I just love watching the swirls as the mica powder mixes with the alcohol! And I like how you jazzed up the wrapping with those beads, a creative touch.
These are awesome.. thank you for sharing I'm a librarian and sharing a bit of magic through the library is phenomenal.. Thank you for taking the time to put these together ❤️ it really is very much appreciated 😊
Gorgeous as always! ❤️I really love the obscure stuff. I would love to see your take on the magical film developing solution that Collin Creevey talk about in COS chapter 6.
How very clever! I love the color combinations and the embellishments! Thank you so much!! (Now if only you could make a real version of this. I could definitely use it! 😉) Thanks! 😊👍💗
I have a project i want to try, It involves making the potions from Harry Potter and putting them in a light up case. Will the light color the potion more green if it is under this potion due to the settled mica, will it not heavily effect it? also, how would you go about putting a metal bead or something inside to allow someone to "magically" stir the potion? (Like a magnet mixer with a remote wand or something)
It won’t really effect it light wise. Most magnetic stirrers will only run one bead at a time, so I don’t know that there’s a great way for you to do multiple spinning pills inside of a box. I do a potion spinner in this video where I hide it in a book box: ua-cam.com/video/FoZNmIeWy4s/v-deo.html
What is a good green/yellow recipe? I’m doing some campaign awards for my D&D group. It centered around The King in Yellow and Wyrdstone (green crystals)
May I ask why you use running alcohol over water, & why you mix the mics into the alcohol on the side..? I've made potion bottles before, but with water, & just kinda gauge things by eye. Does it help incorporate the mica better or something..? Thanks so much! 💕
I use alcohol or distilled water with a couple drops of glycerin to keep things from growing in it. If you use regular tap water over time it will get “yucky”. I personally prefer the swirls and lack of bubbles you get with the alcohol too. You can either mix the mica in it or on the side, it doesn’t matter, people like to watch it swirl in which is why I did it separate. I hope that helps 😊
Love your color changing potions. I’m going to have my campers make some for the Ilvermorny School themed camp I’m leading in a couple weeks. Quick question about the powder. Would edible cake luster dust do the same thing as mica powder or will it give a different effect?
Unfortunately the edible kind of luster dust does not work the same. Mica powder is pretty safe though it’s one of the key ingredients they use in makeup.

@@CookingandCraftChick thank you! I'm so glad you replied! And you don't need the glycerin with the alcohol correct? I'm definitely going to be using the alcohol now!
Hi this message might be too late considering the release date: but I recently got into potion making, and I've noticed that after a few days, the jars get a bit foggy/small bubbles&smudges start forming on the inside of the glass 😢. Do you have any advice? Ps I use tap water because a different creator said using regular tap water would still last a couple of years so I'm confused. Tysm❤
That is why. Tap water gets gross over time. ☹️Distilled water and a tiny bit of glycerin is what you can do. My tips and tricks video will give you some insights. I’m sorry that is happening to your bottles. ua-cam.com/video/_blpHmSHt1c/v-deo.html
When you first added the mica powder into the orange the effect was mesmerizing! I wonder if the orange will change color over time with a lot of shaking - will it get darker or muddier?
It shouldn’t. I made a test bottle several weeks ago and it is still the same color. Actually the longer it sits the more “clear” orange it gets because all of the residual mica settles leaving it even clearer.
I use alcohol or distilled water with a couple of glycerin to keep things from growing in it. If you use regular tap water over time it will get “yucky”. I personally prefer the swirls and lack of bubbles you get with the alcohol too.
If I were to make this mixture would I be able to sit it in my china cabinet after Halloween and reuse it again next year? Or would I have to make a new mixture every year? Just wondering how long the mixture lasts so I know if I should just dump it and wash the bottle after Halloween? Thanks Love your video!!
I followed this video to the T, but my color mix/mica powder looks WAY different when it mixes in with the food colored rubbing alcohol. Are there any other additives im not seeing?
I just tried making a color changing potion with amber base with green glitter, to be "Wyvern Venom," unfortunately the alcohol took up the color of the green mica powder and has discolored more green. How can I prevent this in future potions?
You might have used too much mica powder. What kind of mica powder did you use? You might try putting the mica in clear alcohol and see if it discolors it. If it does your mica might have dye in it too. If it doesn’t discolor it then you may have just used too much. I test my color combos in smaller bottles before making it a final potion. This might be helpful for you for future potions.
@@CookingandCraftChick Thank you so much! I didn't use much of the powder, the swirl is very thin, but has a nice effect. I will test the powders for discoloration. Fingers crossed
@@CookingandCraftChick Reiterating my thanks. Turns out the powders I bought have dye in them. They still swirl very nice, but do deposit a bit of color into the alcohol. I'll have to put off the color changing potions for a bit
This is just a Betty Crocker orange food coloring you get in a neon pack. Most grocery stores carry it. Wilton also has an orange food coloring. If you can’t find that you can always do 1 drop of red and 1 drop of yellow food coloring to achieve orange.
This may be a stupid question, but can you add too much Mica powder? It seems like my potions don't swirl as much as yours. Or maybe for a very short time in the beginning.
You can add too much. But to get it to swirl a little longer you can always add a little bit of glycerin to “thicken” it up. It will stop swirling and settle in between getting shaken up.
Yes and no. It depends on the mica powder and the colors. If you check out my dash of pox video I use black mica powder in it. Trial and error will be your friend.
Not really. I use the rubber corks and I keep them in a room temperature room away from sun. All of these things keep the evaporation to a minimum. I’ve had some of my potions for over 6 years, and they still look the same. If you’re worried about it you can always opt to use distilled water with a tiny bit of glycerin.

I love your color-changing potions! The Wiggenweld is my favorite, but this is a close second behind it! Love these tutorials!
I love this! I think I will add some twine to the bottom so you don’t see the mica when it’s settled!
I thought about that too.
Great idea. My brain went wild with how many ways this could be adapted to body sprays ❤ thanks for posting!
So cool! I've been collecting glass bottles for years and now I have something to make with them 😍
This is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for the tutorial! I'll feature them in my next alchemist video for sure :D
Another Fun one! The color changing idea is so cool. Can't wait to give it a try!!!
Came here from Articulate Design ASMR. This was really interesting to watch. Love your creations.

Am I missing the link/card for the how to wrap the top with twine? I can't find it anywhere here or on any of the other videos.
Another awesome poition😊 Love the colour shifting and the label matches so perfectly. Not a fan of the new timelapse music though.
I do different music for each potion, I was going for something “invigorating” 😊

Absolutely lovely potion!
But I wonder, is there a reason for using rubbing alcohol or distilled water instead of normal (drinking) water?
Regular water over time will get “yucky”. The alcohol or distilled water with glycerin keeps things from growing in the water.
That makes sense. Thank you so much for the quick reply!
this is the question I've been looking for!

You can however sometimes it can make some mica powders clump when it settles

I’d do yellow base liquid and green mica. Sounds like fun 😊

These are really cool to look at. How long does it take for the shimmer and swirls to settle after shaking it up?
It depends on the base (alcohol or distilled water) and the mica but usually about 30 minutes or so.

Instead of a rubber cork can you also use a stopper? Like a glass one with those rubber ridges (i dont know what they are called lol)
Yes you definitely can. They don’t seal as tight as a rubber cork as far as evaporation is concerned but they definitely work.
