Gary Barton was the assistant wrestling coach @ university or Rhode Island in1976. I wrestled him every day in practice & realized why he was a national champion. Cause he was a Wiesel on the mat! U thought you had control , then he was gone! Lol spoke with him last week after 47 years. And we still laugh about practice! Blessings to all older grapplers!❤️
Great year for Iowa State. In the Olympics at Munich, Ben Peterson won the gold medal along with Cyclone alumni Dan Gable, while Taylor took the bronze.
Jeez. Can you imagine being ridden by Chris Taylor? Unlimited HWT was pretty interesting. Everybody rooted against those huge, fat dudes. Plus there were the small heavies who were technically sound and powerful for their size that everybody rooted FOR, it was pretty crazy. Now we don't have the truly huge heavies anymore and most of the heavies are fairly athletic.
@@mattmartinez1414 I’m asking in the hopes of seeing Dan Gable wrestle in these tournaments. There’s only highlights of most his college days, and only two full matches on UA-cam
@@mattmartinez1414 no I was actually referring to Owings and Marty Willigan the year prior. I said college matches, and that’s freestyle with Kemp. Also there are some freestyle matches of him, there’s the one with Kemp (obviously), and there are some of his Olympic tournament when he was at his peak. There’s also a documentary called The Champion that shows brief highlights of him but not whole matches. That’s all there is to my knowledge
@@mattmartinez1414 i might of read afterwards that a div. II college was not eligble for team points back then, but individuals could qualify for the Div. tourney. correct me if i am wrong
My favorite collegiate wrestler of all time Wade Schalles, period.
I love watching these old school matches

Great matches please post more of kids wrestling from 70s 80s and 90s
Do you have anymore of these videos? I am looking for a video of my dad from 1971.

Thanks for posting, Pat! Wish all these bouts could be posted in their entirety.
Hi Pat! Miss reading your posts on the old US Wrestling Forums, but I guess the forums are gone for good. Thanks for posting this.

Do you have any from 67-70?
Yes!! Or from 1971 or 1969. Wish we could see ALL the matches, not just the finals.

@@ianshue2890 yep yep. I’m guessing the two you are referring to are the one with Larry Owings and the one with Lee Kemp?

Andy Matter! His son won it all 28 yrs later. Striking resemblance 😆
more from rick Sanders
how is clarion not in the top 10 with 2 individual champions?
I wanna say they ended up being like 4th or something. College division (nowadays division II).

@@flyingwasp1 yeah you might be wright. I am not sure..
@@flyingwasp1 That's true they didn't count d2 or 3 team points, Bakersfield would have done well with Azevedo and Gonzalez in the 70's.
Wait 409 lbs? How the hell was Chris able to wrestle?
Was no limit back then
Some pretty sketchy wrestling in some of these matches. Lol.
