Elisa Lam, a 21-year-old Canadian student at the University of British Columbia, was found dead in a water tank on the roof of the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles on February 19, 2013.
Elisa Lam was traveling alone through California and checked into the Cecil Hotel on January 28, 2013. She was supposed to go home on February 1 but failed to contact her parents that day, prompting them to report her missing. Elisa Lam was last seen on Jan. 31 on the hotel's elevator surveillance camera. The footage showed her behaving abnormally.
Some speculated that she was on drugs or that someone was stalking her. However, toxicology reports found no trace of narcotics, and only prescription drugs she used for bipolar disorder had been ingested. The Los Angeles coroner ruled her death an accidental drowning, and an autopsy found no signs of physical trauma or sexual abuse.
Despite the coroner's conclusion, several problems remain before the world. The doors and stairs leading to the roof of that hotel were locked, so how did Elisa Lam gain access to the roof and enter the tank? If she did, how did she open the security lock?
