saved thank you Mazda for this. Please do not axe those flip up lights. Please keep it in the final product.
If this car comes out like this, I'd do my best to get one. Regardless of what effort I had to make, it just looks out of this world! Mazda has an opportunity here to make it the best revival of them all, let's see it done!
My 1994 RX7 weighs about 2800 pounds with about 255 horsepower and it's a really fun car. My only complaints are lack of cargo space and emissions, it's pretty smelly compared to modern cars. A new RX7 weighing 3000 pounds with 350 hp would be great, especially if it does include front motors for regen and torque vectoring. Personally I would like to see some sort of plugin hybrid so I can drive 5 or 10 miles without needing to burn any gasoline, and I don't mind the idea of using the rotary as a range extender without it being connected to the wheels. But I agree with the others who said they aren't getting their hopes up until we can actually buy one.
It really looks like an evolution of the third generation RX-7 utilizing the Kodo design parameters. It looks like a Mazda. My dream would be a sub $50k 300-400hp RX-7, better yet, a sub $40k with 300hp that weighs under 3,000 lb. I know that would compete with the MX-5 and won’t market,‘it’ll have to go up market from the MX-5, but the RX-7 was always an affordable sports car, costing less than Corvettes and lower end German sports cars, while being sharper edged and lighter than competing Japanese sports cars. There is space for that in the market. And my goodness I’d love to see it have a manual transmission.
Wankel displacement works a bit different than on a regular piston engine. It's not just 1.66 liter, due to a different combustion cycle. The workable volume is twice that, so about 3.2 liters.
I actually like the idea of a hybrid 2 rotor setup. Instant tq from the eletric motor and the high rpm from the 2 rotor; best of both worlds. Obviously a turbo new design 3 rotor engine would have been better but can't have everything. 😊
honda and toyota used to pair hybrid vehicles to manuals all the time in the early days of mass market hybrids, the most recent example i can think of is the honda cr-z which is an incredible and hugely overlooked cool car
We absolutely do not want a hybrid rx7...we want a rotary....if it cannot be done because of emissions standards then forget about the whole thing...and just continue manufacturing parts for the old rx7 and rx8, and we promise to keep these cars alive.
I have a suggestion for Mazda. Make the normal versions the same engine in the Miata but turbo charged from factory with an iron block the other version could be a traditional Rotary but make it very apparent the risk and maintenance for it and have people sign for it knowing the disclaimers. Allow it to run the same transmission from the Miata as well so parts are interchangeable. You need a sports car that’s solid other then the Miata this is how I’d assume it would pan out
Cool! I'd prefer a simple series hybrid with a motor for each wheel for torque vectoring and no transmission or drive shaft, but this still looks great!
I’ve had a 79 FB, 2 93 FDs and currently still have a 2007 RX-8. As much as I have enjoyed rotaries, the main appeal of these cars have been the overall balance. The rotary has been a big part of them, but I’d take a great sports car a little beefier than and MX-5 even without a rotary.
Don't be dismayed by good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends.
I love these name plates are returning. I do feel RX 9 would be well excepted as long as it's closer to its roots than the RX 8. With the mx 5 in the line up, I could see 44995 as a starting place. It is sad that it can't just be a tuners dream car though, it sounds super tech heavy.
The Mazda name on the back looks good to me, it compliments the width of the rear nicely. Speaking of the rear they made it look worse in the final version, the concept looks like it does butt day at the gym but the final version looks like it skips that workout entirely.
I worry that they will get this wrong if they do go ahead with it, if they are to make a 4th generation rx7 it needs to be light, RWD only and manual. I'm not sure the 1.6 even with the motors would cut it if it's meant to be a competitor with the likes of the Supra and Nissan Z. If this is an RX9 however, it would make more sense to make it a higher end car with the assist motors etc but then it need to be able to put out at least 400HP so I don't see why they can't do a 3 rotor hybrid since it's unlikely they will use a turbo setup.
RX-9 would be more logical.

@@miketwotwentyme personally, the front of the rx vision screams to much KODO design and is not fluent enough to fit the rear. The pop-ups with the more rx-7 style rear would be a new interpretation of the fd.
