- Actress Ruth Madoc, who starred in the BBC sitcom Hi-de-Hi! (1980 - 1988), has died aged 79, her agent says. Her agent said she died in hospital on Friday afternoon after surgery for a fall she had earlier in the week. Hi-de-Hi! Was her most famous role, but she had many in television, theatre and films. She died yesterday and her birthday was last April.
I liked her portrayal in the film "The Prince and the Pauper" (1977), though only a small part, I liked her performance in this and its my favourite version of this film (and there have been many including animated ones). That film had a big cast of many fine actors of the day, but her role in Hi-de-Hi! She kept her Welsh accent in character, though she was born in Norwich, England, she spent much of her time with her Welsh grandmother and English grandfather, and with her distinctive look, voice and acting, this made this her most recognised role of all. She was always a pleasure to watch in interviews as well, I found.

Brilliant, loved her. Met her behind 18th green golf course Tenerife 1990 with Les Dawson. Absolutely lovely.
As a non-Brit, my memory of Ms. Madoc is of her as Fruma Sarah flying about the cemetery in the incredible dream sequence in Fiddler on the Roof. Condolences to her loved ones.
