They were not kidnapped they were sold by African merchants to Europeans. Normally African Muslims lived off the trade, buying captured Africans made slaves by other tribes during their own internal wars.

After watching the video, something that I found to be interesting was the fact that Brazil was the last country to abolish slavery as I would have never guessed that this was the case. With that being said, it is evident that there is still some unfair treatment in the descendants of Africans living in Brazil to this day and it is very unfortunate to see.
What was the first law that made them start giving land back? Also, I wonder if there was anything that happened that pushed the president to give back the land after 5 years of the law being made.
Something interesting that I found was the fact that people who were slaves identified themselves as quilombolas as they became free and ran away from violence. Although slavery was abolished, Africans were still victims of injustices such as taking their land away, land that their ancestors left them. The interesting point here is that it's been not long since laws against discrimination against African people were enforced for a change.
In South Africa a law for Land Expropriation without Compensation is being debated. I pray to God that it passes so that my people can reclaim the land that was taken from them through genocide, slavery and apartheid. Justice must prevail!!!

This is such a rich and brutal history of Brasil that is not often discussed, and you can see the disparities between Rio de Janeiro's coastal area versus the favelas in the mountains. I wonder how these populations and people like Sandra are doing under the current presidential administration.
One of the measures Brazil has recently taken is to set up affirmative action processes to open up post-high school academic possibilities for more students of African descent.
We cannot forget that the idea of slavery predates this event. In the 7th century, the Moors from North Africa invaded the Iberian peninsula, enslaving millions of Europeans. Therefore, we cannot blame the Europeans for "inventing" slavery, nor should we consider any narrative of "historical reparation" as some groups try to do in some countries (as Brazil) generating privileges for these people, just for be black.
It gives a different perspective on how even though slavery ended in 1888, there was still injustice towards the African communities. Never did they ask for more, except for their freedom, and that freedom came with a cost which was having their "home" being taken away from them. The disadvantage of claiming their property is inhumane, a place they have known for generations should not have been taken away from them.
As a Brazilian I can tell you that the lands were never given to the Afro-Brazilians after slavery was abolkished, instead, they were completely abandoned by the authorities. Most of them moved to ghetos and had to survive on their own with no help whatsoever. Consequently, most of the Afro descendents still live under harsh conditions all over the country in "favelas". Racism is still a big issue in my country. Recently, far-right politicians have made life hard for these people. Luckly, we have elected a more humane president and hopefully things will get better, but we are far from having a fair and decent country.
You hear about slavery and you know its a horrible thing, but hearing how these human beings were bid on like objects are forced to work in extreme conditions leaves me speechless. Not to mention that Brazil was the last to abolish slavery.

A lot of people could still practice their prejudice towards others that goes unknown. It's astonishing that it took so long to return the Quilombo land to the afro-brazilians. 2009 is much closer than 1888 when slavery was abolished in Brazil yet barely in 2009 the lands were returned.
There is no country in the world that did not have slavery at one time or another. Even in the Americans the so called native Americans had slaves long before the Europeans arrived. In fact slavery still exist mostly in Asia and Africa. Human nature is human nature.

It's crazy how after years of suffering by working under extreme conditions and being awarded to the highest bitter, people of African descent still need to fight for the right of their land and it is unbelievable to see the time that is taking for them to claim their land.
The fact that they had to fight for land where their people have stayed for generations. Knowing that they have made a home where all of them have run to because they have to run from something that humanity at one point said it was okay to do says a lot about how we have and haven't changed. I also can't imagine having to fight for a place I've called home for generations.

When I think of slavery I usually think as an unfortunate set of events that happened years ago. Learning that Brazil was one of the last nations to abolish slavery was very surprising. Several laws were attempted or even were enacted in years that were a lot more recent than others. Different presidents attempted to help abolish discrimination in 2003 and 2015 but it was not completely abolished. I am not sure if it was the government or system they had in place but it really makes me wonder why its taken so long for slaver and discrimination to slowly be abolished.

I feel like slavery is such a big topic that has been treated as an awkward conversation. US slavery is also not the only one around at the time. I find it very unfair how they have to fight for a home that was already theirs from early time.

