    I bought the white dial variant from an AD, and was keeping poor time. I bought a timegrapher in the meantime and checked it. It was all over the place like yours and sent it to the swatch group. They replaced the movement and got it back within a couple of weeks. The new movement works great.

    I think the crown is perfect for this watch since it makes winding the watch much easier

  • @rockimaru

    I like the no date, really simplifies and doesn't interrupt the flow of the dial. but I found myself missing the date window more than appearances. In a perfect world where I can always remember the date, yes, I go with no date. 😁

    You may want to check out the MKII Hawkinge, very similar specs. A bit more expensive but all watches are personally QC’d by watchmaker Bill Yao. Just a thought.

    Going to agree with you, I have the automatic Khaki with the red second hand, keeps very good time, easy to check the time at a glance. If I need to dress it up I switch straps to the metal bracelet it came with, otherwise a black leather every day. Where I live it was $650 Cdn.

  • @rikoflishas
    @rikoflishas 6 років тому +4

    it is a charming watch. I would recommend this as the first automatic! don't make mistakes like so many that get a seiko 5 because it is cheap but after a year the watch doesn't keep time accurately or a piece loosens in the movement. pretty amazing little watch

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому +1

      I like a lot of Seiko 5's in terms of their style and for the most part they are built pretty well. They are a good value watch. But, as you said, the movements aren't great in terms of time keeping. That has been my experience anyway. I'm not sure I would recommend them for the first time mechanical watch buyer at this point. They make a good watch for the enthusiast looking to add some variety to a growing collection that is affordable however.

      I have a Hamilton Khaki field king automatic and a Hamilton field khaki officer mechanical, love them both!! Bought them through jomashop using the affirm payment method. I have a seiko 5 automatic too, great starter watch but I wore it when using a reciprocating saw and it is like 5 minutes too fast per day now, needs repair...oops.
      I am planning on buying this hammy!! Water resistance is mediocre but ehh, Hamilton is life!!

  • @therichardchannel
    @therichardchannel 6 років тому +5

    the lack of AR on Hamilton crystals is really baffling. It's the reason I'm gonna sell my Khaki King. In places where there's uneven overhead lighting the watch is pretty much illegible because of the glare. And for some reason it's much more reflective than Seiko sapphire crystals that also don't have AR like on the alpinist or Sarb033/035 in comparison.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому

      Yeah I don't know why they don't throw an AR coating on the underside of the crystal, it would make their already great watches top notch.

    • @flow2tech
      @flow2tech 6 років тому +1

      therichardchannel There was no AR on these original military pieces anyways so I'm cool with it on this style of watch.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому

      It's funny actually, for a military watch you'd think AR coating would be a necessity. The glint off the crystal could give away your position, AR might help with that.

    • @flow2tech
      @flow2tech 6 років тому

      JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Ya one would think eh... I guess Hammy is notorious for no ar.. Guess I can't really complain at that price point but would be nice if they stepped their game up. It's funny, a few of my $300 micros have some of the best ar I've seen.. My marinemaster 300 doesn't even have the greatest either given its price point.

    Yes thanks for posting. First of its kind on an exciting release. On the time grapher... the auto says 21600 and the mechanical says 28800. What’s up with that?

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому +1

      The Auto uses an H-10 movement, which was a new movement Hamilton started using in the last year or two, based on a modified ETA 2824-2, and the beat rate was slowed down on that new movement.

    • @galenbaby
      @galenbaby 6 років тому +2

      JustBlueFish Watch Reviews whoa. I didn’t realize that. I have an old khaki from the 90s and I put up with no AR because I dig the dial and it beats at 28800. Seems like a bummer to modify the 2824 but sacrifice the smoothness

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому +2

      Part of raising the power reserve up to 80 hours was having to reduce the beat rate. I guess that’s part of the trade off.

  • @Daavi85
    @Daavi85 4 роки тому

    I don't understand why every reviewer shows the khaki field auto that you have as the Auto equivalent when in my opinion the Khaki field auto day/date 42mm that I bought in 2018 when released is really the auto equivalent, the look almost identical, the dial is identical to the mechanical except for the obvious day/date, size and all brushed case instead of bead blasted and has a 100m water resistant rating, I love the look and do like the day/date, for me I really wanted the look of the classic mechanical but in a bigger auto and in this watch I found it, for reference it is H70535031, I have multiple straps but it looks perfect on my Olive green NATO, great watch.

    Since you've got a warranty from an AD, why not run the watch for a few weeks and see if the information on the time grapher shows it running normal?

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому +1

      I'm not a big believer of a break in period on watches. In my experience with a lot of mechanical and autos I have only seen very slight variations too timekeeping after running a watch in for a month. I wouldn't expect a watch with this big of a problem to improve. That said someone has suggested that it could be caused by an echo in the case, because there is a metal dust shield inside the watch between the movement and the caseback (on the old version of the mechanical, not confirmed this version also has that). Unfortunately I'd have to open the watch and remove the dust shield, and check it on the timegrapher to see if that's the cause, and that would most certainly void my warranty if it was obvious that the case back had been removed.

    • @Redbirdsfan1970
      @Redbirdsfan1970 6 років тому

      My collection is small and much smaller than yours but I have still seen some improvements in accuracy and repeatability with a few of mine after a couple of weeks of being worn. But after thinking about it that could be from the watch being dormant for a little while in inventory, etc. But given this is a brand new design the time from Switzerland to your wrist is pretty minimal and not potentially a year or more. So, it's likely your watch doesn't need a break in period.

