Can I ask what course you’re deciding to pursue/what ur majoring in? I’m interested in an editing career, but I don’t really know what courses would equip me best

@@myn9070 I'm personally going into English literature, but I'm sure whatever english course you go for should be fine, depending on what genre you want to work on!

The desire to go into publishing has become greater everyday for me, but I do have a question. The BA degree I received isn't exactly relevant to publishing (perhaps closer to journalism, if anything). How can I stand out when there are swarms of English Lit. or Creative Writing majors applying for the same editorial assistant position?

I'm by no means an expert but I have friends in this industry and they say work experience is invaluable for applicants. Also if you can enter contests with your own work so you present yourself as someone who really understands the process of writing and the journey to get published. There's really no right or wrong way tbh but hope I helped at least a little x

I know you posted this a while ago, but if you have the opportunity to, there are universities that offer publishing specific MA degrees. Another option is the "Get into publishing" course (usually 3-4 days). Look at getintobookpublishing co uk :) And of course experience, in bookshops or publishing houses, anything you can get your hands on!!

Authors are always looking for Beta readers. Agree to do that. It rarely pays but you can use that as experience. Also you can work independently and agree to edit peoples book.

They still edit on paper? In this day and age?? As someone who works as an editor (in a different area of publishing) I cannot imagine doing my job on paper.

When you edit in different forms you notice things you would miss if you stayed in one format

I have written ten sci fi fictions. How can I get a platform to publish these manuscripts through Penguin Random House? In 2014, Penguin published an anthology of true life stories titled 'Something Happened On The Way To Heaven 'edited by Sudha Murty. The 11th no story is written by me.

i would advise you to get a literary agent, i’ve published an academic book just last month and have found the publication process intriguing. if you’ve already edited a book for a reputable personality, try to reach out to their publication team and converse with them on basis of getting yours published

Penguin is big publishing industry but very thin door to enter. Limited to fix idea like feminism and letting not open the door for other vast variety ideas.

These people haven’t got a clue of what will become a best selling book. Self publish your work it will save you a lot of heartache from these dreadful people. They suppress the industry. Traditional publishers are outdated. Always at the first instance think about self publishing rather than wasting time and effort going through these publishing companies.

They just have too many potential works to choose from and will always therefore miss things and disappoint somebody.
Agree with your advice for alternative options though.
