AU Sypnosis:
Elena and Stefan are dating, Elena notices that Caroline and Stefan are becoming close, Caroline tells Stefan that Elena is her friend and can't be with him so he decides to break up with Elena (Elena knowing the reason for the breakup is caroline). After the breakup Stefan and Caroline start hooking up, Damon tells Elena about what they've been up to and the betrayal hurts her to the point of making herself move on with someone new. When Stefan sees Elena moving on it makes him jealous and he realizes he still loves her, leaving Caroline to try and be with Elena. Elena tells him she feels nothing for him and feels sympathy for Caroline. In the end, Caroline and Elena make up, and Stefan is left alone.
