'But' make more sense. The title is Hero part two, the lyric implies that this is not his first time doing this "the wreckage I've been trying to protect", and the won't die in the end is supported by "immortal whenever you're near".
Although he could run, hide, play pretend, he knows that he has something to fight for, therefore "but this is not the story where the hero dies in the end." He will persevere
