Tom Violence is one of the best album openers ive ever heard
Oh yes! When I bought the album, back in 1987 as a 16 yo, became hooked by TV and the following two songs. I couldn't take the record out of the plate! EVOL is the record of my life!
Daydream nation is a landmark, but this record is one of may all time favorites. I can still remember the rain and clouds outside my window when this record began. I still play it on rainy days.
Dude this is the most underrated sonic album.
early sonic youth is the best not a fan of anything after daydream nation
@@thecapricorn11 I personnally think that SY ar good until Washing Machine. After that, I feel a bit far from what they released out.
@@TheTheolm daydream nation is my favorite
this and bad moon rising
@@vibez998 I never got into that one
"Met a stranger on a train........" As a teen riding the subway this changed my life 16 years ago.
For the better, I hope...
great Hitchcock homage
wow... that breakdown in Tom Violence is something else...
Sonic Youth for me completely up-ended the whole linear narrative of rock music that I'd been taught. I was hearing shit like this made in the 80's that sounded like what I had been taught the '90's sounded like. Then I discovered shit like shoegaze and the Dunedin Sound that didn't fit into any traditionally accepted era of pop culture. SY is one of the few bands that I'd genuinely say if they were formed today they would be just as cool, maybe even more popular.
Probably not, but it doesn't matter at all.
Absolutely agree, SY like whenever.
I got into post-punk, punk, and alternative as a high schooler in the mid-2000s, and this was in heavy rotation - I'd say it's the best of the three masterpieces they released at the end of the 80s. If this is your first listen, welcome to the club.
im 17 and i just got a walkman from a colleague of mine, after i got it my dad gave me around 30 old cassets that he listened to when he was younger, but i wanted to get one myself aswell. i went to a library nd asked about cassetes and there were only 4. This album was one of them, i bought it even tho i didnt know the band and i dont regret at all. Best 25 euros that i spent last year.
I always said this is one of their best albums...Perfect from start to finish...
one of those classic albums where EVERY SONG IS AMAZING, my favorite Sonic Youth album! Bongwater's "Double bummer", Butthole Surfers "Live PCPPEP," Psychic TV's "Dreams less sweet", the Descendants "all", Firehose " Ragin' full on", everything by Fugazi or Ian Mackaye,.. the list could go on and on and on... god 80"s music was so good.
Hell yeah. Love this album. And I like your list. And also Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime.
Don't forget Big Black!! And Black Flag...yeah, I got a 'thing' for 'black music'...(this was considered the worst 'joke' in all youtube'!!)
For absolute sure, Minute men, and anything Steve Albini did, as well as Henry Rollins. 80's spawned a lot of great record labels, SST, Homestead, Discord, shimmy-disk, etc. and they all have great catalogs.
@@archangelanglea Replacements, late Clash, The The
As usual, Lee's tune is the best. "Words crumble around me and fall with the weight of heaven, I cannot move"
Well, you know, they're all the best. But that one is the most thought provoking to me
I have this album on cassette. A greatly missed band. 😞
The end of the No-Wave era... and the beginning of the Noise-Pop style... In any case, the SONIC DREAM continues... 🤖👽
Oh it willnever be forgotten. Me and you won't forget that
@Terminator X well said my friend... many 100% black metal fanatics like me get the blues, because black metal Is a great, deep and absolutely serious music genre... 🤘🤘🤘
sonic youth sounded to me a glenn branca knockoff until this album, the first to have memorable melodic songs.
@@jimrader5299 I love all the Sonics have done from the debut EP until the NYC Ghost & Flowers album... 20 years of pure dope and magik
This was the album that got me to start up a band.
This album really got my creativity to come out.....miss those years.
One of the best albums ever.
Gives me chills just seeing the cover again. Then listening to it. I miss this stuff.
Tremendous album......still great after all this years from its first release!!!!!
Heck yeah!!....and ME!...don't forget me!...I'm cool too! 😉 ua-cam.com/video/27A2-VugeOM/v-deo.html

The album that introduced me to Sonic Youth, clear memories, instant photography, incredible.
First sonic album I listened to. Still my favourite
Last Sonic Youth album I listened to and my favorite it used to be hard to find in the 90s

This is a full body massage / psychic stretch when you live inside a tesseract and need to reintegrate your experiences within the whole.

