    Translation and meaning
The setting of the song is one of Rain Ceremony (Mukwerera).
Context to song is necessary otherwise nothing make sense: It is like telling little green man with disproportionately big heads and eyes that my daughter is sad that Santa stole her tooth that she left under the pillow for the tooth fairy to give to the elves to made magic dust.
Now, in Shona Religion of the people of Zimbabwe and surrounding countries, people believe that Mwari, is the supreme creator (God) and when people die, their souls enter the spirit world, a world between that of the living and the realm of God. The only way that the living can communicate to God is through the spirits of their ancestors in the spirit world. That’s, when the Shona pray, they pray to Mwari via the spirits of their ancestors who intercede between the world of the living and realm of God. The ancestral spirits are protective of their living descendants.
So, how do people pass their prayers to Mwari? They need to summon an ancestral spirit from the spirit world to intercede: How is this done? It is done via Bira (Prayer gathering) where they play mbira in order to Pira (Pass on a request or grievance) and naturally, drink a traditional brew and probably slaughter a beast for the gathering: Then, they need Mhondoro, a Priestess / Priest to host the spirit of the ancestor being summoned by the music. Priests are specific and serve specific duties depending on what outcome is desired from Mwari /God: for example; war, famine, epidemics and pandemics. In this case, the people are praying for the rains. They need to use specific Mhondoro / priests for this. In this case, Water / Rain Priests (Mhondoro Dzemvura / Chembere Dzemvura and Harahwa Dzemvura).
At the time in the song when the water spirit being summoned has inhabited the Priest/ Priestess, they start saying, “Zvamauya zvanaka, Paita Mhondoro Dzemvura pano”. This is to say, your presence honours us: we have the appropriate vassals to host your spirit. Usually, once the Priestess / Priest has been possessed by the spirit, the assume the spirit’s characteristics particularly the voice and they are no longer on control of their body until the spirit has left. They can then explain what’s what: in this case, why the rains might be late of and what needs to be done to make them come and so forth.
The song is sung metaphorically such that direct translation would appear meaningless and nonsensical: The best I can do is to say: He speaks about how wild animals in this case, represented by a monkey can live off maize crop that is silently borrowed from humans and thrive. However, he does not show animosity towards the thieving monkey in his words but only admiration of its cunningness: what he is saying in essence however is that, without the rains, even innocent wild animals that might have not wronged the Gods also suffer if the rains do not come. It is as if he is pleading for rains on behalf of the innocent animals yet knowing fully that the rains if they come, would benefit the likely sinful humans as well.
The reason he does not show anger at the thieving animal is to show his good nature in the presence of the spirit from whom he is begging for the rains and in a way promises to share the gains from the rains should the prayer wishes be granted I believe. He praises the quality of the Mhondoro / Priests that have been assembled as A1 quality lest the Spirit is not convinced of the offering and ceremony and fail to show.
In the end, it seems people have been granted their wish and revelling in the waters now abundant. Their prayers have been answered. Unfortunately, some nuances would be lost in translation. Please feel free to comment