    Nice video. Question: Could that "faux" patina really be a desert tan coloration? Desert tan is a popular color for military related equipment (backpacks, boots, etc.), likely because of the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому

      I wouldn’t fault you for looking at it that way, but no I think it’s clearly supposed to make it appear aged/vintage. It doesn’t present too obnoxiously on this watch, but I’d still prefer it to just be white.

    • @malikknows3510
      @malikknows3510 6 років тому +1

      You're probably correct. Given the popularity of that desert tan/coyote color with military veterans and others interested in military aesthetics, and given that only watch nerds like us know what patina is or what it looks like, I think Hamilton may be trying to design watches to attract folks who may not know anything about watches but know what they like. I'm old enough to have seen olive drab rival khaki brown as a color denoting military styled objects. Seems to me that may be going on here. Oh, and this brownish color does serve to denote a field/infantry watch as opposed to an aviation watch.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому +1

      The Hamilton website describes the watch with the following caveat - with "old radium" style superluminova hands. So it's made to look like aged creamy orange radium luminous paint. That said, it could have the added benefit that you're talking about, for non-watch people who will look at it in the light of a military themed coloration as well.

Regarding the soon-to-be-released day/date version of this watch - I really don't understand why they had to go all the way to 42mm and add the day. Bothers me that some of their pilots watches have a screw down crown yet their FIELD watches, designed to be go-anywhere, do-anything watches, don't!. I know you could argue that 50m is probably sufficient, but 50M is NOT designed for swimming, which is the sort of thing one could reasonably expect a 'military' field watch to be exposed to! Major flaw IMO, I would buy one if they did . . . so won't be buying one anytime soon, not when so other manufactures address this issue!

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому +13

      On a mechanical watch I'm not sure you could have a screw down crown. Once the watch is full wound up you can not advance the crown forward anymore, so you couldn't screw the crown in, unless perhaps it was reverse threaded and you screwed it down by spinning it in the backwards direction. A screw down crown isn't necessarily needed for water resistance anyway, it mostly just ensures that the crown doesn't inadvertently get pulled out while it's submerged, with the exception of watches like Rolex with their double and triple lock crowns that have extra seals. That said 50m is definitely on the very low end of what I'd deem as acceptable for a tool watch, 100m would be much better.

    • @adbraham
      @adbraham 6 років тому +3

      Screw down crowns are quite widespread on mechanical watches; although if you mean on MANUAL mechanical watches, as this is, you are quite right, although I understand Hamilton also make quartz field watches which also feature a non-screw down crown, and automatic field watches ditto. The additional level of resistance afforded by a well designed screw down crown is in my view worthwhile since 50M isn't really designed for full submersion, which in my view any watch termed a FIELD watch should be capable of. In addition, 'depth' rating only really applies to a watch with new and intact seals; in the real world it's wise to exceed the requirements by a margin to account for worn seals, just to be on the safe side; yes, folk should have their watches serviced regularly to ensure, inter alia, water resistance is maintained, but all too often they don't! I for one would rather be on the safe side. Are screw-down crowns necessarily more water resistant per se, not always, it's dependant on design (as you state), and sometimes it's just a sales gimmick, but having said that they are usually associated with greater levels of water resistance. This is still a nice watch, and for many the depth rating would bot be an issue of course, but I think there are comparably priced, but ergonomically better options out there. If I suggest some, perhaps you could review them? ;) Anyway, thanks for the interesting review!

      I would just say, having the field khaki mechanical manual wind, if you sneeze on it, it is susceptible to moisture. I would not wear it swimming. I don't even splash it when I wash my hands. I had to return mine under warranty for moisture for a full service. When it was returned, I notice the crown stem feels much more tight, like the new stem o-ring is nice and snug. I've heard of similar complaints regarding moisture. Screw down crown would be nice, but it is not good for a manual wind only watch. The crown threads will end up stripping over time. Just my opinion based on experience with a very similar Hamilton.

    • @0xss
      @0xss 6 років тому +2

      You can have manual winding and a screw down crown, the panerai Pam610 has it. But it might add extra cost to the production of the watch,so hamilton might have chosen to skip it.

    • @adbraham
      @adbraham 6 років тому

      Quite agree; early manual-wind submariners had screw-down crowns, so it is possible to do screw-down WITH a manual movement; most designs de-couple from the 'key-less work' part of the movement when pushed in

    Oh, one last question on hand-winding the Khaki mechanical. You mentioned stopping hand-winding when you start to feel the resistance. I was under the impression movements today can't be over-wound, that there is a mechanism that prevents over winding damage.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  5 років тому +1

      Automatic watches allow you to keep winding the crown, without damaging the watch, by letting the mainspring slip in the barrel if it’s at max power. Mechanical watches like this don’t do that, once you feel the crown get snug and stop, don’t keep trying to spin it.

    Moral of the story, buy authorized at any price point. You are supporting a legitimate supply chain and you get the relationship and the peace of mind of a warranty which by law (California) the AD has a responsibility to send it in for service for you under warranty. They will tell you it’s faster for you to send it in but if you can wait they must send it in for you. I once had to send in a JLC Master Control and it was covered under warranty, if it was grey market it would be serviced by some lowest bidder watchmaker, you don’t want them using a generic case back opener on a watch like that as it will leave scratches.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 років тому

      Thanks for watching Garrett, and for the comments. I agree and prefer to buy from AD's when the price makes sense. Some watches are so deeply discounted from Grey Market sellers that even if you had to send it in to the manufacturer for a full service at your own cost, it would still be cheaper than buying from an AD.

Now the big one is lume...Hamilton least the old version the lume was very poor...n]barely lasted 15 minutes when charged with a 700 lume flashlight for 5 minutes...seriously bad. H Goose Saluda albeit Quartz is better price point. They have missed an opportunity to improve the previous version - not for me.
