@@jameshudson169 As a first-generation son of Southern Italian parents with relatives in Sicily, there is an explanation. Sicily is an island with a proud culture of its own. However, being an official part of Italy that starts from Rome and down, it falls into the "Southern Italy" area group whose official language is Italian.

Southern Italy ??? The Isola d'Elba is part of Toscana and is such close to Genova, while "southern Italy" is the part below Roma. So FYI, Piemonte, Valle d'Aosta, Lombardia, Veneto, Friuli, Trentino, Emilia Romagna, Liguria are Northern Italy; Toscana, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo, Sardegna, Molise and Lazio are Central Italy; Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicilia are Southern Italy.

Molise, Sardegna and Abruzzo Central Italy ? Not really. Central Italy is Tuscany, Lazio, Marche and Umbria. Geograpichally Abruzzo could be to a certain extent but culturally and linguistically is South. Molise not even geograpichally. Sardinia is a thing of its own.

In Italy it comes from the hypocorism of names like BarTOLOMEO and Tommaso. Tuscany had nothing to do with Greece.
