Sonic Youth for me completely up-ended the whole linear narrative of rock music that I'd been taught. I was hearing shit like this made in the 80's that sounded like what I had been taught the '90's sounded like. Then I discovered shit like shoegaze and the Dunedin Sound that didn't fit into any traditionally accepted era of pop culture. SY is one of the few bands that I'd genuinely say if they were formed today they would be just as cool, maybe even more popular.

I got into post-punk, punk, and alternative as a high schooler in the mid-2000s, and this was in heavy rotation - I'd say it's the best of the three masterpieces they released at the end of the 80s. If this is your first listen, welcome to the club.

im 17 and i just got a walkman from a colleague of mine, after i got it my dad gave me around 30 old cassets that he listened to when he was younger, but i wanted to get one myself aswell. i went to a library nd asked about cassetes and there were only 4. This album was one of them, i bought it even tho i didnt know the band and i dont regret at all. Best 25 euros that i spent last year.

Bongwater's "Double bummer", Butthole Surfers "Live PCPPEP," Psychic TV's "Dreams less sweet", the Descendants "all", Firehose " Ragin' full on", everything by Fugazi or Ian Mackaye,.. the list could go on and on and on... god 80"s music was so good.

    In days of yore
    When the boredom
    Hadn't set in
Back to the land of the ice and the slush
    Girl power lunches
    Served 24 24 hours a day
    In a daydream nation
    Crasheteria
    Knowave averages six feet under
Six dick stalker on the rise
    Forget your moody
    Bloomers
    Forget about that bad moon
    I'm in a bad mood
Don't wanna go to the city
    Don't wanna see the Ramones
    Don't wanna get dressed
    Don't assume
    Don't sniff

It helps with the moody blues
    And with bad moons
Gabba gabba exceptionalism has left me broke
    Gonna rob a bank
    Need some scratch
    Unwanted advances
    Backstage passes
You want all access with me
    You wanna be seventeen
    I'm neil young jail bait
    In my sonic youth today

I'm not so sure about that. It's too cryptic, too idiosyncratic. Too good in short. :) IMHO they came closest with Washing Machine. Goo and Rather Ripped were good bids too. Even DDN in another way, although I really don't like it. But the true missed opportunity may have been Dirty. After DDN and Goo the time was ripe for them, but the album was sub-par and the choice of singles was very odd. Sugar Kane should have been the first single.