But in the end I hope they just put out something 😃
Mazda has had an AWD sports car: the Group A rallying homologation special 323 GTX.
Mazdaspeed 6 was also awd
^^ I came here to say that, I always wanted one but the new Ford SHO came out.
I'm sorry guys but my fd still has my heart. Timeless beauty.
I still track mine every single weekend. In Gran Turismo
I'm so jealous
Same here with my FC GTUs.
I had an 81 RX-7 in my early 20’s. I have had every retro muscle car since then. I still loved the RX-7 and that high revving wankle rotary engine along with the handling. So much fun to drive. I would love to see it make a comeback. The rotary engine is so different
But when the world needed it most, it returned.
Thats until the fire nation attacked
@@FiendishlyDelightedSefto til the electric nation attacked 💀
I've watched this video a few times now, I keep coming back to it as this car intrigues me. If they build it I think I'll want it. 1350kg, 300bhp ish, 3 motors, 2 rotors and even the possibility of a manual gearbox (but I'm doubtful they would make that setup work with a manual).
I want it to be fast and sporty, obviously the lower the price the better but I don't mind it being as expensive as the supra if it gives equal if not better performance
By far the best automotive channel out there, the most technical, the most honest, the most accurate. ♥️
as long as it has a 6 speed manual transmission i'm in!
frl and rwd 🤝🤝
I don’t even care if this has a rotary or not (or if it’s an RX7 or RX7 or some similar name). I just love what Mazda is doing and I love my Mazda I have now. They could put in their V6 turbo or even be a hybrid and I would still like this car; it just looks so good in my opinion. The front reminds me of the old Ford GT90 concept car from the 90s(?), I just love it so much.
I had a 93 gen 3 twin turbo rx7 and if they make this ,I'm definitely getting one... i just hope its not a hybrid
I going to guess it’s mostly electric with rotary to recharge it.
It's not hybrid it's EV and should not carry the rx7 badge
One of the Japanese articles states that the starting price for the new model of RX-9 will be around 8,000,000JPY for Japan. Hence, the price will be converted to around 80,000$ after the car reaches the US market.
Everyone needs to keep in mind that Mazda wants to move into a more luxury sector(information that I got from local dealers in Japan). Don't expect this car to be cheap. I wouldn't be surprised to see the price tag of 90,000$ ~ 100,000$ on the US market with all the premium options and the maximum spec.
I'm cleaning out room next to my FB as I watch this..
It should be called RX-9
Mazdaspeed6 was AWD, if you consider that a Mazda sports car
I had one. I definitely don’t.
@@pushsliceput a tune + bigger turbo on it and it’s a beast.
@@caniborrowapencil5160
Mine was tuned. that indeed added power to the wheels. that adds 0% to convert it into a sports car, however.
Gaming the suspension helped a little bit, but at the end of the day , it’s still a front-heavy, FWD-biased, understeering , uhh…”beast”.
@@pushslice But what do you want from a Mazda ‘sports car’? You could buy a rotary and get max 100k before the engine blows and spend 10x the money to buy it (say an rx-7) and keep it running or a non-turbo mx-5 for the cornering that you can barely tune up at all. I know you can get stock turbo mx-5 but they’re rare af.
I thought the Mazdaspeed 6 had decent handling for it being 4door sedan and on the straight with a good tune it’s faster and cheaper than mostly anything put out by Mazda that isn’t rotary. If you care about cornering so much buy an mx-5 but the speed6 will still smoke it on the straight.
@@caniborrowapencil5160
Yes .
My current (2nd) rotary is my track car , and I’m now on my second MX5 (they’ve see the track too).
They are wonderful to drive , and further , the chassis feedback /balance have allowed me to become a better driver over the years. I give them the right mods to make them optimized driving tools, but the mods don’t drive the car… the driver does. and these cars make the driver better.
Also, don’t get me wrong the MS6 is not a bad car ; I am just pointing out its characteristics. The MS has been replaced by Audis and BMWs, which are also not sports cars, although they too certainly “ have performance”.
Just picked up a 2024 Club BBR Softop 6 hours ago. It's pure bliss.
