      I feel ya on this. Sure it’s not the best of quality, but it stings to watch this being laughed at. I recall this being a huge part of Star Wars figure collecting for me in my childhood. I had a few from the line prior, but Episode 1 was when Star Wars toy collecting became a huge hobby.

      @@cmjon6380 As you can see I have a sizeable collection from that time also. You got to laugh with these wacky voices. I'm not here roasting it into the ground, I just never heard them until now getting the Comm device. All I do here is praise these older 90's figures, from Star Wars to every other line I show. I don't collect it if I hate it!

      @@MBXfilms I feel ya. It honestly started pretty rough with lots of salt, but you are correct. When Episode 1 figures hit store shelves, this feature was ahead it’s time. No one really did this. You had pull string toys with voices and push button features with some tinny voices and sound effects, but so many Star Wars toys came out and all with these chips that I think had about 4 quotes and some even interacted when scanned back and forth between the two. If memory serves correctly. Try to scan Kenobi and Qui Gon and I think they might sync up……might. You might have to save them both and use the buttons to get the quotes to sorta sync in. It’s been a good decade since I dusted mine off to listen to them again. It just stung a bit from the first half. Thank you for commenting on it. Lots could get aggressive in a defensive tone, but you approached this with open palms rather than clenched fists. I appreciate that.

      @@cmjon6380 It's all about fun and remembering the past here, or learning about it for the first time in a lot of younger viewer's cases. It's tough to make the videos interesting for both but I try to leave it open for anyone to follow along.

      Sounds like a bit more modern version, though it may be the exact technology since they made this type of stuff in 1983, but maybe the cost only made sense from the 90's and on.

    Today I unearthed this from a box in our attic that hasn't seen the light of day in a decade. It still had an old 9v that I replaced and it still mostly works. Some of the chips weren't reading at all and I only managed to save one chip's sound but the sound quality is exact to the quality in this video

      Obviously some serious compression that worked on some but sort of ruined others in comical ways. But it's an awesome item to have since it looks like the movie prop AND has all the voice and sound effects. The sound effects would have been my favorite as a kid, but now they are all entertaining to hear.

    Ah yes, the thing my parents got me after much whining and immediately regretted it.
    I still have this and bunch of the chip although mine is labeled as "CommTalk" instead of "CommTech".
    I really think that the weird "holding your nose"-quality of the voices comes from how the audio files were compressed for this to work. The chips are pretty tiny after all and I don't think they have the storage for much higher quality sounds.

    • @MBXfilms
      @MBXfilms  Рік тому +2

      It still sort of amazing me that it can access the data that way. I guess I am old school beyond even this. They did a modern verision of it for one or two of the newer Star Wars movies with better voice quality, but old CommTech here has way more figures, from the prequels and original trilogy

    I had a couple of these chips from my EP I figs but I never had the player. Wow! so bizarre the way they sound but I guess it was the best they could do back then.

    • @MBXfilms
      @MBXfilms  Рік тому

      It was a $20 device by itself but the technology to do it all seems involved for the time. Maybe it is more simple than I am imagining, but doing all the digitizing of lines and sound effects; making it fit on the chips, ect makes you wonder how costly it was to do.
