I have lived in France since 2005; I started drawing SS in 2009, my late wife and I lived very comfortably with 3,000€ in retirement income Today I live in SW France about 100 yards from the Atlantic Ocean and 1/2 hour from Saint-Sébastien, Spain in a one BR cottage 100 yards from the water's edge. I only pay 525€a month for rent; utilities are about 100€/monthly (electricity, Internet, water, cable unlimited mobile phone service anywhere in the world) I am a French national. Health care is free and is superb. Health insurance, home insurance is about 75€ /monthly. France is a lovely lovely place o live; the French people are absolutely great. We have 3 mountain ranges, and two oceans; the food and wine are sans pareil !

In Belize, I believe expats avoid Belize City as it is most populous and has the most crime. Beyond that, most cities are smaller and very nice to live in, especially out on the islands on the barrier reef. Spent 2 weeks there climbing Mayan pyramids and going to islands and beaches. I would love to live there. Easy to communicate too as English is the main language and US dollars and Belizean dollars are accepted everywhere (fixed 2 to 1 conversion rate). Great place to be and I think it is the least populated country in Central America.

Briggs ignores visa requirements. Cost of living and visa requirements are not the same thing at all. There are some good options on his list for people living on modest social security checks where that check alone gives eligibility. But mostly not. In some cases you can qualify by showing and or importing large amounts of money instead of qualifying on income. Overall I would suggest people do their own research on visas first before wasting time exploring a country that they personally can't qualify for. For example Vietnam has no retirement visa at all and recently cracked down on people trying to retire there in alternative ways like business visas. A really stupid suggestion. Forget Vietnam. Retirees are not welcome by the government there. Almost worse was his suggestion of Malaysia. They recently tripled the financial requirements of their already expensive My Second Home program. They've basically killed the program for almost everyone.
Bottom line just because you're American and want to live somewhere doesn't mean they want you or will allow you to.

I've been to Vietnam about 7 times, my most recent trip was for 13 months. I lived in Ho Chi Minh city. There are numerous blogs (of various quality) where you can learn more details about living there.
The big obstacle to living there (retiring there) is going to be a Visa. They have no "retirement visa". You can get a work visa to extend your stay but teaching English isn't for everyone.
I felt Vietnamese people in general were kind of generally wonderful. That is until you get into traffic. Whether you are driving a scooter or riding in a hired car, traffic in the big cities like Ho Chi Minh (aka Saigon) is insane. You won't likely die because traffic seldom moves quickly but if your riding a scooter be prepared to deal with no adherence to traffic laws. Scooters enter busy roads from side roads without a glance at oncoming traffic. They ride on sidewalks, drive along the side of the road against incoming traffic. Even riding is a Grab (like Uber) car is crazy.
Most young Vietnamese people seem to speak English well. Signs are in Vietnamese and English (mostly). Private hospitals are great and for Americans very cheap relative to the US. Public hospitals are cheap and very very crowded. Hit or miss if they speak much English at the hospitals.
I could go on. Banking is difficult, finding your way around the large cities is a challenge. Infrastructure is primitive. $1500 a month in a major city in Vietnam would be living on a tight budget. The country has made strides in the past several years and it's on track to be a great place to live. Unless you're Clutch Cargo (look it up millennials) you might not be comfortable living there. Happy trails.

Uh Vietnam is forever closed to foreigners long term bud. English teaching jobs now require a 4 year degree, teaching certificate and 3 years experience. Other job types, forget about it, China, the major income source has shut down English Teaching by foreigners. There is virtually no way for anyone foreign to live long term and they recently purged 99% of foreigners out. I’m here, I’m married to a local and so here forever so what I’m saying is factual, you turds looking to escape to Vietnam, cross it off your list we don’t want you here.

My wife and I own a house in Malaysia. After investigating practically every other country, I realized that where we were was the best "inexpensive" place to live. I want a place where I can: 1. grow own food, 2. have plenty of fresh water, 3. safe, 4. affordable, 5. some English, 6. Friendly, 7. Can buy land/house $250k us is the minimum allowed so that you are not competing with the local population. The Cons are: 1. It's hot 2. and humid. 3. the haze. 4. the driving...you must be extra careful especially of the thousands of motorcycles. Don't want to hurt anyone. In my opinion, you can easily live on $1000 US. You can find an apartment for $150 to $500. Groceries, internet, gasoline, electricity, water and sewer, eating out are all much less expensive than the US. about 1/4 th as expensive. However, there are two things that are expensive: 1. imported cars from Japan. Local cars are cheap. 2. the cost of land. There are a variety of people there: Malaysians, Chinese, Indians, British, etc. The main thing is to show respect to all people whether they are rich or poor, white or dark!