As i type thids message, my thoughts take me to a live performance and TM gave me a pen & a rare chance of writing something on his marilyn pants
I miss you, i miss you.
Probably my most heard SY Album of all time. Obne of my favorites. Daydream Nation and Goo are probably the 2 best albums but this is the 3rd, definitely!
this album is way better than daydream nation. the cover is cooler too.
Both cool and equally worthy. Context man. Dig.
I don't think it's way better but it sure is cool.
Agreed!
This cover rox.....Celeste kinda rox too ☺️ua-cam.com/video/27A2-VugeOM/v-deo.html
Sister beats DDN tho
What a difference the new drummer made
Can conduct smoothly and almost unnoticably during playback time anything plugged or attacbed into the Android device. SO DYNAMIC, just like TM playing guitar in sometimes awkward posture & position!
It's not Total Trash and I love it.

intro to 'bubblegum' swiped from TV's version of "fire engine'./ not a fan, but this is a good album, their first successful mesh of pop n noise.
What date in May was this released? Can't find that info anywhere!
Ik I checked too can’t find it, why is the release date so hard to find?
May 2, 1986... SST label, USA
SST did SY dirty (no pun intended)
is there anything cooler than thurston's voice on in the kingdom #19
Its lee actually. I believe the first song he provided vocals for.
@@Jack_nnn_ that is his first lead vocal, he actually sang backup on a much older song, I Dreamed I Dream from the first EP.
@@leviyule2397 i dreamed i dream is one of the most underrated SY tracks of all times
Reminded me of Michael Stipe at points, tbh.
Best spoken word song ever

Hi mother
The REAL Hendrix Sonic Experience is the end of this Vinyl. My friend showed me at the end of the vinyl the needle never picks up ..the never ending sonic experience by Thurston on this Vinyl..OH he also told me EVOL spells LOVE..ITs LOVE..RIght KIM?
This should have been a worldwide hit. It wasn't. They tried different formulas but they didn't work either. This is the one that should have worked.
I'm not so sure about that. It's too cryptic, too idiosyncratic. Too good in short. :) IMHO they came closest with Washing Machine. Goo and Rather Ripped were good bids too. Even DDN in another way, although I really don't like it. But the true missed opportunity may have been Dirty. After DDN and Goo the time was ripe for them, but the album was sub-par and the choice of singles was very odd. Sugar Kane should have been the first single.
nope....this album is not mainstream and accessable enough...still too weird and unusual...but after a while, word of mouth and cool vids made them famous regardless
carved suck for honesty on my chest
Surprised by all the Daydream Nation stans in the comment section. I really don't get the hype. For every change in their style made in Daydream Nation, Goo did it better. Pre-Daydream Nation is their best era anyway.

Does anyone else feel like s.y. were a huge leap for music? They seem arrogant but i see why
They represent an absolute evolution of the guitar playing and rock...they are exactly what we honk they are..........also......Celeste rox😊 ua-cam.com/video/h_g8X0q5cyM/v-deo.html
popular music, for sure. they incorporated decades of avantgardism into a pop format
College was better when this came out.
Pre grunge
antes de nirvana era esto y era mejor
They finally learned how to not sound like complete aliens from a different planet with this album...and it only took 3 tries...LOL....good job guys...it's called mainstream success...it's something you may enjoy if you give it a chance
Fuck you.
What's wrong with sounding like from a different planet, a good goal of you ask me

Star power is like a turd that doesn't flush.
Some cool guitar in that one though