I think people often forget that people from Africa suffer the most when it comes to racism. Along with other issues as well but specifically we assume because they ended slaverly the racism was gone but wrong the injustice between them was still there even after they "ended". We do not know so much about what goes on outside of U.S because we are witnessing what occurs here but not somewhere else.
Venham todos pro Brasil precisamos de imigrantes temos milhões de postos de trabalho e temos muita água limpa e muita comida todos são bem-vindos no Brasil😊
If I am to understand this video correctly, which I'm not sure I am, the Brazilian population has a lot of people of african descent? What percentage are we talking here? and how did they get to Brazil? Were they all brought as slaves by the Portuguese?
I spoke of this in previous lectures and in this week's written lecture. Portugal was the number one world buyer and exporter of African slaves. Millions of Africans crossed the Atlantic Ocean on Portuguese ships to end up working on Brazilian plantations as slaves.
Yes, we have a lot of African descendants, but they're mostly mixed race, having also European blood.
Quilombo - Ki lo n bo? "What's coming?" in the Yoruba language. Sounds like sentry language used by slaves to protect themselves.

Its interesting to know that Brazil was last to abolish slavery in 1888. In addition its crazy to hear that they had a law that gave land back to them but even years later with the new law nothing happened until president lula created a new law. After watching this video it can be seen that Brazil was the last to aboilish slavery and slavery inequality.
It wasn't the last
10 million? Try 250 million! Thanks to the honest earnest research of cheikh anta diop we know this
lool thats more than the entire population of brazil back then
That's more than the entire population of Brazil to this day
Not from africa go read a real book
Better estimates are 100 million taken from to the Western Hemisphere
Erm... Only 4m slaves came here
All Languages please....
I hate to say this but without slavery it wouldn't be no Brazil.
Your saying that like if brazil is great country its actually one of the most violent countries in the world and almost half there population live in extreme poverty
There would *
@@shrek19yearsago78 Almost half? Lol, no. Way less.
You said it boost Brazil, why not say it boost Portugal. The hypocrisy is real l
The most interesting thing was learning about the different affects that slavery had on the economy of Brazil. Their are programs that help with slaves a. Slavery is a topic that everyone learns about but the fact that the struggle for these people is still not over is interesting. Sandra lost everything and them the government introduce a new law to benefit these people even thought it took them a while.
One day I'm gonna meet Brazil
Come are you from?

Africans we need to unite
We really need to.
Just Africans huh don't forget about us in America
Brazil is new African. Black population in Brazil is 97 millions 43 percent
Shut up. Brazil is a diversified country. Half the population is white and a large part is brown, around 8-10% are black, not to mention that we have the highest concentration of Japanese outside of Japan and colonies of Germans, Italians and Chinese. And I do not say this because I'm ashamed because I love African culture in general they brought a rich and wonderful culture that European countries will never feel.
VASX . it's not true! If the Africans in Brazil represented 10 per cent of the population, the total population of Brazil would be close to nine hundred million people, which is not the case!
Brazil is not a New Africa!!
We dont have only black peolple here!!! The TV Shows only two States of Brazil in that majority is black...We have 26 States here!!!
Vcs Americanos são preconceituosos
I love it
Who were the first or original indigenous people to occupy the land? When did colonization begin with white settlers? And didn't this also happen in countries like Cuba, Dominicana Repbulica and Haiti?
Bianca Barrera yep
It's happened all over Latin America
When I think of slavery I usually think as an unfortunate set of events that happened years ago. Learning that Brazil was one of the last nations to abolish slavery was very surprising. Several laws were attempted or even were enacted in years that were a lot more recent than others. Different presidents attempted to help abolish discrimination in 2003 and 2015 but it was not completely abolished. I am not sure if it was the government or system they had in place but it really makes me wonder why its taken so long for slaver and discrimination to slowly be abolished.
Discrimination is already a crime in Brazil.

@Narciso de Almeida Aren't you the same person that said Africans sold their own people. Make up your mind. The Bible clearly states Israel would be scattered amongst the nation's. Negroes are descendant of Shem Africans are descendants of Ham.

Yes, because brazilian people are a mix of every race. Luckily we don't descend only from africans, plenty of brazilians also descend from italian, spanish, dutch, german, korean, japanese, portuguese, polish and ukrainian.

Brazilian tribes enslaved each other before the Europeans even arrived. Brazil gained independence from Portugal in 1822. However, it took 66 years before Brazil abolished slavery in 1888. You can't blame that on the Portuguese.
tribe of asher!!
chambers1977 your right they are Israelites. Not Africans. Africans are Hamites
No, just Judah/Benjamin as they were the only two tribes enslaved and shipped across the world, the others are still in Africa, that 12 tribe chart is false doctrine
