Recorded live at the Prinsengrachtconcert 2007 (August), Amsterdam by the AVRO.
Absolutely wonderful! I didn’t think anyone could surpass Mario Lanza singing this beautiful Cole Porter song!
I think that Thomas Hampson is one of the few full blown operatic voices that CAN do justice to Cole Porter's songs!
Hampson is one of the greatest baritones alive today. His unobtrusive approach to the musical statements he sings makes it easy to appreciate and respect his musicianship.
This is one of my most favorite pieces of music. I could listen to it over and over again. Beautifully sung.

It was meher baba’s favorite song. He had it played immediately upon his dropping of the body. He said it was the greatest song of man’s love for god.

Begin the Beguine is my favorite song, by my favorite composer, Cole Porter. I have heard many, many versions of this song, and this particular version is the second best I've ever heard. It is a difficult and very long song to sing, and this singer is very good. BTW - the very best version of Begin the Beguine is in the movie "Night and Day" starring Cary Grant. It is sung in that movie by the fabulous Carlos Rameriz, who is Columbian. If you are a fan of Begin the Beguine see that movie !!

I want to make a big apology , I know operatic singing because my wife sang "Marriage of Figero", at her age of 30 with a new baby, she sang Susanana , 464 pages memorized, watching all as i know, Hampson an unbealivable baratone, and the song is a Cole Porter perfection. Gives me a .........at 75 just goose bumps....hehehe love this

I love Cole Porter stuff, especially Begin The Beguine. Thomas Hampson does a beautiful job on this piece. I am in complete agreemen with dogman regarding Porter's preference of singing style to his music. I think I'll listen again. a fun ending too.....no one was expecting that, I don't think.

63, so true. I good example would be Bizet whose Carmen bombed at the premiere. He interduced the great opera to a family audience and the critics lampooned and ridiculed it. He died two months later of a broken heart.
