This was before he was officially kicked out too. I mean they basically had but Syd didn't know at first he was kicked out. Dated February 20th 1968, Syd was only known to play with them in January but they'd only just in February, like a week before this to not pick him up for a gig.
Man, the comments are so way off. This is RIGHT after Syd left the band, possibly weeks.....they had no other material yet! GIlmour obviously reveres Syd's talent as he produced Barrett's two solo albums, was a childhood friend of Syd's, and covers Syd's songs in his concerts to this very day! NO ONE could sing "Flaming" other than Syd, obviously, and it didn't stay in their setlists the way "Astronomy Domine" and "Interstellar Overdrive" did. I've never heard Gilmour ever diss Syd in an interview, quite the contrary. He says that he thinks of Syd every time he sings "Wish You Were Here". So.....so much for all that! Yeah, it's awkward and uncomfortable. Look at Rick Wright, he doesn't seem that into it either, they're all just trying to get through the appearance, obviously. Syd left in 1968, and this clip is from 1968.
I'd agree with this statement in its entirety. This Bouton Rouge performance seems to be excruciating for all members of the band - Gilmour in particular, of course. I speculate that this gig was booked well before Syd's departure and they were dragged into it (figuratively, anyway) kicking and screaming. It's also worth mentioning that when Syd's departure was made official, their manager (Peter Jenner) kicked the Floyd to the curb and there was massive pressure from the record company as well. It had to be a fairly awful situation at that point, even though Piper at the Gates of Dawn was a success. I'm sure in many respects they had to feel as if the band was about to collapse.
Oh, I dunno. Had he wanted this video taken down, he could easily do so, since he IS Pink Floyd. I think he's come to terms with his career, both highs and lows.
Looks more like they were taking down the ones with money (not the song) potential in them, which are in the box set. They're still being taken down, but not at the rate that happened some months ago, in the great purge.
Gilmour has said before that he found it uncomfortable at this early point, stepping in and singing Syd's songs. He realized that the material wasn't a good fit for him, but they had to go with it until they could write new songs.
just imagine if Syd would have been in the group for just a couple of more months we would been able to view this footage of them as a five piece. It so sad there no recording of the 6 gigs they did together as a five piece. I believe this was filmed in Feb of 6, prob just days or weeks after Syd was kicked out. I know it had to happen, I just wished that he could have been in the group for a few more months in order to get a recording of them live. But it was never meant to be!
Sid wrote, played lead guitar, and sang this song. You can tell that Dave's register is too high for this song, it almost sounds like he is talking. The studio version is awesome, brings back incredible teenage memories...
Pink floyd is a mix of genius! Syd brought the psychedelic/artistic breaktrough, Waters the philosophic and theatrical part., Gilmour, wright and mason, the instrumental perfection. Bravo!
i know we all love Syd Barrett, but this very very very early Dave Gilmour performance with the Pink Floyd is amazing. it must have been within a month of Syd's leaving. amazing.
He might not have seemed to be very into the song, but Gilmour is SO BEAUTIFUL to watch, I really Don't mind :) Rick wasn't Smiling either--they ALL looked a bit Less than Enthusiastic. Except maybe Nick, in his lovely Silver shirt--Gotta Love the 60's & 70's Men's clothing LOL
That is Dave's voice. He was the replacement, and the band had to play something until they could create more music. I cannot imagine Roger singing Syd's songs so it had to be Dave. Interesting upload. Thank you!
Roger Waters and his slide whistle solo--a far cry from the bombastic self-pity of the Wall, brilliant as some of it is. The influence of Barrett still afloat in him here, all sunlight, insouciance and childhood.
Brilliant comment. Even as early as that French TV interview you can hear the self-assurance peeking through. He at one point laments playing "halls and ballrooms," and wishes soon for an audience to, "sit and enjoy what we are actually playing," which is quite connected to what apparently provided the catalyst for, "The Wall." It's only a hint at his naturally present egotism, but it's definitely there. Carefully considering the dynamics of what he's suggesting in that one little brief statement, it was already evident in 1967 with Syd that he felt at least a bit of a sentiment like, "We (I'm) are (is) the important one, I've got this stringed wooden thingy making beguiling musical tones and you, observer of our (my) art, ought to be seated to quietly consider each moment of my hand twiddling because every twitch and pluck has the power of sorcery."
I do not think David was ecstatic at the idea of taking on his best friends' piece. Also, Syd was know to slip into the audience and sit and stare at the PF when they least expected, at least in the beginning of his 'departure'. Could be a bit unnerving.
@@toyaquiyvoyaya What are you trying to say? I think Dave and Syd had a good relationship. No animosity there. Maybe not best freinds but certainly Dave was there for Syd like no other member of floyd was after his departure. Even helping him make his solo albums on drums and what.not.
pf after syd were obscured by clouds because syd was larger than life living proof and piper lp is a masterpiece. syd ruled with a mystical hand and later he ruled his gardens with in his recluse years.
@johny9693 i dont blame him, i would feel so awkward singing someone else's songs in the band that they started and knowing they might also possibly be watching me sing them on tv too
Poor Dave. You'd never guess from this that he'd eventually not only be the keeper of the band's flame a half century hence, but one of rock's most respected guitarists and singers. This performance feels more like a first or second rehearsal by a newly formed Pink Floyd-type band trying out some guy who answered their classified ad for a Syd Barret-type singer. Which, at this early low point in their career, probably wasn't too far from the truth.
He's still finding his voice here. For every comment i see that says "Oh, they're legends, blah di blah," they were mostly seen as just a unique group at this point. Piper is my favorite Floyd record, but it definitely wasn't for the masses. Dark Side made them a household name.
Love Gilmour to death and I respect his talent immensely. That being said Syd should be the only person to sing this song. It perfectly fits him and his personality. Gilmour seems uncomfortable preforming this.
Well, imagine being stuck in that position, hey we already have this tour to do, so you need to be syd. knowing the impact Gilmour will have clearly shows me that this would have been a pretty depressing situation.
Because Dave's and Syd's singing styles are totally different, and Dave was trying to copy Syd's here. Dave's good at floaty and pretty, not so much Syd-whimsical.
aw cmon man he didnt ruin it. syd knew he was going crazy, and it was his choice to leave. david is awesome and he didnt ruin it. he just made them a little different, that's all.
I agree that Syd Barrett wrote it and sung it. The lyrics alone without even hearing the song sound very Syd. With that said, Dave had a lower register than Syd. Dave is pretty much a high baritone that can sing comfortably up to A4 or so and can sing down to C#2, but can still hit some higher notes. Syd had a higher register and would probably be classified more as a low tenor that could also sing down to D#2, but hit higher notes more effortlessly.
This song's also proof that Norm Smith did an amazing job pulling the band together to record a psychedelic masterpiece when the band was really, at heart, a thrashing hard dronerock band. 2 sides to their coin.
Considering hiw this was early Pink Floyd and that The Piper at The Gates of Dawn was a Syd Barret album that was meant for his voice and Ricks ,David did pretty good. His voice is raspy, so what?
Bloody hell. Go and educate yourself. Read books about the Floyd. Dave did not steal anyone's place. Syd suggested inviting Dave in. Please go read stuff!
Don't know how many times I've seen this, but David's look of "I don't want to sing this crap song" gets me every time. Not that I'm saying it's a crap song! But look at his face! It cracks me up seeing how enthusiastic Nick Mason seemed!!
everyone stop dissing glimour, he is unenthusiastic cause he i very uncomfortable. He was replacing his friend(syd) and really didnt want to be doing so in the first place
Donovan was great, but this song is in an altogether different realm. "Watching buttercups cup the light. Sleeping on a dandelion. Too much, I won't touch you, but then I might" outclasses any Donovan lyrics a gardenful. Love many songs on Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow, and Hurdy Gurdy Man, but Barrett was the wizard-poet-Blakean-childhood genius beyond compare.
Dave Gilmour has no business singing anything from the first 2 albums. Those are almost the exclusive domain of Syd. If anything Waters should be singing that song.
come on people Syd was awesome, but he went crazy, there's nothing they could do about it but to carry on with Gilmour who by the way wrote a lot of amazing solos.
Holy cow Gilmour performing a Syd composition without Syd.. So rare
This was before he was officially kicked out too. I mean they basically had but Syd didn't know at first he was kicked out. Dated February 20th 1968, Syd was only known to play with them in January but they'd only just in February, like a week before this to not pick him up for a gig.
The way Dave stares at the camera seals it; he does not want to be there lol
Firststrike790 It was this look of pure hatred, misery, and anger, every time.

