Bic Cristal vs Bic Round Stic Ballpoint Pen Comparison and Review

  • Here are two iconic Bic ballpoint pens - the Bic Cristal and Bic Round Stic. Both of these pens have been office and school standards for years, but I was curious as to how the pens differed beyond the obvious physical features. Both pens are medium point, both have blue ink. The Cristal claims to write "smoother" than the standard Bic pen, and the Round Stic claims to write "longer" than the Paper Mate Ink Joy 100.
    Here I put the two instruments side-by-side and compare and contrast their features.

    When it comes to inexpensive bulk ballpoint pens, BIC is always more reliable for me than Papermate is. Papermate pens always dry up on me or have issues as they get older. BICs keep on writing. My biggest problem with BIC pens is that I'm always losing them before I've exhausted the ink!

      Hi kevmorris3000 - LOL I totally understand! It seems like I am always misplacing/losing one of my Bic pens. I also prefer them to the Paper Mates. Thanks!

    I just bought a pack of 22 Bic Cristal pens for $3.59 at Target, which comes out to 16 cents per pen.
    These pens bring me back to my days in grammar school. The hexagonal shape helps to give you a stronger grip when writing and feels very good in the hand as compared to the Round Stic. They write very well.

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  2 роки тому +3

      Hi - I often wonder if Bic made these a hex shape to simulate the feel of a pencil, which most people were used to holding. You got a good deal on yours - these are hard to beat for the price! Thanks!

      @@AlwaysAnalog Actually, I didn't get a good deal on these. I needed them and was near a Target, so I bought them. My local supermarket has their back to school specials now and the Bic Cristals and Round Stics as well as the Paper Mate Write Brothers pens are $1.00 for a pack of ten, which comes out to 10 cents per pen.
      I will make sure to buy these pens in August from now on when the stores run their back to school specials.

    I've always found the Cristal to be smoother than the Round Stic. Add to that the fact that the Stic body feels super cheap while the Cristal feels smooth and sparkles in the light, and my vote goes straight to the Cristal. And they are unbeatable for sketching!

      The main problem with the Stic's body is that it flexes when writing. That tires out the writing hand much quicker than one would assume. Pens have been as stiff as possible since the dawn of ink writing, and for good reason.

    I’ve had a different few “fancy” pens and I always go back to Bic Cristal cause the feel when you glide it across the paper. It just feels smoother than any pen! So which was your personal favorite out of the two? I’m guessing you will say the cristal since it’s the original and more iconic pen. I wouldn’t disagree with that at all. My only problem is i definitely notice that easy glide ink and i don’t like it. I wish they would have left the cristal alone with the standard ink

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  3 роки тому +7

      Hi petruccifan38! If I had to choose, I would go with the Cristal. I like the feel of the pen better (maybe because of its hexagonal shape). I agree that the new ink formulation does not have the same response as the old ink, and I also prefer the old formula. The Easy Glide ink does seem to splotch a lot less than the old ink, and it goes on the paper much dryer, but it doesn't have the fullness of the old ink. Thank for watching!

    Round Stick Medium was always my favorite pen. The round barrel didn't hurt the callous that had formed on my right middle finger, because I wrote a lot! I was always protective of my pens and would purchase them for work because of the performance. Sometimes at work they would buy fine point which I hated. They dragged and were scratchy. I would write my name on the pen and would steal them back from my coworkers if I found my pens in their pen collections. My coworkers would laugh at me. I never wanted to share!

      My only problem with Bics is that getting one with the right ink flow is a gamble. Especially older Cristals have very viscous ink that requires a lot of force to write and it gets tiring after a few lines. A smooth Bic is _the dream._
      There's also the matter of color saturation. It's especially bad with the blues - some pens' ink have an almost indigo color, others are more navy, and a few are cobalt. Black ones can range from deep black to graphite-like medium grey. Red ones are more consistent, but a trained eye under high CRI lighting (e.g. sunlight) can tell the difference.

    The Bic cristal are the pens with the greatest and best precision that I have used. The downside is that it is a bit annoying for your body to write after a while and generates horrible calluses on your fingers. For this reason, although I love them, I have chosen to use pens with a grip so as not to hurt my hand since I write a lot.

    • @DinnerForkTongue

      Self-teaching yourself cursive was a great thing. It's a faster way to write, more elegant, and helps you train your brain. I've literally exhausted a notebook while studying these last 2 months, and from page 1 to the rear cover you won't find more than 100 blockprint letters outside of acronyms. 99% of the writing I did in it was cursive.

    These are hilariously cheap and reliable. Been using them for years. They're so cheap that I'm almost concerned about monopoly prices lol. I think I'll try to look for alternatives out of principle.

    • @AlwaysAnalog

      Hi juni meme - these are inexpensive and perform well for the price. There are alternatives out there, but I don't think there are many in the Bic price range that are as good. Thanks!

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 2 роки тому

      Juni, you'd have to look at Linc and Molin pens for a similar quality/price ratio. Even then they're a tad behind Bic.
      Unless you like black pens better. Molin's black ballpoints are Kitchen Ace (And Taking Names). The black of their ink is so bold, so full, that it makes Bic look like you're writing with a hard pencil.

    The BIC Crystal is a much better pen and DARKER as I write with black ink. The crystal is smoother and puts out a more generous amount of ink than the round-stick. Comparing the the writing, the Crystal is much smoother and nearly as smooth as the Paper Mate Gel 100 whereas, the round stick ink seems gunky and drags with slight resistance and its darkness of the ink is not as consistent from pen to pen, whereas there is never any difference in the ink among the BIC crystal pens. Most of the BIC round stick pens improve the more you write with them should you have the pen for that long, and improve in writing when warmed by your hand and fingers thus heating up the gunky ink. I though maybe this may be due to the difference in the nib, which I doubt; then again how many of you remember when the BIC nibs were completely made of a hunk of solid brass. Comparing these ball point pens to the Ink Joy is not fare game since they are different inks. The Ink Joy is a delight to use when it is not humid as this summer was leaving me to resort to any of my BIC pens. I disagree with the findings of this presentation but have to give it a like to no. 158.

    I wish Bic would do a “Classic” release, with an exact 1961 reproduction with a polished metal (brass?) tip. (My Bic razors are made in Greece.) If made in China, the reproductions could be true. Bic pens generally aren't as good as the cheap ballpoints one gets at one's local bank. I have great memories of the 1961 Bic Cristol® on sale (19¢) at my school. Once they changed from metal to plastic, I stopped buying Bics.

    I prefer Uniball Jetstream because I have arthritis in my hands. They are expensive, but I can buy a box of 12 on Amazon, and save money, compared to buying at Office Depot. BIC pens will dry out if you don’t put the cap back on. Jetstream produces a dark bold line of ink, in comparison to any BIC rollerball, without too much pressure.