A couple cannot live comfortable in Thailand for 1,200 a month. Not even close. I know, because I live in Phuket and have for many, many years. Beer, wine and spirits prices are double what you would pay in the US because of the alcohol tax. Rents and electricity isn't too expensive. That is the only break you will get. If you get tired of eating street food at mom and pop local restaurants expect to pay for it. If you like cheese and salami be prepared to pay double the price from back in the states. All in all Thailand is no longer cheap if you want to live close to the nice beaches. Issan is less expensive but hot and boring. Also most Thais do not speak english. I do so it makes life much easier for me. One more consideration and it's the most important one is getting a retirement visa, which you have to get from the Thai Consulate in your home country. This visa requires you to deposit 800,000 baht into a Thai Bank and that balance cannot drop below 400,000 baht prior to renewing this visa.

You’re right about the 800,000 baht though. All you can do is stick it in the bank and pretend it isn’t there. I never touch that deposit.

it also depends of where you buy the food because as a Costa Rican most of tourist that came here just go to the expensive places like automercado or pricemart and then clamed about the high cost of living but not act like medium class costaricans that know where they can find the same but with half the price, and obviously you wont find something cheap near the beach but with a bit of distance you can rent a house for a lot less than that and make a better saving. What I always recommend is find some trustfully locals and ask what they do to live and what they recommend because obviously business just will offer you the most expensive ones because they know you are a foreigner but making good decisions you probably will live fine with your couple with $1300. Living knowing all the options and you will live like a king. Pura Vida!

Additionally, Merida is the second safest city in all North America according to some articles. Cost of living really is on par with the Philippines and close to the US and a lot of American businesses so the adjustment may not be as hard. Everyone that's interested in moving out of the country should do their own due diligence watching UA-cam videos from people that actually live there and are like minded as yourself based on age, gender, socioeconomic status, interest and points of view.

Also the volcano in La Palma erupted a few months ago. It did serious and major damage. Homes lost, roads damaged, lives lost, displaced people out of their homes for year's, jobs lost, education interrupted. The biggest volcano is El Teide on Tenerife, but it's not the only volcano. There are several amongst the islands. El Teide erupted about 200 or so maybe 300 years ago. You can see the effects in the town called Garachico. Canarians live everyday with the knowledge that they live amongst volcanos and they don't live in denial that one will never erupt and not affect them. The fact that the one on La Palma erupted recently just confirms to them that this reality is true. They don't live in fear but there is a dedicated team of full time vulcanologists that monitor the volcnos every day and night. The people know that on any day and at any time they may hear the sound of the towns sirens going off warning them to evacuate immediately. If you live on the Canary Islands you too must live with this reality.

Thailand's medical care costs, which obviously are important to retirees, have recently been unfairly increased. They do not have a socialized medical care system
and the government passed a law in 2019 making it legal for hospitals to overcharge foreigners. Previously, this type of tiered pricing had been limited to things
like amusement park and national park admission. All things considered, this adversely affects your quality of life, and that knocks Thailand out of the top ten--

I an am American retiree who has been living in Bangkok, Thailand for the past 5 years. The cost of living here is indeed lower. You will get more for your $$ here especially on big expenses like rent. You can live here on your Social Security but you won't be living in luxury. One problem here in Thailand, and I suspect in many other retirement countries, is that the minimum financial requirements for a visa or visa extension may exceed your low income. You have to show the Thai Immigration Dept. 65,000 baht/month income (about $2000/month) to stay here. There is more to this but minimum income requirements are something to look into early before deciding where you plan to move to.

@@bluejay3945 I am saying that you have to meet a minimum income requirement to keep getting 1 year extensions in Thailand. The amount of Social Security you get may not meet this minimum. The amount of SS depends on your salary history and when to start collecting. There are other ways to meet the financial requirement such as deposit $26,000 in a Thai bank. This is money that has to stay there and cannot be used for living expenses. The point is that what you need to live in a country may be different than the Immigration financial requirements. You have to consider both.

cheapest place to live is Lithuania: wage is 450 euros a month, for that money you pay living taxes, for water, electriciry, gas. then you must buy a food and a petrol to your car, buy clothes and go to cinema or theatre, so the cheapest country to live is Lithuania in Europe

Don’t feel bad about giving up on Mandarin, I worked in China for four years and I’m still extremely limited with it.

I turned 40 this year. As an older millennial I worry about my retirement already! Was telling my kids I need to find my "forever home" soon so I can get it paid off and have less bills as an elder if I am lucky to live to old age in this nutty world.

Also I would've thought that Slovenia deserved a place on this list - cheap(ish) but gloriously beautiful and a great place for those of us who like cooler weather and skiing and hiking and stuff :)
