- Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, born on February 3, 1809, in Hamburg, Germany, was a prodigious composer, pianist, and conductor of the Romantic era. Coming from a wealthy and culturally influential family, Mendelssohn was introduced to music at an early age and displayed exceptional talent. His grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn, was a renowned philosopher, while his father, Abraham, was a banker.
Recognizing his musical gifts, Mendelssohn's parents provided him with a comprehensive education in music, languages, literature, and the arts. He received piano lessons from his mother and studied composition under the tutelage of Carl Friedrich Zelter, a prominent musician and friend of the family. Mendelssohn's musical abilities flourished rapidly, and he began composing and performing publicly in his early teens.
In 1829, at the age of 20, Mendelssohn conducted a revival performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. Matthew Passion," which had been largely forgotten at the time. This monumental event sparked a widespread revival of interest in Bach's music and firmly established Mendelssohn as a leading figure in the musical world.
Throughout his career, Mendelssohn composed a diverse range of works, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, oratorios, and choral compositions. His compositions, often characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and expressive qualities, exemplified the Romantic spirit.
Mendelssohn's best-known works include his "Violin Concerto in E minor," the "Hebrides Overture" (also known as "Fingal's Cave"), and his "Italian Symphony." He also composed the incidental music for William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream," which features the famous "Wedding March" that is still played at weddings to this day.
In addition to his compositional prowess, Mendelssohn was an accomplished conductor. He served as the music director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, Germany, from 1835 until his death. Under his leadership, the orchestra achieved great acclaim and became one of the finest in Europe.
Tragically, Mendelssohn's life was cut short. He suffered from poor health throughout his later years and died at the age of 38 on November 4, 1847. Despite his relatively short life, Mendelssohn's contributions to music were immense. His compositions continue to captivate audiences with their beauty, elegance, and emotional depth, ensuring his enduring legacy as one of the most important composers of the Romantic era.

Mendelssohn was a very talented composer and he worked with Schumann for almost all his life. Sadly, he died at the very young age of 38 of a fatal stroke.
BRAVO MENDELSSOHN!
didnt know he died so early! What a blessing to this world he is
I think your time stamps are off.
Gran concierto. se. escucha hasta la fecha. 🇲🇽

To me, his violin concerto is the greatest among violin concertos. I first heard it while I was sitting in a National Guard army jeep when I was still in high school. It was heavenly and inspired me to pursue violin playing. Now at age 80 I can say I can play this piece with ease.
+Wing Low an incredible insipiration for me...

Felix Mendelssohn truly was a visionary, cuz his music speaks louder than words.
His music does speak louder than words I can say as a fact.
Happy birthday Mendelssohn, you shall live long in our memories. Thanks for all the glorious music.
His life is timeless within our civilization.
Aah a moment when I discover my own comment from the past! What a pleasure meeting older me
He and his superbly talented sister both died far too young. But their work will continue as long as people love great music.
My grandma was supposedly related to him. I still have her violin.

Listen to (and importantly watch) Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor (Op. 25) Yuja Wang, Kurt Masur. Absolutely brilliant!
You've heard him before, Felix Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" in C major, generally being played on a church pipe organ.
I feel it too.
Mendelssohn reminds me of a calm and more careful Vivaldi
Mendelssohn's music evokes mental images like few other composers.
Classical music is underrated
Music so beautiful and surprisingly humble and non pretentious..
Genius ! Sad he passed away so young !
True, but it was the 1840s haha. Mid-30s wasn't too shabby back then.
@@xglitch97 Even during that time, it would have been considered young. It's a total myth that people didn't live very long in earlier times. I have an original antique book from 1839 (a biography about Alexander Pope) and they describe someone in their 30's and 40's as being young.
Rien n'est plus beau, plus prenant et très romantique, que la musique classique d'antan, où l'on sent les capacités des mélomanes de cette époque assez lointaine.
his VIOLIN CONCERTO is the best piece of classical music ever

I don't know what to say...This is the real music...the real soul language...💖
Mendelsohn, your VIOLIN CONCERTO is the best among all the Violin Concertos I heard in the world. To think, you cant even play Violin but are able to compose such a brilliant Masterpiece??... baffled me big time. You are beyond Brilliant, Mendelsohn. Thank you for all the wonderful Music you composed.
My great-Great etc Grandfather, a violinist Virtuoso and Composer Ferdinand David, who was born in the same room as Mendelssohn but a year later helped him with score and arrangement of Op64 which took 5 years to complete and played the first public concert of this work 1845 in Leipzig with David as soloist! I just love it!
As famous as Mendelssohn is, he is still underrated. He ranks with the best, and we know who they are.
You are right and wrong. He is the best. The Leipzig conservatory he founded was the center for musical education for the world. Where would we be if Mendelsshon-Bartholdy didn't rediscover Bach's music.
Hebrides, Fingal's cave. My favorite
So true, re Mendelssohn being under-rated. His dying at 38 didn't help him develop his legacy. But still, the violin concerto, A Midsummer Night's Dream Suite, and Symphonies # 3 and 4, ensure his place in the pantheon of the world's finest composers.
In my opinion the best are Mendelssohn, Schumann, and of course Beethoven and Mozart. I couldn't pick a favourite out of those 4 at gunpoint. But of course, that's just my (subjective) opinion :)
Perhaps Tchaikovsky deserves inclusion? What a genius across a broad spectrum of music from ballet masterpieces like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, to opera, especially Eugene Onegin, to his symphonic masterpieces.
I am in awe of Tchaikovsky's range of genius!
Beautiful music, I started listening when I so little
Coming from mostly listening to Chopin, Debussy and Rachmaninoff, a whole new window has just opened for me after listening to this!!
+tubehows4life Look, no hate or anything, but if you find these classical geniuses "boring", then why the F*CK are you here commenting stuff like this? Spend your time listening to the music you like then!
+tubehows4life I mean, people have been listening to their music for well over a hundred years so I think it's safe to say that plenty of people have heard of them..

when listening to Mendesohn it's hard to believe there was anyone greater; his stunningly unique music just magically possesses the soul in a way no othe composer does.