Mazda has some of the best chassis/driving cars. Looking forward to this RX
making a rx9 with no 6 speed manual would be such a missed opportunity
WOW, EV motor might fix the cold start of the rotary engine.
Been done with diesel generators for a long time. Air start
If it uses the rotary as a main power ICE and a manual transmission i will gladly buy it. They are Japan's premier sports car builder so i know it will be a well engineered, well handling car.
I cannot see this getting to market. BTW, I owned a 93 ttrx7. I needed a tailwind to get 14 MPG! It can only be efficient in a very narrow rev. range even today in I believe. May make sense if it runs a generator it is way too inefficient to run the rear wheels.
Add a Mazda 6
With inline 6 or better yet a Coupe 6 with the inline 6.
I hope it gets the swan doors. I love that feature. Low sports cars need it. Nothing worse than curbing your door on a high curb during a date or when taking a friend about in your sports car.
Car will be RX-9, and engine is direct injected larger version of RX-8 at 1.6, formerly code name 16X. RX-8 1.3L made 230HP, 1.6L DI will make 300HP, and motors at 50HP with mostly torque to save gas in city, and ll boost the power more than battery can provide, not just exten range. Opposite of hybrid super cars that use electric battery to provide short boost.
Why do you think it will be called RX-9?
@@themazdamanpoweredbymazmar2985 why not? Seen any maker go back on their numbers? Nissan didn't have 300Z. They just called it Z.
@@Soravia The name RX-7 is iconic, like Corvette or Supra. It is significant! An RX-8 is not a continuation in a series other than having a rotary engine. We’ve had three generations of RX-7s so far and it’s time for a fourth.
@@themazdamanpoweredbymazmar2985 You had RX2's, 3's, 4's, an 5's with all of them being a different style of sporty car powered by a rotary engine. I would make sense to call this the RX-9 as this would be the first Rotary Hybrid Sports car. Hell they could end up calling it the Cosmo (maybe Cosmo SP or Cosmo RX) for all we know.
Just wanted to say I appreciate your videos, especially automotive news.
I can't stop looking at the design of this car. It's sleek and luxurious yet sporty too! I love Mazda's designs
Kirk I love how particular you are when critiquing car design, I'm the same way and I feel like too many people slide that stuff under the rug. You're a man of culture
They should just make more FD RX-7s
This is really exciting! I love the first gen RX-7's! I learned to drive in my mom's 79' and 85' first gens and I had an 84' myself years later that I had to sell before moving to Canada.
That’s awesome if they bring that car back, one problem, the amount of motors you said this thing is gonna have sounds like a 60thousand dollar car in this current market
Thats same as the price of the rx7 in the 80s adjusted for inflation
Stunning design by Mazda. A great modern interpretation of the classic with some twist and a jdm sports car we all need.
I’m so hyped on the can rn
Looks nice but I think what would have been a lot more fun is taking the FC and doing something similar to the Hyundai N Vision - a 3-rotor engine with an electric motor. I agree, Kirk - I think 350ps is a lofty estimate for a naturally aspirated twin-rotor.
Yes, RX-9, so couldn’t be a 7 !
This is one of the most in depth videos on this vehicle. Thanks for your work! Saving up for it now 😂 seriously tho 🤞

Anything good they throw out immediately
Did they fix the apex seal issue?
Yes
The RX8 never felt like a proper successor the RX7. Where as this looks like a direct descendant. Props to Mazda for getting this one right.
But the Rx8 feels way more comfortable and sporty on the road than any Rx7, plus it has more hp for an NA car and higher rpm
@@speedrider0101 Having driven both, I can say no it doesn't (not even close). The RX8 had uncomfortable amounts of chassis twist in the first gen that made the car unstable feeling when cornering in spirited driving. Although that was supposedly fixed later. It never felt as sporty as the RX7, especially considering the layout with the odd half backseat door. The RX7 interior was far more performance and driver focused. The RX7 (255bhp) had more bhp than the RX8 (232bhp).
No disrespect, but did you drive, own or research either car before you made your statement or did you base it off what you heard in video games?
