- MICROPHONE COMPARISON // Are you interested in recording your harp for family and friends? Wondering which microphone to use to give you great results? In this video I am going to compare 6 different microphones with my Dusty Strings FH36S harp.
I recorded an original composition called "The Land of Dreams". I set up all six mics and played through the piece once. You'll be able to hear as I switch from mic to mic during the recording.

Blue Yeti Nano sounded the richest and fullest to me.
I just picked up the adapter to make it possible to connect Blue Yeti to iPhone. It works beautifully and sounds great.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic I think you should use the Stereo setting on the yeti mic. It sounds better in Stereo than mono.

What a great video! This was exactly what I was looking for while researching microphones for music lessons. Wearing headphones, the Shure MV88 was my favorite, with beautifully atmospheric, and rich stereo sound, like listening in-person live. The iPhone11 similarly had great stereo separation, but the sound wasn't as rich. All the others sound fine/good, but they all sound "monophonic" and not atmospheric at all. The Yeti nano has a very pleasant sound despite little stereo separation, so that's probably why so many podcasters seem to use it; if giving Skype/Zoom lessons over laptop speakers would probably be fine. I may get the more expensive $130 Yeti that has a "stereo" mode that the Yeti nano does not have. What did you use to record the spoken intro and ending -- I'm guessing either the Shure or iPhone11, given how (with headphones) your voice sounds so realistic? Also, beautiful harp playing, many thanks for making this video.

I think the Blue Yeti sounds very good as well! I just picked up the adapter so I can connect the Blue to my iPhone and I think I found my new "tutorial" set-up! Easy peasy!
Thanks for another extremely helpful video Anne. The inbuilt mic is probably best and the Yeti has most warmth, but I think I'll go for the MV88 just for ease of use - no wires :)

What a great video! So helpful! I'm kind of amazed at how my favorite was actually the iPhone 11. Areyh Frankfurter had also mentioned in his recording class that the iPhone is really amazingly good for a demo level recording. And it's so easy! We're lucky to have such great technology available to us now days. Thanks for this clear and informative video!

They're all lovely. (as the sheet music is lovely too!) For me it's a toss-up between the MV88 and the Yeti. They seem to capture the room acoustics quite well too. The iPhone is an honorable third. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Have you ever used a Zoom H4? I've used it in my choral work and guitar playing but now I'll have to go try it with the harp. I imagine it will not disappoint! ~Lisa
I don't have the Zoom H4 in my collection. But definitely one to consider especially for recording on the go!

Blue Yeti nano
I was happily surprised with the Blue Yeti! If I can figure out how to connect it to my phone I'll use it so much more. Right now I'm only using it for Zoom lessons.
Anne, i also really liked the last one, your harp pickup. I think my Heartland has one of these installed...I wasn’t sure what that was for 🙄

I liked most, first no. 4 Blue Yeti Nano, second no 6. K&K Big Twin pick up and last no 2 Shure MV88,. The Rodeo I didn"t like at all. Thank you for sharing, Anne. This is an insight and I got an orientation.

From the short clip I would choose the Shure and the Yeti. Though the internal pick up did seem to pick up more of the richness of the lower tones and perhaps with some adjustments might do well also. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
I agree, the pickup needs some low mids filtered out, but it has the richness of the lower tones that the other mics are missing. Much easier to take away than to add!
That was great! I like the ATM33R best overall but the Yeti was rich and warm and a close second.

Dear Anne, your video "comes as called". (A language-pattern here in Germany). It just fits to one of my goals for the new year...First: It's good to know, that you can have satisfying results with simple equipment. You can use what you have. It's not important to buy expensive new "stuff". But yes, I have two favorites, I can't decide. I repeated listening to this video several times, yesterday and today: I mean Nr. 4 and 5. As I watched your recent video from today, I understand your intention mixing Nr. 5 and 6. Very interesting!

Thank you for your Music and your Videos. I want to say how very much I appreciate your beautiful compositions. I hate to give Iphone any more props than they already have and get but.... I did really like the resonance that surrounded each note and found that the inherent balance of Treble and Bass mix was what I personally like to achieve in my Vocal mic presentations and monitor. Although the differences were nearly negligible in the others, I did like the audio-technica 2nd best.

Thanks Cheryl! Isn't it nice to know that you don't have to get really fancy to get a good quality audio? All of them need some post-processing to achieve a little more magic. You must have a favorite mic that you use for vocals.
Thank you so much for your reply! Well it's been a while since I've had a choice, I usually use whatever is provided in live situations. Shure sm-57 was my go to. I am not as sophisticated in my recordings as you are. My at home recordings are more documentation of works in progress and my other attempts don't measure up to my own standards and certainly not yours. It's good to know that iphone 11 has such a great mic. I'm always in a hurry so that is convenient.