My guess is that Roger was doing most of the dragging. lol
This is one Gilmour would probably want to scrub from the record.
Oh, I dunno. Had he wanted this video taken down, he could easily do so, since he IS Pink Floyd. I think he's come to terms with his career, both highs and lows.

Why is everybody bitching? This is awesome. It's a laid back vocal song, not pour your heart out Michael Bolton style.
the dramatic stare at 0:50 always gets me

Damn, Nick's drumming was soooooooo friggin cool.

It pains me to see Gilmour doing Syd's songs. The sacrifice he had to go through to finally make his own sound later.
I love this just for the fact that it is TRULY live, and that’s a rarity for a clip from the era.
Pink floyd is a mix of genius! Syd brought the psychedelic/artistic breaktrough, Waters the philosophic and theatrical part., Gilmour, wright and mason, the instrumental perfection. Bravo!
Hahaha David when he makes that sarcastic eye contact with the camera :'D
David didn't hate it...he didn't like it either.
He's stated that he often felt lost and overwhelmed while trying to play Syd's parts.
I love this version so much
how it’s david not syd your crazy
@@londonmockett8952 I like both and I think this version is also good why do I have to be crazy??? You crazy!!!
Cause Syd was unique

Brutale staff david unique

David: Fucking Yippie, we can't see you anymore Syd.
Roger: I don't want to sing about Eiderdown, I want songs where I can SCRRREAAAAAMMMMMM!!!!

Love Gilmour to death and I respect his talent immensely. That being said Syd should be the only person to sing this song. It perfectly fits him and his personality. Gilmour seems uncomfortable preforming this.
he also gets some of the lyrics messed up
you're so civil and intelligent...I can't talk back. have a good life!
A FAR cry from their future venues.
50 years today!
it's a shame they're so uninterested, because this song is awesome!
Gilless falls WAAAAAY short from Syd...Not even close, galaxies apart...
@TheRiver2sea Gilmour actually already stated he wasnt comfortable singing Syd's songs in the pink floyd latest documentary...So yes you're right
David admits he felt incredibly awkward when he first joined the Floyd, and I am sure it was doubly so when he sang Syd's songs.
Plus, Dave is still fond of singing Syd's songs to this day.
Well, imagine being stuck in that position, hey we already have this tour to do, so you need to be syd. knowing the impact Gilmour will have clearly shows me that this would have been a pretty depressing situation.

I mean atleast he gave it a go.
Amazing when you consider the times. More than half the worlds population wasn't even born yet. I think the world needs a good dose of Floyd.
