    Thank you so much for a good quality video. I will state, you're plumb lucky, though, that even with machinist style safety glasses, without wearing a full face shield, while using an angle grinder, you havent got multi-scars on your face and neck from the hot metal you're removing. I've worked metal all my life and have seen folks that started out with the same safety ideas..."safety glasses are enough...I don't like all that junk hanging in front of me...or...it gets in my way...until someone has to go to the emergency room when they ground toward a gusset and it spit back on them and they were burnt their face all up. You guy are great!...and LUCKY !!!

    that jib crane is stronger than really needed for 500 lbs, it is a nice job, at final adjustment, the most important is to align the pivot axis very plumb to avoid rotational non desired movement.

    Is it just me or did the mast deflect when the guy hung off it?
    I watched it a couple times and that’s what it looks like. If so, I would try and rig some kind of support to the top of the mast just under the bushings.

    • @KevinDay
      @KevinDay 4 роки тому

      Cantilever beams will always deflect SOME under a load... Just because you can see it doesn't mean it's bad. I'm sure the pipe is still FAR from plastic deformation under the loads he's rated it for.

    • @tatehalpin5686
      @tatehalpin5686 4 роки тому

      @@KevinDay Its not so much an issue with plastic deformation as deflection, when the jib sags and your beam trolley runs to the end of it deflecting even more. Or in this case, right off the end, as it looks like there isn't a stop for the trolley.

    Nice job, but you need to do a load test on this jib. It should carry at least 3x its rating at full extension without sag or buckle or collapse. You don't hoist all the way up. Just an inch off the floor will prove it.

    • @adamkalman6011
      @adamkalman6011 6 років тому

      bullshit it does not need to lift 3X its rating maybe 15% more just for safety margin and added a little UNCOMMON SENSE and you are good to go

    • @tigerseye73
      @tigerseye73 6 років тому +1

      This jib was built by someone with no engineering background in jib crane design requirements or safety. Its totally obvious. At the very least, he should have had it inspected by a certified crane inspector or company. It would never pass. Your'e the one with the bullshit opinion.

      @@adamkalman6011 for lift a minimum of 4/1 safety for the structure must be applied per CMAA and ANSI if your really want to get technical. There is a good chance this guy gets sued when this kills someone and they say I learned to build it from this guy on the internet.

    • @davidbird4771
      @davidbird4771 5 років тому

      @@mrdavidurquhart Lateral torsional buckling of the cantilever boom is a hugh problem that is not directly related to the bending stresses in the steel. Also, it seemed to deflect too much at the top when one of the helpers swung on it. A failure of this structure would probably take place very suddenly, without warning, and that is the most dangerous kind of failure.

  • @scotty362100
    @scotty362100 5 років тому +6

    The mast seriously deflects with a 160lb man swinging from it!!! No way in hell I would put "500lbs" on that death trap.

    To prevent warping when you welded that base up you should have welded IT to the table. 6or 8 good tacks around the perimeter. Then do all your welding, let cool, and cut free. No warpage.

      UHMW - Ultra High Molecular Weight - similar to Teflon - it's a high density plastic that works very well as a bearing/bushing in moderate load applications. (Now that you know what it's called - ) you can google it - it's not terribly expensive, and is pretty cool stuff.

      It's actually in the polyethylene family instead of the "teflon" family. Cheaper than delrin but good strength, machine-ability and low friction. good stuff for wear parts that need to be tougher than teflon.

    That big crane only lifts 500 lbs? The one I got from the big box store holds a lot more and is half the size. I agree with another viewer that the money spent on materials would out way the quality plus the labor and time away from other projects. I'm just saying...