Thanks so much and for your efforts in bringing these comparisons. As an audio engineer, im always looking for better results and microphones for different applications including harp but what I did find was the distances matter quite a lot with the choice of microphone. if you were to place the road videomicro at the12 inch distance from the soundboard it really does come into its own and I ended up a 3D printed stereo bracket for two of them which sound incredible. I actually like all the others as well but when it comes down to it, the harp so require a stereo field to convey the warmth of its acoustic space. The bass of the k&k is so much purer and i was going to try a contact for the bottom end, low pass eq so bass would be in mono and then a stereo ortf at approx 3ft.
So far, the best internal system i have heard has been Nadia Birkenstock who uses a custom contact but is a 3 point in stereo...first heard on 'a trip to the islands'
I use many mics...shure, blue, neumann, aea, rode etc but i find each mic needs its own particular time to find the sweet spot.

Anne Crosby Gaudet Actually I also have a Blue Yeti (regular, not Nano) so all the videos until about 3 months ago were recorded using the stereo mode on the Blue Yeti. Then starting with the “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” video, all the subsequent videos were recorded using the Tascam DR05. I found that it’s a lot easier to set up and lighter to carry especially when I record outdoors. I found that it makes the harps sound sweet and tender. Also, Blue Yeti is very sensitive and picks up a lot of the minute ambient sounds whereas the Tascam screens out much of the unwanted noise.
6 and 3 sound the best in my little ear buds and both these are the mics I've been thinking of purchases:) Thank you so much.
Ah, the pickup and the Rode? The Rode actually does an even better job when it is much closer to me. I had it set on my camera about 3 feet away for this video. I usually place it on a boom stand just over my head when I'm doing tutorial videos where I'm playing and talking. I've very happy with the K&K Big Twin pickup (I have used others), though I usually filter out some of the low mids in post processing. Are you going to do some video or audio recording soon?

Great video! I've been watching some of your videos lately as I just got my first harp, a little fireside cardboard, and you're a great resource for a beginner!
I've just recorded a couple of little elementary songs with a Sure SM58 and a Bluebird, which I use for my acoustic guitars, but all your recordings are so much better because you're such a great player. 😂

I really like the sound of the pickup. I used to record my old harp (DS Ravenna) with the pickup and one condenser mic and it really sounded nice. I'm thinking about getting a pickup fitted in my crescendo now!
I'm very happy with the K&K Big Twin pickup. My studio is fairly noisy with local traffic etc, so the pickup helps.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic yeah that’s the same for me, I live next to a busy road and a train station 🤦🏻♀️ I’ve found taping up my window has helped and also pointing the mics away from the noise (it took me a while to realise that one lol).

I was actually quite impressed with the iPhone mic. I have the K&K dual pick up but I have not done any interfacing to garage band. How is this done? Can I do this via iPad Pro?my computer has been down for quite awhile and to be honest I haven’t really missed it except when it comes to this kind of stuff. What do you mean when you say interface?
As far as mics go my least favorite was the one “Shure” mic which was picking up to much peripheral white noise and was holding a lot of treble sound. The Blue Yeti Nano was beautiful and had a rich deep tone.The camera mic seamed a bit muted and flat. But the Audio Technical condenser mic which came in after your Blue Yeti Nano, had practically the same sound and was a smooth transition. I kept my eye closed for the most part. I have a condenser mic, and the K&K dual piece up. I only have the lunchbox reverb amp. But getting the pick up to my iPad in garage band is what I’m illiterate on! Maybe you could do a follow up video on this and how you do that for those of us who struggle technologically! Hahahaha🤣
Ya know since I have written this Iooked into it and have schooled myself on interfacing. I found one that looks pretty good too, so if anyone else is reading this, check into the “Presonus 24C” interface. It reviews well and you can also find UA-cam videos in it. I can even link it on my iPad with a C TO C cord and transfer directly to garage band. I know what I am asking for for Christmas! 😁

Using earbuds, I thought the pickup mics were the best with the condenser right behind. I found your video looking for ideas on how to record my harp, but in a hall-like "live" kind of sound because I tend to like the amplified sound thru a PA better. Lol. your video made me remember that I have several mics at my disposal and that I should use them! Thanks!

Margi Miller I know! That was a surprise for me as well. The Yeti was about 1 foot to the left of the harp, pointed toward the mid-bass range and in cardioid mode.