My favorite composer
..romanticismo puro, excelente, docientos años no es nada...para la música.
Distinguished composer. Briliant.
I introduced the famous composers to my granddaughters every night since I am sleeping with them in the same bed . Corona virus positive effect. When we got to mendelson they asked for him again and again. I got moref familiar with his music and realized his genius. He uses all the families of the orchestra in a unique way and within every group he creates dynamic and magic. There is flow and contrast and gentleness and drama....so well crafted. He deserved more recognition like the other famous composers from Bach to shostakovich....before andafter.
Is it true that Felix copied his sister's work into his own. How much did Fanny and Felix compose their work individually, please shed light into this information.
@@valsammajoseph421 Are you asking me Joseph??

Il n'y à qu'un Stradivarius pour me faire pleurer pour la beauté du son !
Mendelssohn is one of the best composer I love. His Elijah oratorio is so awesome and so difficult. When I sing it with my choir church group, it took more that 3 months to learn it.
Agree that Elijah is awesome. I sang it as a 16-year-old and it marked me indelibly for my whole life (I'm 56 now). I wouldn't say it's difficult though - yes you need to be a competent singer to sing it (and as a male voice you need to have a good range - I sang 1st Tenor at 16, I could just about manage 1st Bass now).
If you want something difficult from the 19th Century, try Noenia by Brahms.
@@steveonions1192 wow that's awesome! The first time I sang Elijah is when I'm 30. Kind of regret it to not learn it when I'm still a teenager.
What a masterpiece!
Every time I hear it I feel worth living.
It makes me "taller". Every void in my heart is filled in with memories and passion.
So many images come to my mind. Mostly during winter at night while it is windy and me walking alone in an upward tile paved road listening to that. Amazing. Great motivator for every good action.
The Italian symphony is his masterpiece in my mind. It's energizing.
I agree.
It is one of the greatest symphonies ever written.
Is he italian?
@@badalbertocastillo2779 No, that was just the name of the music. "Italy" or "Italian". He was born in Germany.
In all the pictures of Mendelssohn I see a good-natured, happy individual. I think that he is a good example of extreme genius not leading to tragedy :)

I used to study to this music back in school. Got all my As in the final exam; I think the music had a part to play in it. :)
I use to write and it's amazing too.
I have to admit that in order for me to do cooking & house cleaning I must listen to 'beauty'. When I'm working or researching topics, the classical music relaxes my senses and it stimulates clever and great ideas and projects!
I find it strange how people listen to music to study, because when I do, I just end up getting distracted by the music and daydreaming or something.
goodie goodie
Unbelievably rich and soothing. It is a great experience.
Yes, wonderful.
I also love his piano concerto no.1, played by this 10 year Russian old genius, Alexandra Dovgan, on you tube.
She made me love Mendelssohn.
She is in his soul, and her virtuosity is breathtaking.
And a beautiful, elegant child, in a very elegant concert hall to complete this marvellous experience.
Majestic, an absolutely beautiful way to start your day. Puts a smile on my face that normally wouldn't be there. Jesus first, then Felix!
This recording stems from 1984 and was performed by Cho-Liang Lin. The conductor was Michael Tilson Thomas.
It was this recording that drew me into classical music. It is still one of my favourites.

Great spirit of the music Felix Mendelssohn
Had always been a huge fan of Niccolo Paganini’s violin compositions...then along comes Mendelssohn! Wow!
Of the three major violin concertos, I think Mendelssohn's song is the best. The composition of the music, the beauty of the melody which develops gracefully, the tone of richness etc. are superior in all respects. The high degree of completion is incomparable.
Magnifique !
I ADORREEE MENDELSSOHN!!!!!!!!!!!! He's my first favourite composer together with his sister Fanny Mendelssohn and this concerto is one of my favourite pieces!!!!!!!!! IT IS SOOOOOOOOO SAD THAT HE DIED SOOOOOO YOUNG!!!!!! HE DESERVED TO LIVE UNTIL TODAY AND LONG AFTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this classical masterpiece. This is the best way I can get through my work days.

Just visited his house in Leipzig. Didn't know much about him. Now is my new love to keep discovering. He was an amazingly talented watercolorist as well, you can see his work at his house. He always brought his watercolor set where ever he traveled to.
+Santiago Rodriguez He's a german treasure.
+Sternenlicht Wagner who was jealous of his talents said some particularly nasty things about him. Wagner was Hitler`s favorite composer. This is my favorite violin concerto.
You can be both Jewish and German. You can be both Spanish and Jewish also.
+Sternenlicht yes. Of Jewish origin.
+Sternenlicht I agree. He also rediscovered J.S. Bach who had been forgotten until then. He was converted to Christianity by his father, because in those days it was impossible to proceed in life otherwise. BTW, his sister Fanny was a wonderful musician, not less than he was. Unfortunately, it was impossible for a woman to have a career outside the kitchen... Just like Clara Schuman Robert Schuman's wife.