@@speedrider0101 Rx8 felt like a mazda 6 which is a compliment to the mazda 6 imo. Brakes, steering and interior feel felt very related.
@@KaDuWinYou’re definitely wrong. Did you drive a rust belt 8 or did it have ruined subframe bushings or something? I own an 8 and have driven an FC and FD on two tracks, and the 8 is slightly more forgiving in corners. I track my 8 multiple weekends a month and every test driver and ride I give, people have glowing praise for the handling. The only modifications it has currently are braking and safety improvements, and reliability mods, such as a sohn adapter and a de-cat.
Mazda should just put a image of a rotary engine in the front entertainment screen and drop an inline 6 in the hood!
I drove a friend's Series 2 RX-7 back in the early 80's. Coming off my Lotus Europa, l remember saying that the Gen 2 RX was the closest thing to the Europa's handling that you could afford to buy at that time. If this development happens, l'll be watching closely.
With a Hybrid set up, I wonder if they could push 400+ hp out of the wankel.
The hybrid doesn’t work well with the renesis to start, both msp engines so I doubt it
so it r100 rx2 rx3 rx4 rx5 rx6 rx7 rx8 and then back to rx7 makes perfect sense
Make it RX9, leave the RX7 legacy be.
Who else needs to see a 2025 mazda rx8???? I really wait for that.
Please mazda, please
As someone who has owned 4 RX7s and is financially capable of purchasing one of these if they come out: if the engine doesnt drive the wheels directly im not interested.
A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.

Thanks the latest iconic coverage!
Kirk, The car looks great but as I recall, these Mazda rotary engines burned massive amounts of oil. I can't understand what the fuss is all about. 🤔
Apex seals…
They burned oil by design, there was a dedicated pump to supply oil to the combustion chambers. Who cares if they burned oil anyway? The gt350 mustangs go through a quart every 1k miles and you don't see people crying about those.
Power density and fun. They make a lot of power for their size and weight. Rotary engines also need to be wrung out to high rpm to use the power and clean the carbon buildup.
If an engine does not burn oil, it aint no fun!
Burning oil makes it very hard to meet emission standards.@@abracing199
400hp at 45k sounds sweet. dont pull the bs with option in get close to 60k like most - a deal killer.
has to be less than the Supra to be "available" to all
Wow that’s beautiful. It reminds me of a cyberpunk aesthetic, I need it. Genuinely makes me happy just to look at this car.
Nice still has some shape from old rx7.. the lines for the top of the vehicle are just adjusted a little though the bottom half is completely different..looks great❤
I'd prefer the mazda logo on the rear of the car.
The foot feels the foot when it feels the ground.
Opportunity often comes disguised in the form of misfortune, or temporary defeat.
11:32 250 hp seems pretty low. The 1.3L RX-8 output 238hp back in 2004.
Yeah, 250hp is low. But if the car is light enough it may put out better power to weigh ratio still low tho
It really just looks like an nd3 with a rotary. Don’t get me wrong though, this thing is BEAUTIFUL
That shape. Wow.
2:00 Mazda typed out like that looks clean, speak, and premium.
It has my vote.
Great coverage, also a quick note, looks like that front side badge is a nod to the rotary engine with it's shape.
The car on the cover looked unbelievably beautiful
Hopefully this car will come with a manual transmission option and won't be a hybrid. I dont want a rotary if its just designated to generator duty
Rotary is just too unreliable past 100k as cool as they are.
honestly, it would be really cool if we could have this with a choice of the PHEV/rotary and the straight six they made for the cx-70/90
Mazda easily has one of the top 5 logos imo-- I would really hope we see the badge on the back.
They just filed a patent for a worse new one 😅
They should use the Efini logo
I’d love to see a good RX car come back like a couple others. Would they call it the RX7 or RX9? I’m sold either way
The Mazda name on the back looks good to me, it compliments the width of the rear nicely. Speaking of the rear they made it look worse in the final version, the concept looks like it does butt day at the gym but the final version looks like it skips that workout entirely.
I don't care what kind of rotary and what kind of transmission it gets, I'm just glad it exists