I just got my blue yeti x in the mail and I've been playing around with it for several hours. It sounds pretty good except for a bit of a fuzzy static sound. I'm curious how you got yours so crisp sounding?
Thank you for this. I’m amazed at the quality from the iPhone 11- I thought the Shure was only marginally better. That really surprised me and on this demonstration don’t think the benefit from the Shure to be worth paying for (and I am a Shure fan). However, I guess another placement of the Shure might make a difference and it does offer a lot of additional functionality. The Rode was very disappointing, but I note other comments on placement. The blue Yeti was the best of these four by some distance. The takeaway for me is that for general communication, even tutorial purposes, the iPhone 11 internal appears to be quite adequate; but for recording purposes I would look to use a quality external mic and the Yeti might well suffice.

I listened to all 6 options on 2 different devices - my TV with Sony sound bar, then my iPad Pro. It was very interesting to hear how they handled the recording options rather differently. I am quite impressed with the quality of the iPhone 11 (much better than my 6S), as well as the Blue Yeti Nano and K&K Big Twin pickup. Did you use a particular recording app on your iPhone?
Thanks for having a careful listen! It's fun taking some time to hear the different options and there are so many variables! Yes, the iPhone 11 was a nice surprise (no special app, just the built in mic as I recorded video). Interesting...the Blue Yeti Nano has been a popular choice!
I thought the K & K sounded the best closely followed by the Yeti Nano, then the Audio Technica, then the iphone microphone, then the Shure and then the Rode. That said they could all sound different for voice or with another recording setup, like in the more recent video where you connect the Yeti to your iphone for some reason it just sounded better to me, though it did sound a little oversensitive but i'm sure thats just the gain that needs dropping a little. And the Shure definitely has a hiss which maybe could be reduced by adjusting the settings. And I think the iphone was the real winner here as it sounded way better than I expected it to.

Glad it was helpful!, Barbara! I guess I was just surprised because the Blue Yeti Nano is such an easy and affordable option. It's not my personal choice for the harp, but I can see how people tend to be drawn to it's full sound. I find it to be a great mic for improving Zoom audio, which was why I originally purchased it.

Hi Tiffany...thanks! Both the pickup and the Audio-technica plug into a Sound Devices USBPre. Then I mix those two tracks in Garageband. What are you using for audio these days?

1, 4 & 6 had the most depth in sound! No. 2 was the most shallow sounding.

Wonderful comparisons, some of the best I've seen. Question for you: it sounds like, from your comments, that you wouldn't use these for a professional recording (if even you'd do that at home). If you would (or do), what mics would you use? Do you have experience with that?
Wow, I missed this comment... sorry Timothy. When I'm trying to do the best I can with my harp audio it's a mix of the harp's pickup (K&K Big Twin) and an audio technica microphone. I'm experimenting now with a new interface, Universal Audio Arrow. The Yeti and Shure have been most useful for doing quick tutorials.

Hard choice! Maybe Blue Yeti Nano or Audio-Technica? Wondering if I am being swayed by the feel of the individual portions of music though. I first listened to your video on my I phone 7 plus and then on speakers on a desktop computer. Huge difference there!

There are so many variables aren't there! The Blue Yeti Nano does a great job for ease of use and affordability and the result was very similar to the Audio-technica. Are you going to use your iPhone to start recording?

The Shure MV88 really levels up the iPhone/iPad recording quality. And it is so easy to use! That being said, the iPhone does a very good job all on its own. I need to check and see if I can connect the Yeti to the iPhone with an adapter (if I can find it!)
Blue Yeti nano seemed a fuller sound to me
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic This "may" be what you are looking for. I use a similar one for my Android and USB Audio Technica. *The USB mic will run the phone's battery down faster than normal.

Loved the surprisingly warm sound of the Blue Yeti Nano. Is it because you put it through GarageBand? I wonder what it would sound like when recording a "movie" on QuickTime? I have a harp-like instrument called a monochord, and have been trying to record on my MacBook Air (through computer microphone), but the sound quality needs a lot to be desired.
I didn't add any processing to the audio in Garageband (I could have and that would have improved things further). The Blue Yeti Nano will definitely be an improvement over the computer's built-in mic. Good luck!
The Blue Yeti Nano had a distinct sound difference in terms of full body and depth.
Stephen Bianco Yes, it did surprisingly well didn’t it? I need to try it connected to my iPhone and see how it does with voice (talking) and harp. In this video my voice was recorded with the Shure and I’m not quite happy with how it turned out.

