I wouldn't be surprised if Balatro was nominated for GOTY just so they'd have the excuse to have the orchestra play it's theme because of how good it was
I feel that Balatro got in to counteract the pushback they expected for Shadow of Erdtree getting the nomination, “Don’t focus on the DLC, we put a solo dev’s indie debut up for the biggest award!!!!” But if it means we get that amazing rendition, I’m okay with that.
this is completely true. balatro was deserving of the nomination regardless, but it definitely felt like a token indie pick to pretend like they care, and it was never going to win because of it

Maybe I don’t have the ear for music but I wish I could hear my man’s on all the different flutes he looked like he was really feeling it and doing his big one but I heard none of it😢
Rebirth got robbed in my opinion…. Astro Bot was a lot of fun, but it gets repetitive and plays it safe. Rebirth was the best all around game, and it took the most risks.

Balatro is close to being in the top three roguelike card games of all time, like Slay The Spire and Monster Train. Compared to Wukong or FF7, a generic action game, even if good, and a remake, is the most unique entry for sure, along Astrobot.

It's a bass flute, you can hear it as those airy, almost percussion-like breaths before the Elden Ring section.
