    Aloha Amanda & Felix, what a wonderful festival, mahalo for showing this. Last year while I was visiting Oahu, I remember there was some kind of Japanese festival going on and I regret not attending it. The food looked great and the dancing/drums was so much fun watching too. I hope you continue to show all of these great ethnic festivals going on out there.

    Obon is a part of the temple celebrations. We always visited my family on Maui during their obon festival. Maui food is a little different. Shave ice. Chow fun. Teriyaki stick. You need a hapi coat or yukata for next year! Thanks for sharing!

      @@AmandaFelixEats check the schedule for next year. The temples usually have practice Wednesday and Thursday before. They explain the songs and the motions making it easier to remember. You can call to find out when practice is. The dances are often the same and people go every weekend. This year Honolulu magazine has a listing. Happy dancing!

    Fun video. Maybe for next year you can do a couple of the local Obons on Oahu (there are a bunch). They are great fun. We are from Seattle, but we have been to a couple on Oahu (Haleiwa and Aiea). The food is usually made by church volunteers so definitely not gourmet, but usually pretty good. And there is a local Taiko/music/dance group that we saw in Aiea that does Okinawan stuff that is amazing!

    This is a big deal on Kauai. But like in the old days, the Hongwanji on Kauai still does the food , rather than invite vendors to pay for a tent. The food variety brings in more people, attracts more vendors, and allows the church to have more cultural/religious demonstrations and booths to explain modern Buddhism to the people there.

    I don’t understand..? How can Hawaiians celebrate Japanese culture after the bomb of Pearl Harbor, don’t get me wrong I love Japanese culture. and how can a true Hawaii stand for the flag that’s actually a British flag, a country who took over and cancelled the Queen….🤔🤔

    • @keithfreitas2983
      @keithfreitas2983 Рік тому

      Most of these people are part or full Japanese descendants and eve non Japanese. There were many Japanese immigrants in Hawaii before Pearl Harbor and many had children (Nisei) which became U S Citizens by birth in the Territory of Hawaii. These are American Citizens celebrating their culture just like other cultures in America like the Chinese, Portuguese, French and Mexican Americans do, just to name a few. Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Nation of Japan. Also many of these people's parents were put in Internment Camps during the war and many proved tbeir loyalty to America by joining the Military like the 442 Regimental Combat Team. The most decorated Combat unit in US history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/442nd_Infantry_Regiment_(United_States). My father inlaw was born in California and his famiy was put into interment in Arizona losing their business and property. He joined the Army at 18 during the Korean war. He was a true American just like my Portuguese father who was born in Hawaii and at Pearl Harbor during the attack. Yes, you are right about Pearl Harbor and the US overthrowing Hawaii. There could be a lot of hate both ways and there still is, but not by those that went through it.