Nano is my best
K&K, MV88 make the most natural, balance sound. Audio Technica mic gives rather good sound but its old . Yeti nano gives extraordinary sound body and I do not prefer the Roede mic :)

Which audio interface did you use for the audio technica mic?

Great question! In this video I was using an old Sound Devices interface. I have since switched to the universal Audio Arrow.
Thank you, so useful. I just use a H2 Zoom. I do seem to get a slight background hiss. Can you maybe do a video of a simple and not too expensive amplification system (say, for outdoor playing). I really need someone to tell me exact brands to go out and buy because I really don't want to do a whole lot of research.
Ooo that's a big topic! Maybe my husband will be interested in taking that one on, he's more of a gigging musician than I am. That being said, I do have a setup that I'm happy with!

On the subject of your hubbie, I would also love a video on arranging for guitar and harp as I know lots of guitarists who play with various different techniques (none of them classical). What works, and what doesn't etc. Would love your thoughts. I don't often see this combination of instruments.
@@sthom4bad What seems to work for us is he plays in a rhythmic style and I play in a melodic style, so we aren't both trying to do the same thing. We mostly play from lead sheets.

Thank you so much for doing this! I haven't listened with headphones yet but I will tonight. My question is this: I have several microphones (mostly Shure vocal mics) but I have no idea how to use Garage band or interface them with anything. Let's say I found the right microphone for me, but then what do I do? (BTW, Santa brought me an iPhone 11pro so maybe that's all I need? With a microphone for better audio and/or to interface with garage band? I'm pretty confused LOL!) Should I learn how to use garage band? I don't plan on every doing UA-cam vids or going pro, but it would be nice to record some of my harp playing as well as some other instruments. As of today, I just do audio with my old Zoom recorder than upload it to my computer.
Hi Jill, I just upgraded my phone to the iPhone11 as well and I am really pleased with the video/audio quality improvements over my old one. Actually I shot this video on the iphone (in selfie mode). I just picked up the adapter that allows me to connect the Blue Yeti Nano directly to the iPhone lightning port and I'm really pleased with how it sounds. The nice thing about that is you can bring the mic closer to the harp. My goal is easy workflow/affordability/quality sound. I do use Garageband for mixing when I make recordings of my music, but for a tutorial style (talking and playing) I think this will be my new setup!

Hi Anne, thank you so much for this video of comparing various microphones. This might be outside of your expertise, but as a non Apple user(gasp, choke...), do you have recommendations for how to use the microphones 3-6 with a PC? And since Garageband is only for Apple, is there a good Garageband alternative. My sister has been after me for many years to record my harping and your video is such a good incentive to get me started. Many thanks for this and for your music!!
Now that's a good question for Google (or maybe someone will pipe in here). I know the Blue Yeti with USB would certainly be an easy option with a PC. I'm not sure about the software/apps for recording on PC, but a quick Google search will send you on your way I'm sure.
Your beautiful playing really deserves better microphones than these.
These days I'm using a Warm WA84 along with my K&K Big Twin pickup.

Living in a noisy tropical country, I thought it would be best to buy the K&k Big Twin. However, it seems I cannot record by simply plugging it in the computer. Do I need a mixer or pre-amp?
Unfortunately, it's not quite as simple as just plugging the pickup directly into the computer. You'll need an audio interface to act as the bridge.

I've used different ones. I had been using an older Sound Devices interface and recently switched to Universal Audio Arrow.

I would like to hear the Rode recorded through your computer instead of the camera. It didn't do it justice.
Actually I just recorded a new harp tutorial using the Rode via EVO4 into Garageband for my voice plus the installed pickup on the harp. That should be ready this week.

I just had a chance to sit down with Bose headphones and listen. In no particular order of preference: iPhone, Shure MV88, Blue Yeti, and K & K. One reason the Blue Yeti sounds so fantastic is that it 'follows' the Rode which was thin and mono-ish sounding. The K & K still has a hint of that 'pickup' sound to it. If I really had to choose I'd say the iPhone or the Shure, but I like the Yeti also. I agree re: having a mic like the Yeti attached to the iPhone - it's nice to have the mic where you want it, while you can video with the iPhone further away. Thanks for doing this!
Yes, the K&K does have a pickup-ish sound, so I usually filter out some of the low mids and mix it with another mic. You'll hear it in the "Land of Dreams" video next week. Now that I have the adapter for the Blue Yeti Nano attached to the iPhone it's winning more "easy to use" points!
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic where did you get the adapter for the Blue Yeti Nano? I looked online but it wasn't obvious. Then you just record - into an app? - on the phone? Or does it go to iTunes library, or maybe Voice Memo?
